Overtime, the trackpad is a component that is likely to fail. If the mouse isn’t properly tracking movements or if the mouse isn’t moving at all, your trackpad may need to be replaced. If you have noticed issues while using your trackpad or you simply want to replace it, this guide will lay out how to remove and replace it step by step.

    • Remove the battery by pulling on the two sliding buttons next to the battery.

    • Remove the two rubber stoppers from where the battery previously was.

I couldn’t get the rubber plugs out with them disintegrating and don’t understand the value in removing them. I was able to complete the swap successfully without removing them.

    • Remove the ten 5mm screws holding down the motherboard using the Phillips #0 screwdriver.

Not quite that many screws. The two at the top aren’t on the motherboard, so leave them in place. Two on the sides (one below the fan, one opposite, just above the hard drive), are case screws that were removed in step 2.

    • Using the Phillips #0 screwdriver, remove the two 5mm screws that connects the toughpad to the computer.

    • Remove the cable in the left hand of this picture that connects the motherboard to hard drive.

This connects the motherboard to the *Touchpad*, not the hard drive. But yes, disconnect it.

Step 9a, remove the motherboard. I couldn’t get it all the way out, but I was able to lift it enough to expose the screws in the next step. Be careful doing this, though, as you will be bending the motherboard a little and don’t want it to crack. I don’t think I missed any screws, but there seemed to be some tape and wires that would have needed to be disconnected to get the motherboard the rest of the way out.

    • Using the Phillips #0 screwdriver, remove the the two 5mm screws in this image and then remove the glue flex cable being held.

Wrong two screws. Remove the two silver screws just left of the circled post (right of the hard drive well, in a hole punched through the black plastic). As mentioned above, I couldn’t remove the motherboard, but I was able to lift it enough to expose the screws and attack them at an angle.

Also, you may not need to remove the ribbon cable. I didn’t buy a new one and reused the old one without removing it. Disconnect it from the touchpad by pulling the black ribbon clamp down, toward the ribbon. This is similar to the connection to the motherboard at the other end of the cable.

Hello,

I would like to ask you one thing - do you recall if the TouchPad can be adjusted (position wise) before srewing down? I have this problem where the right side on the TouchPad is too close to the palmrest (between spacebar and the TrackPoint buttons), and when I click the right physical button it collides with it, providing not so great using experience. So I was wondering it is posiible to losen the screws and move it back a little.

Is it possible? Thanks in advance for answear.

Do I have to reinstall drivers after this? I replaced the touchpad but now two fingers scrolling is not working. Any ideas?

Do I have to remove the keyboard to replace the touchpad for thinkpad t450?

It does not seem necessary when following the instructions above!
