    • Insert a large plastic opening tool next to the Kindle's headphone jack.

    • Make sure the notch on the plastic opening tool is facing the back of the Kindle.

    • Move the plastic opening tool evenly around the Kindle, separating the two halves.

    • Be careful not to completely separate the rear cover. There are two delicate flex cables that connect the display assembly to the motherboard.

Getting the SIM card dummy plug out a real challenge. Broke off one end. Seems this part was never intended to be removed.

    • Set the Kindle down on the rear case.

    • Holding the display assembly near the camera, carefully open the display assembly up to about 90 degrees from the rear case.

    • These images show the Kindle laying flat. In order to prevent damage to the flex cables, keep the Kindle open at 90 degrees while disconnecting the display assembly.

    • Lift the retaining flap on the ZIF connector of the upper flex cable.

    • Gently pull the cable out of its socket.

    • This flex cable is delicate. Be careful not to crease or bend it while working.

This is very delicate. The flap is very easy to break off. Remove the yellow tape on both these connectors and replace with ordinary plastic tape upon reassembly. If you don't tape them you'll pull them apart working on the other. A helper to hold the assy is a good idea.

    • Remove the following sixteen screws from the metal midframe on the rear of the device:

    • Four 3 mm Phillips screw (located in each corner of the device - noted in red in the diagram)

    • Four 3 mm Phillips screws (surrounding the ports - noted in orange in the diagram)

    • Eight 3 mm Phillips screws (located around the body of the midframe - noted in yellow in the diagram)

The screws are next to the ports, not the camera.

    • Locate the charger and micro HDMI input located on the back side of your Kindle.

    • Use your finger to gently apply pressure and push upward on the metal strip that faces the center of the Kindle.

    • Be careful to not bend the black portion that connects the two inputs when removing the metal strip.

    • Lift the metal strip on both sides by using your fingers.

Where can I purchase the Charger and Micro HDMI input replacement part for my Kindle Fire HD 8.9 tablet?

greggbaxter -

If you search Google for "Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9" Dock Assembly" a few will show up.

ebay is going to have the most options for any phone tablet etc parts. Look for your model number (general tip) do not just look for as a example samsung s3 mini glass there are variants based on carrier. So make sure your buying a kindle fire 8.9 and not a hdx part. I think in the 8.9 hds there are 2 variants i know there are 2 storage configs. So make sure you get the right part.

First link on ebay search kindle fire hd 8.9 hdmi port (has both ports) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kindle-fire-HD-8... 25 bucks (note i have not used this seller previously and do not in any way support him/her or say to not buy from him/her This is only a example link showing average cost) This likely is not the best deal it is 28 ship with the 3 shipping tacked on.

I'm all finished, I had a real problem figuring out the lock key. Now that I am all finished though the touchscreen is unresponsive. What the heck could I have done? I found this quite simple. And what the heck can I do to fix it? Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

Same issue here...

mikebrownson -

what do you mean by lock key? like the password to open the kindle? Or an internal component?

Gaming Gamer -

Step to remove lock key should be first and there should be a picture. Plastic around lock key broke because I was trying to pry around it.

mikebrownson -

I just closed it up and put it on charge, the guide was essential and really helped, count the screws that way you get them all, the pry tools are pretty much finished, that case just is a tough nut to open, those cables are so hard to reinsert but being careful they are delicate, with a little patience they went in, Ifixit has the best price on the charging assembly, Ebay was almost double?. Now I hope it functions correctly when its charged up.

Thanks

Can someone please update this? I feel like its not descriptive enough, Step four needs new photos. Also step five “When reassembling the device, align the two halves of the case before connecting the flex cables.” instructions I don’t understand. Also instructions for reassembling need to be added.
