Mine is not working anymore and I suspect that the battery is not charging. I´ve checked the battery and its code is AEC653055-2Pwith rating 3,7V 2000 mAh. It has 3 cables: red, yellow and black. I´ve used a voltage meetering to check if there some charge coming from and it had 4,0 VDC. So, probably the problem related to my device is with the battery, because it´s not charging. Anyone else had this same issue?

Marcio Michel -

hey. i had the same problem with the battery of JBL flip. and i fixed it. Complete video tutorial is here :)

Like the illustration and it seems easy. But I do not have the JBL battery. where can I get the replacement battery?

Marcio Michel noted, "I´ve checked the battery and its code is AEC653055-2Pwith rating 3,7V 2000 mAh. It has 3 cables: red, yellow and black"

Interesting observation: I too have taken my JBL Flip apart to replace a battery that no longer holds a charge beyond 20 minutes. My battery is labeled AEC653055-2S with a rating of 7.4V 1000mAH The battery pack's back is stamped 3342 and 7.4Wh It has a three prong molex connecter with blue, red and black wires. I tested my battery and it yields a voltage of ~8.2 volts.

From a physical battery standpoint, it appears the same. The battery Marcio specified is wired in parallel while mine is in series (-2P vs. -2S) and the specifications match: two 3.7v 1000mAh li-ion cells wired in parallel yield 3.7v @ 2000mAh whereas wired in series it will yield 7.4v @ 1000mAh. I am assuming then that the JBL Flip's circuitry accommodates both voltages. I also noted the OEM charging cable/transformer JBL supplies with it has an output rated at 12.0V @ 1500mA.

George -

Never the less, my search for a replacement battery continues. I have found identically labeled batteries with just two wire connectors, but not one with three (I am assuming the third cable is a thermistor to balance the charge between the two cells?)

Has anyone else found a suitable battery, or better yet, an upgraded one to last longer? The original battery's dimensions are 65*30*15mm

George -

I can not find this battery anywhere. Any links? Or guidance please. Thank you.

Did you manage to find the batteries? I might be able to help. Got the JBL Flip to power back up after replacing With a 7.4v 1200mAH battery, they're not the exact ones for the JBL but should work just fine, if not better. Unfortunately not easily found. I have around 5 left so If interested just let me know on 07961576800.

In my case it turned out their was a problem with the board. Battery replacement provided power to switch on but still refused to work. On that note the battery issues could have been caused by faulty board or other way round. Hard to know for sure... some food for thought.

Obviously their's no saying how they will perform in the long run, however rest assured you will get power again if the battery is your issue.

Hope that helps

rolffz -

Hey Gizmo, would it be possible to buy one of the those JBL replacement batteries of you if they are still available?

itzrami -

I have obtained a larger Li-po battery designed for those little remote control helicopters. It's a 7.4v 1500mAh battery. It is only slightly wider and thicker than the original but it is considerably longer. I am weighing taking my dremel to the JBL housing to make the new battery fit. It would entail filing out the side battery holder "wings" (no problem). But more substantial- removing the center screw post, permanently reducing it to just 2 of 3 screws keeping it together. The molex connector and wiring was also different than OEM so I deconstructed the old battery and installed the OEM top board onto the new battery (takes a bit of skill with a soldering iron but no biggie since the OEM battery is already useless).

So I am at a bit of a decision point- commit to the housing change or continue looking for the appropriate battery and leave as is. Good thing this device was replaced with a Flip 3 and thus relegated to non-working status. Else I'm not sure I would even contemplate the modification.

George -

Hi anybody, same problem with flip one battery, no more charging after two years using it ; disassembling using this nice page Thx a lot ; but battery is no longer available (i have been contacting JBL) ; i think it's possible to use another one, or to make one using battery cells (caution about fire/explosion with lipo) ; my old battery has two cells, one is 4,6 v the other one is 0,6v , and i have no voltage going out the battery management system : i think battery had a problem, and BMS is in protection mode because cells are no more balanced ; can someone confirm that his battery has equal charged cells (and perhaps less than 4,6v, i think it's too high) ; and can someone mesure voltage going out of the board for charging battery ? (at the 3 pin little molex for connecting battery) thanks a lot for helping

DrGomi -

Excellent guide. Followed step by step and it worked great.

How many of you are having trouble finding the right battery for JBL FLIP??

I have a solution for that.

danish -

I'm guessing most of us are!

Patrick Pearce -

Hello,

after an exhausting search and emailing JBL and reading all the posts conclusion is, there is no battery to buy. So I ordered a LiPo battery with same Voltage, (2 cells 3.7V ea) and same AH (2000mah combined). Its for those RC helicopters. Then as George posted above, I dissected the old battery, took the little board between the cells out, dissected the new battery and soldered the board between those new cells. (When I say dissect, of course, not the cells themselves.) The batteries are found on ebay for under $10.00

It takes some experience and talent with soldering small electronics. Not for beginners. And of course, use that experience and talent to safeguard from shortening any batteries out after removing shrink or plastic wrap. Makes sure to re-wrap with appropriate sticky tape. I used clear packaging tape. So far works great.

gschiller -

Could you post a link to the battery you used? I found this website, but I wouldn't know where to start, though it's got so many batteries on offer, I'd be surprised if it didn't have something suitable.

Patrick Pearce -

what is that sticky black substance??

Gireesh Hegde -

Dr Gomi's battery part works/fits...it was incredibly fiddly. It was only after putting it back together that I realised there was an easier way to do it. DO NOT do what I did! The new battery came with a different terminal connecter, so I removed it and replaced it with the one from the original battery. The pins you need to refit to the ends of the new batteries wires are tiny, so I kept getting crossed stray wires when relocating them into the terminal block. The easy solution, which I didn't do...just cut the wires on the old and new batteries one by one, splice the wires together and tape them up. It'll then take you 5 minutes to attach the old connector terminal to the new battery...instead of 2 hours. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. FYI - the sticky substance retains its stickiness after you remove the battery. It tends to stay in one piece and is highly malleable, so it's easy to squeeze the new battery into it securely. Think of it as super sticky blue-tack.

