Replacing the display will take patience and time as you will have to heat up the display to detach it from the adhesive sticking it to its housing. You will also have to unplug the entire antenna, take out the battery, and motherboard before being able to get to the display.

    • Remove the thirteen black screws and the single silver screw from the back of the phone with a JIS size 00 screwdriver.

    • The black screws are 2.8 mm in length.

    • The silver screw is 5.5 mm in length.

    • The black screw next to the camera and the flash is covered by a sticker. This screw can be easily removed as if there were no sticker on top of it. The point of the screwdriver should be able to pierce through the sticker easily.

The screw next to the camera with the sticker on (top middle on screen) was T4 not J00

    • Use a plastic opening tool to remove the inner phone backing.

    • The parts of the inner backing held down by two strips of double sided tape can be easily loosened by inserting the plastic opening tool underneath it and gently lifting it up.

    • Note the position of the speaker unit so you can replace it in the correct place during reassembly.

    • Take the speaker out of the back of the phone. It should come out easily as soon as the inner back is removed because nothing is holding it down in place anymore.

    • Use a plastic opening tool to gently pry up both ends of the antenna.

    • Carefully remove the antenna wire from the plastic keepers along the side. Note their position for reassembly.

    • The antenna connections can be easily bent out of shape. Be sure to lift from underneath the cable as shown.

It is very important to lift it form underneath... The connector on the motherboard is very fragile.

Is there any way to actually replace the port? It got ripped off mine.

    Matthew George -

I am wondering how to repair it, it got ripped off as well.

    Hello Guile,

I ripped the connector of gsm antenna on the other side (mainboard side) is there any way to fix it? It May be connect another contact point?

    • Using a plastic opening tool, gently pry the vibration motor from its mount.

This image is too dark and there is no marker to identify the vibration motor.

    • Gently remove the circuit board from the phone by gently pulling it away from the bottom of the phone.

There´s some adhesive tape holding the ribbon cable on to the flat connector, it needs to be carefully raised before this board can be removed.

Suggest rotating the phone in your hand to better access the ribbon cables?

    • Carefully remove the battery pack from the phone using your hand. The battery is glued in placed by a strip of adhesive on the top side so some force may be necessary.

    • There are fragile tabs on the left and right side of the battery, be careful not to break them off.

The battery is glued in placed by a strip of adhesive on the top side so some force may be necessary. In my case the strip of adhesive is on the long right side of the battery.

    • Using a plastic opening tool, disconnect the display cable from the side of the motherboard by carefully sticking the tool underneath the display cable and gently pulling outward.

The cable should not be pulled that way… you could damage it (I learned it the hard way). Pull up the metal shielding first then un-hatch the locking mechanism inside…

Yes. I destroyed a motherboard like this. I guess that is what I get for listening to only one instruction.

    • There are four black plastic retainers, two on each side, that keep the motherboard fix in place. To get the motherboard out, stick a plastic opening tool under one top corner of the motherboard and carefully lift upward using a small amount of force to pop this side of the motherboard out of the plastic retainers.

    • Be careful not to break the black plastic retainers as these are needed to put the motherboard back in place.

In the model Z00D there are only two clips.

    • Once one side of the motherboard is out of the black plastic retainers, remove the whole motherboard from the phone.

    • The motherboard should come out easily once one side of it is freed from the black plastic retainers.

    • Using a hair dryer or a heat gun, heat up the adhesive that attaches the display to the housing. The adhesive lies around the edges of the display.

    • Using a heat gun will allow you to melt the adhesive in about 30 seconds; whereas a hair dryer will take about 3-5 minutes to melt the adhesive.

Please, could you tell me the exact heat gun's temperature? Thanks!

    • Using the plastic opening tool, pry off the display by inserting the tool in between the display and the housing at the edges of the phone.

    • Once the screen comes away from the backing, gently slide the opening tool around the edges while prying the rest of the screen away.

    • Be careful not to bend the screen too much, or it might break.

    • Once the screen has been separated from the backing, remove the display cable out of the hole in the top of the phone body.

    • You don't need to be careful removing this cable because it will be replaced by a new cable along with the new display. If you want to save it, rotate the display as you separate the display from the backing.

    • Using a plastic opening tool, remove the speaker grill from the display.

    • Place it in its designated spot on the body of the phone.

    • We recommend attaching the speaker grill to the actual body of the phone rather than the display.

    • Carefully feed the antenna cables of the new display through the appropriate holes in the housing.

    • Reattach the phone display with adhesive. You can either use the old adhesive (if it is in good enough condition), or newly purchased adhesive (2 mm thick, double sided).

You forgot to mention that there is very strong adhesive under the battery!!!!!!!! I ripped through the freaking battery casing because of that!!!!

Dylan Tucker -

Thank you !!!

Hi i would like to know where do you find the phone parts from, trying to find lcd and housing to fix.

yiling110 -

I used this guide to replace the Zenfone 2 model Z00D display.

The procedure is similar but something change (connectors position for example).

But if you have a Z00D you can follow this guide anyway.

Thank you

Alessandro -

What is the adhesive that has to be used?

Esteban Zanolli -

Followed instructing and even watched a few videos before trying, everything looked great but both the touch and charging port did not work after i replaced the screen. Any ideas? did this happen to anyone else?

Liz Beth -

This one worked for my Zenfone5 pretty well. Simple intuitive variations. Happy now. Gracias!

Camilo Jara Bravo -

I confirm what Dylan Tucker said, that it is very difficult to remove the battery since it is glued with a strong adhesive. Otherwise the tutorial is very clear.

Maximilien Babadjian -

I also could not get the digitizer to respond after replacing. On an unrelated note…if I used contact cement to reassemble the phone, does anyone know if hard that would be to reopen? heh heh.

Onca -

Hi there!

I chaged the display just like told in this tutorial. Only difference is that I used a complete assembled display and didn't have to go through that glue problem. But I now have the problem that the display shines, but no picture is appearing. I checked all contacts twice but none helped. What went wrong? Is there a way to still getting it fixed?

Tombstone -

Can you guys fix this phone for me?
