This guide will walk you through the process of accessing, removing and replacing the Cooling Fan for a Compaq Presario V5303NR. The process of accessing the fan will need to be done if the user is thoroughly cleaning the cooling fan. Replacement, meanwhile, needs to be done if the fan is damaged or otherwise rendered inoperable.

The fan in the V5303NR is much less accessable than the fans in most modern laptops, making this process relatively difficult to do and with a slight risk of further damaging the components if improperly done.

    • Turn the laptop bottom-side up.

    • Push the battery latch to the left position to unlock the battery.

    • Remove the battery from its socket.

    • Failure to unplug the computer and remove the battery can result in electrical discharges on contact with the computer's components. This can damage the computer or even hurt the user.

    • Use the Phillips #0 screwdriver to remove the 3 5mm #0 screws highlighted in the picture.

    • Use the Phillips #0 screwdriver to remove the 2 4mm #0 screws highlighted in the picture.

    • Use the Phippips #0 screwdriver to remove the 10 5mm #0 screws highlighted in the picture.

    • Keep the different types of screws separate from one another. They will only fit into holes created for screws of their size, and thus cannot fit into other screw holes.

    • Use the metal spudger to pry open the two metal latches affixing the fan cover to the laptop.

    • Use the Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the 4mm #00 screw affixing the fan cover to the laptop.

    • A plastic spudger has a decreased risk of damaging the computer and its components, so it would normally be preferred over the metal. However, due to the limited amount of space between the latch and the fan's casing, the plastic one may not fit, as was the case in the photo above.

    • Carefully unplug the plastic piece at the end of the wire from the motherboard at the highlighted point.

    • Carefully remove said plastic piece from the end of the wire bundle at the end of the wire.

    • Do not lose this plastic piece, as it plugs the fan into the fan's power supply.

    • Be very careful to avoid damaging any of the components listed above. If any of these parts are damaged, the fan, if not the computer as a whole, could be irreparably damaged.

    • Use the Phillips #00 screwdriver on the three 4mm #00 screws affixing the fan to the laptop.

    • Carefully unweave the fan's wire from the two highlighted overhangs holding it in place.

    • The first image shows the white plastic piece still attached to the wire. This was an oversight on the photographers. If you have followed the guide to this point, this piece should already have been removed.

    • Feed the wire and wire bundle through the hole in the fan case.
