    • Take the nozzle cap off to allow the tire to deflate.

    • Place the tire pump on the nozzle and press down on the nozzle.

    • You should hear a wheezing sound indicating the air is being released.

    • Squeeze the tire to check if all the air has been removed.

    • Place the bike upside down so it’s resting on the handlebars.

A lot of folks have stuff on their handlebars, like bells, horns, lights, and computers. When changing a flat out and about, be cognizant of where you’re putting your bike. Best to put it on grass as opposed to pavement.

  3. Using a torque wrench with the 15mm socket, loosen the two bolts on the axle that keep the tire in place.

    • After removing both bolts, remove both washers that protect the frame of the bike.

  5. Pull the tire in an upward motion, releasing it from the brakes and axle.

  6. Insert a prying tool in between the tire and metal rim and push it outward, dislodging it from the rim and making it easier to remove.

The arguments about pry tools are legend. Bike shop mechanics have the hand strength to remove and replace tires without tools. I can’t. I favor plastic pry tools because if something is gonna break, I’d rather it be the pry tool. Carry extras when riding.

    • Remove the outer tire off the rim.

    • When you remove the outer tire, the inner tube is also removed.

    • Remove the inner tube from inside of the tire.

    • Clean the inner section of the outer tire with a cloth, removing any debris.

If out and about, a cloth might not be available. Also, I’ve pulled glass and other things out of my tires so a cloth might end up getting one’s finger sliced. I recommend one use a pry tool to check for debris in the tire, which one needs to remove.

    • Place the outer section of the tire back onto the metal rim.

    • Make sure to push the nozzle of the inner tube through the designated hole in the metal rim.

    • Begin to pull the tire onto the rim.

If they are directional tires, be sure that they are going in the right direction.

    • Place the washers on both sides of the wheel.

    • Using the torque wrench and 15mm socket, tighten the bolts to the axle, making sure the tire is securely in place.

    • Using the bike pump, fill the tire with air.
