This guide will show you how to fix a noisy or squeaky bicycle chain. Bicycle chains tend to make squeaking noises due to a buildup of rust. To prevent your bicycle chain from rusting, store your bicycle indoors where it will not be exposed to frequent sun or rain.

Only use WD-40 that is made specifically for bicycles; regular WD-40 can damage your bicycle chain.

    • Place a piece of cardboard under the bicycle to catch excess cleaner.

    • Rotate the foot pedal with your hand slowly, and spray WD-40 bicycle chain cleaner evenly throughout the chain.

    • Only use WD-40 that is specifically made for bicycles. Using normal WD-40 can damage your bicycle chain.

    • The chemical spray is toxic and very unpleasant to smell. Please use a mask or other means of protection on your face and eyes.

    • Use bicycle cleaning tools to clean the bicycle chain, the chainrings, the cogset, and front & rear derailleurs until most of the rust is gone.

    • Some bicycles do not have all of these parts.

    • Check your chain system, not only on the chain, but also on the chainrings, cogset, and derailleur system. Sometimes this part will also make noises because of rust.

    • Drip the WD-40 bicycle lubricant on one spot of the chain and rotate the foot pedal until the whole chain is lubricated.

    • Only use WD-40 that is specifically made for bicycles. Using normal WD-40 can damage your bicycle chain.

    • Repeat this process until the chain no longer squeaks.
