Follow these steps to remove the muffler from your Briggs and Stratton 675 engine. Once removed, a damaged muffler can be replaced or a dirty one cleaned. The muffler can become dirty or damaged over time. It is important to keep it clear of debris so that the exhaust coming from the engine can flow normally.

    • Make sure the engine is off and the spark plug wire is removed and away from the spark plug before beginning.

    • Use a socket wrench with a 1/4" hex bit or a 1/4" wrench to remove the three 13mm screws holding the outer flange.

    • Remove the flange.

    • Use a pair of needle nose pliers to bend back the two metal tabs on either side of the remaining screws.

    • Be careful not to break off the tabs.

    • Remove the muffler from the engine block by simply pulling it away.

    • After removing the muffler, make sure to note the configuration of the washer assembly that sits between the muffler and the engine block (shown in photo 2). This piece will be free to fall out once the muffler is removed. Do not lose this piece.

My 675 engine is ~12 years old and it has a vertical metal piece attached to the muffler going up ~3 inches. I can’t see what it attaches to. I can feel a thin metal bar under the cowling but I don’t know what it does. Help!