Patrick Pearce -

you wouldn't by chance know where to purchase the replacement battery. And by the way you did a excellent detailed review in how to disassemble this JBL Flip 2 wireless speaker.

throwaline -

warning do not purchase JBL wireless speakers, because they do not allow you to purchase the replacement rechargeable battery once the warranty has expired.

This worked as replacement. Perfect fit. Available on Amazon:

FLOUREON 7.4V 1000mAh Lipo Battery Pack 2S 20C RC Battery with JST Plug (Grade A cells) for RC

Cut the two wire plug off of this and as Patrick above says splice the old battery plug onto the new battery wires. Sweet! Wrote a success story which is somewhere on this site which has more detail.

Hi Folks... thanks for a great guide. I undertook the fix using a battery found on ebay, here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/400997007344?_tr...

Works well, plays on battery, but when I attempt to charge it, I get a flashing red light (instead of static red light) and I don't thing it's charging successfully. I suspect this might be because there is no battery management chip on the battery I bought. Do you think this is the reason, or are there other obvious reasons why it may not be working? Otherwise, I may undertake the soldering exercise detailed above and transfer the old battery management chip onto the new battery.

All help appreciated!

Stephen

stephenjkelly -

OK - I transplanted the battery management chip from the old battery to the new one, and hey Presto! It works!

stephenjkelly -

How did you transfer the battery management chip? Is there a guide on doing this? Can you tell me please?

Sergio -

can you plase give an instruction on (disassembly) changing the battery on the 40bt JBL bluetooth headphones thank you in advance E-mail josephwensie@hotmail.com

wensie joseph -

JBL seems to want folks to simply dispose of this speaker when the battery wears out. That is insanely wasteful...almost like throwing away a car when the tires are worn. As a non techie, there's no way I would attempt this replacement...so, unless someone sets up shop to perform this as a paid service for, say thirty bucks....all of these JBL flips will end up in a landfill causing more pollution. Maybe someone in China can make a business of buying up old Flips and refurbishing them?

There really should be international laws against manufacturing these kinds of products in ways that don't allow for simple battery replacement...it's evil on many levels to design these as disposable items when they could last for many many years if handled well.

EcoLogical -

Agreed.

After feeling proud of myself for finally replacing the battery in mine ( battery cost about $9) and maybe an hour's worth of actual repair time (I also spent dozens of hours searching for the right battery and even bought two that did not fit), I happened to find brand new JBL flips on sale at Sam's Club for $50 each!

So even if I wanted to fix yours for you, factor in cost of shipping both ways, cost of battery and my time, I'm not much better off making money delivering pizzas!

George -

Wat is the battery part number or model number

cjwarren42civics -

This is the one I finally ended up using.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2S-7-4V-1000mAh-...

You will need to remove the cables and board from this new battery and transplant the battery management board from your old battery onto the new battery pack. It's a fairly simple process if you have a modicum of soldering skills. Just be sure not to heat the new battery pack too much and as well, be careful not to damage the old management board and cables when removing it from the old battery.

Does anyone know of a speaker with replaceable batteries? I’m not buying anything without user replaceable batteries anymore. See ya Apple, ba bye JBL

ahzoom -

I think my JBL flip just won’t charge because of the connection…does that seem possible or is it always the battery?

nateandlasmom -

If the device is over a year or so old, it’s probably the battery. One way to check to be sure is to disassemble the device as shown above and with the battery disconnected, plug in the charger and use a voltmeter to see if you get any current at the charging port. If you do, the battery is bad. If you don’t, then the charger or connection is the problem. To rule out the charger, unplug it from the device and use the voltmeter to test the charger’s output at the tip of its plug. If nothing, then you do have a bad charging port.

George -

Sorry, meant to say at the end, if you measure nothing out of the tip of the charging cable, then the charger is bad. If you get voltage then there is a problem with the charging circuit on the device. At that point, unless you have another flip that is broken or have access to salvage parts, then you’re better off just pitching it and getting a new one.

That’s the problem with these Flips. They are priced right on the edge of being disposable when they break.

George -

I am attempting to change the battery from my JBL Flip (Flip 1).  I bought an authentic replacement battery for JBL Flip (CPP-582).  The size of the battery is right but the connecting cables white male plastic is too big to enter in the female white plastic connector which is already part of the mother board.  Who knew that JBL changed the size of the connecting plug!  I already spent good money on this expensive battery.  Any suggestion?

Jacques — July 12, 2018

Jacques Gagne -

Carefully disassemble the old battery so that you can remove the charging circuit board with original connector. To do this, you just need to carefully slice open the outer heat-shrinked, package tape looking outer cover to expose the circuit board at the end. Do NOT slice open or into the silver foil of the individual battery cells.

Then do the same with the new battery, taking extra caution not to short circuit the new battery pack and noting the correct polarity of the silver metal tabs connecting the battery to the board. Then solder the old charging circuit board onto the new battery at the proper tabs. Reassemble using as much of the old “packing tape” and perhaps wrap once with new tape.

George -

I’m going to be blunt here. Soldering the old charging board onto the new battery is a tricky process not only because it’s easy to accidentally short out the battery, but also because the heat of your iron can easily damage the new battery cells . If you are unfamiliar with how to properly do this, look up on youtube how to assemble rc car batteries for tips on how to solder batteries minimizing heat damage.

Good luck!

George -
