    • Place the Droid Maxx face up on a soft flat plastic surface with plenty of space to place your tools and small parts of the equipment.

    • Lift the Droid Maxx and turn it in a 90-degree angle to your left while you are holding it by the sides with one hand. Maintain the same position all times unless indicated otherwise in subsequent steps.

    • Find the volume buttons located towards the center of the Droid Maxx.

    • With your free hand, take the Spudger and insert it between the upper gap, closest to the screen, of the volume buttons and the Droid Maxx case.

    • Using the flat part of the Spudger’s Tip and pressing firmly against the Droid Maxx case until you hear a “snap” sound

    • With your free hand, remove the buttons carefully with your two fingers and make sure to keep the motion until the piece is completely out of your Droid Maxx. Do not bend or force the part since it also serves as a tray for placing a SIM Card.

    • Tilt the Droid Maxx towards your right so you can see the edge of the rubber back case and keep this position.

    • Take the Spudger and press the tip against the space between the rubber case and the Droid Maxx frame. Slide the Spudger’s edge along the surface until you hear a “snap” sound.

    • Work your way to the top of the Droid Maxx with the Spudger and use your holding hand’s fingers as support while you remove the upper part of the rubber back case. Rotate the Droid Maxx to facilitate your movement if necessary. Do not go along the bottom to remove the case.

    • Once the top part of the case is separated from the frame, grip the bottom part of the rubber case with your finger and slide the case down to remove it completely.

    • Place the rubber back case in a nearby place where it will not interfere with your arms motion.

one more picture would be nice to see the top part of the case separated from the frame before you use your fingers to slide the case down to remove it completely. other then that thank you very much was really helpful i wouldn't of figured it out, myself !

    zukcudo -

Agreed: we really could use an additional picture. You have to pry the case apart at the top before you can slide the back off by moving it towards the bottom.

    Fred Chapman -

It would be a good idea also to advise people to be very careful of the volume buttons. They are easy to break if a spudger or anything else were allowed to slide across them. Yep… I did that. Lucky for me I had someone quite capable to solder new ones on for me. =o)

    • Lay the Droid Maxx face down on the plastic surface to start removing the screws.

    • Take the Torx T5 Screwdriver and carefully remove all the screws in the Droid Maxx’s motherboard. Note that there is a total of eight (11) black screws spread across the motherboard, four (4) at the top and four (4) at the bottom, and also two (2) silver screws located to the right lower part of the Droid Maxx.

    • There is(1) screw holding the camera housing. Use a T4 screwdriver for this one screw.

    • After removing all the screws, lift hold the Droid Maxx as in step 2

    • Locate two (2) tabs in the camera plastic housing , one (1) at each corner of the Droid Maxx

    • Take the Flathead driver and gently lift both tabs to release the camera housing. Be careful because these plastic tabs are very delicate and can break easily.

**** The camera housing is held in place with a T3 not a T4!****

    dbmeyer2 -

Confirmed: the camera housing screw is a T3, not a T4. It's really tiny!

    Fred Chapman -

Can you please show some pictures of the tabs on either side of the top plate that covers the rear-facing camera? That part is tricky and not at all obvious from the written description.

    Fred Chapman -

Once you release the tabs of the top plastic housing on either side you can just pry it open. It maybe a bit stuck with adhesive but it comes off without fear of breaking any cables

    • Use the flathead screwdriver to gently pry the motherboard out of the rest of the phone.

    • Once the motherboard is loose, detach the flexible connector after removing the anti-static tape.

    • Now you're free to remove the battery

Not for the faint of heart. After successfully following these instructions, I was confronted with a battery sealed in a heavily tapes induction coil, never intended to be replaced. I spent a delightful afternoon seeing the innards of my phone, only to back out with the original battery in place. Much to my surprise the phone still works. This convinces me to do what my children could not persuade me- buy a new phone.

should have clinked on your comment before starting this, it would have saved me a lot of time and aggravation, not to mention spending money on some jewelers tools. Need to post this at the beginning of the piece. My phone is the Droid Maxx but does not appear to be the same as this article.

    bowwag -

I got the case open and started to loosen the screws and they didn’t seem to be loosening so I grabbed a different size tool which didn’t work so I made sure I in fact had the correct size torx but with a close up view I noticed that the screws were just turning in place and not coming out. So they were all stripped. I put it back together and decided to use it for target practice. I was a factory reconditioned phone obviously. Someone evidently worked on it before and traded it for a new one years ago.

Don't bother trying to remove the battery on the Droid Maxx, it's not possible without destroying the entire phone.

I spent 2 hours carefully tearing it apart trying to get to the battery only to find out the entire thing is made out of very thin layers of some kind of material wrapped in a thin sheet. The motherboard is physically attached to the battery layers. Its designed this way to make battery removable/ replacement close to impossible.

I agree. I got the thing disassembled, even though it was a much tougher job than is indicated here, but I am finding it impossible to reassemble the phone. The Verizon store would not even look at repairing it, and says the battery is "not replaceable." I may be able to get this mess fixed elsewhere, but if not I have destroyed my phone by following these instructions.

Brooks -

I have the same issue as the previous comments. I followed these instructions and now my phone cannot make or receive phone calls. I would not recommend attempting to replace the battery on your droid maxx.

With tedious and pain staking effort, Battery is replaced. At first it didn't work and had to open it up again. I found the big connector to the screen wasn't in all the way. In retrospect it wasn't that bad.

Randy Glezen -

I have done this for my phone and it wasn't bad. IF you have some experience working with small electronics and IF you take your time and use common sense, it's a simple thing. Previous people in comments must have thought it would be as simple as changing batteries in TV remote. This repair does not require the use of a soldering iron but...... If that is out of your skill set, then this is too.

DeWayne Shorts -

Are the pictures of how the cable is connected to the frame? I can't get mine back on!

Dawn Moore -

Cracked my screen because these directions are so bad. "Slide the case down" is not how this thing comes apart.

Use this instead:

(motorola x1030) sim tray is not opening . how to fix that. plz some one help me

mmimran86 -

There are a lot of people complaining on here that this repair is all but impossible. I was able to change out my battery just fine with this guide. Yes, there are a couple of grey areas that are left open to interpretation, but if you are experienced with repairs this should be no problem. Thanks for the guide!

Well, does this mean that I should consider it a "disposable" phone? Unfortunately I have the tools and experience but I am in my mid 70s and glasses don't even help, plus I am a disabled veteran with the shakes. If had known this when I bought the darn thing I doubt I would have made the purchase. Too bad because it is a good phone but I will not buy another Motorola again.

How soon was it all of you were needing to replace your battery? My phone battery has been running low too quickly for quite a number of months now and it's less than 2 years old.

Hey guys, the shape of my phone of Droid Maxx but I have single battery module in my phone?? How is it possible. Can anyone help??

jordanshazli -

does anyone know which is positive and which is negative terminal on droid xt1080 i need to fast-boot my battery after changing motherboard out, don't want to waste money on a cable, would rather just directly connect positive and negative wires from a cut USB cable to battery terminals but can't seem to identify which ones are which, i have taken battery off to remove motherboard and currently have phone disassembled.

Daniel Kruse -

do this work if u droped in in water

Benjamin Matthews -

No. Only in beer or turpentine.

I just successfully r/r the battery on my Motorola maxx XT1080 using these steps. As stated in earlier comments there are some grey areas that you have to figure out but it worked for me. There are a couple of components that are glued together but they do come apart carefully. I reassembled using small pieces of double sided tape to replace the adhesive. Phone works 5.0 and $15 replacement battery is holding charge much longer. Thanks for the help.
