    • Remove the first flap using a flathead screwdriver or small coin to turn the mechanism to the unlocked position.

    • Use a T10 Torx screwdriver to remove all visible screws. Remove the secondary plate and any further screws. Note the location of the one long screw, the rest are interchangeable at this stage.

    • Turn the brush bar over and carefully remove the top cover.

    • There is a single plastic clip holding it in place.

    • You may wish to use a flathead screwdriver or spudger. If the plastic clip breaks, this should not be a huge issue, as the rest of the cover is held in with screws.

    • You now have access to the motor assembly. This can be removed from the body of the brush bar with some gentle twisting and tugging.

    • You do not need to remove the belt drive assembly to remove any hair caught in the ball bearing

    • Once removed, you can use a 9mm socket to rotate a spiral mechanism and loosen the belt drive.

the belt tightening cam (spiral) has a ratchet underneath. loosen the screw, or take it off altogether

    • If you need to remove the belt drive system, start by using a small thin tool such as a metal skewer to lift it off the small pulley.

    • Use the flat spot on the large pulley to lift the belt out of the pulley. use the same mechanism to reverse.

    • Use a T8 Torx screwdriver to remove the screw holding the spiral drive mechanism in place. This is the drive mechanism that spins the brush bar.

    • Use a thin flat device such as a spudger, screwdriver, or metal prying tool to lift the spiral drive piece off its axle.

    • You can now see one side of the ball bearing. This is where hair gets trapped if the brush bar is not cleaned regularly enough.

    • You can remove the hair and regrease the ball bearing from here.

I used small mole grips to pull off the spiral device. It was a tight fit.

Once off there was a lot of hair wound around and lots of dust in the bearing. WD40 and lots of working freed the bearing.

When re-assembling do not over-tighten the belt with the cam. Just enough to ensure the belt is straight between pullets with a little tension. Tighten the cam securing screw.

My spiral drive mechanism appears to have broken - there is a plastic piece that is actually inside of the spiral drive mechanism that the screw goes through. This entire spiral drive mechanism was severed from the spin brush holder - I took apart the screw and spiral drive mechanism and now have a severed plastic piece that I can't determine a part name / part number for... Any guidance would be appreciated! Thank you

If you can't find a replacement for the individual piece, you can try finding a whole new brush head, I'm afraid.

    A) finding a replacement Dyson part on marketplace/ebay

    B) buying a new replacement from an espares website.

I have cleaned out hair from behind the spiral drive a few times and somehow the screw has come out and been lost. Do you know what size the screw is that holds the spiral drive mechanism in place??

    Chelsie Lindsay -

I haven't taken it apart again, but I think you could definitely try using one of the other screws in place of the spiral drive screw. Certainly don't need all of the screws on the outside of the case.
