If your Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (2nd Gen) randomly shuts off after getting hot, use this guide to replace the fan.

The fan cools down the computer and prevents the computer from overheating.

Before using this guide, check to make sure that nothing is covering the fan. The blocked fan may be the reason the computer is overheating. Also, use a dust removal spray to carefully clean out the vent. The cause of overheating may be the dust blocking the computer’s air flow. Cleaning the vent can prevent the need of replacing the fan.

Before you begin, make sure your computer is off.

    • Use a plastic opening tool or your fingers to pry off the cover.

Use the plastic tool as seen in the picture (pry at the hinge side) as on the nearside of the laptop are some plastic scoop brackets, so prying at the front will be a lost cause and may cause damage.

    • Using your fingers, disconnect the battery from the motherboard.

    • Using a Phillips #0 screwdriver, unscrew the five 4.3mm screws attaching the battery to the computer.

    • Remove the battery by pulling it directly towards you.

Before installing the new battery, the attached cables connecting it to the board need to be bent or kinked in a similar manner to how the old battery’s cables were. I looked at the old battery’s cables for an idea of how to bend the new cables.

Also, I saw how the old battery had some very thin foam attached to the battery (as seen in the photos), and that the replacement iFixit battery didn’t have such foam. I couldn’t figure out a way to remove the foam from the old battery without destroying it, so I went ahead and installed the new battery without it.

    • Use a Phillips #1 screwdriver to undo the four 5 mm screws attached to the heat sink.

    • Undo the black clasp that holds the ribbon cable, attached to the fan, in place and disconnect the ribbon cable.

    • Remove the fan by lifting it directly up.

Clean off using a cotton bud the old Thermal paste from the fan heatsink. When replacing the fan onto the new motherboard, you will need to apply a thin layer of Thermal Paste, which may or may not have come with the replacement motherboard. Apply the paste onto both metal plates on the motherboard.
