Repair a stiff screen hinge before it breaks. Do it as soon as you ear some cracking when opening or closing the screen.

    • For a couple of months I was hearing some cracking when opening my laptop but never paid much attention. Big mistake. The left hinge was getting stuck, twisting the plastic cover corner to its limit. Until the hinge completely blocked today and the screen top snapped and slightly opened, as you can see in the picture.

    • As the screen cover was already slightly open, the first thing I tried was to finish opening it. Don't do this! It has some hidden screws so you need to start by removing the laptop bottom cover.

    • You need to start from the laptop bottom cover, return it and place it bottom up on the table, then remove the bottom cover's 10 screws, the bottom cover comes out pretty easy.

    • Then remove the round plastic protection (see picture). This wasn't so easy, it was kind of twisted with a few fixation tags broken, but after a while I managed to get it out.

    • Now I can see the hinge that is causing the problem and the broken plastic around it.

    • At this point you can probably loosen the 6mm bolt at the end of the hinge and that's all there is to it. But if you can't reach it then continue to the following steps.

    • Remove the 6 screws to take out the hinge. There is also one screw below the screens cover securing the hinge but in my case it was broken. If its still in place then you need to take out the screen cover now. There are a few screws to remove but I'm not sure where, as I didn't need to take it out.

    • Once you have the hinge in your hand check if its broken. If not then use a strong pliers and loosen the 6mm bolt until it moves easily. Remember that it must resist a minimum to rotation so that the screen doesn't fall on its own, when you open the laptop to work.

    • I had to make mine pretty soft in order to prevent the already twisted plastic from breaking completely.

    • Now you just have to put it all together and you're finished.

    • And remember: if it starts cracking, fix it as soon as possible!

Hi,

I have Asus N550LF which had the plastic hinge cover (round plastic protection) broken.

I got the part, but unable to fix it back on the laptop.

Could you please let me know which part to remove and insert the plastic cover correctly?

Thanks

Hi Gokulnath,

If I understand, you want to replace the round plastic protection (step 3 in my repair guide). Normally if you take out the back cover you can access it more easily. Then you need to pull it out, in my case I broke some of the plastic tags. Then just press the new one in and it should stay in place.

The hinge cover on the V551lb is a tough one. Place the laptop "Lid Down" & remove the btm cover. With the hinge side nearest you, Place the hinge cover as far to the rt. as possible with the edge with the most teeth nearest you. The teeth have to slip underneath about 12 keepers on the lid -- now slide to the left. Here's the secret: Work the keepers before trying to place the cover on so that they are "up" and the opening is sufficient....And the amount of required initial offset to the right is minimal, you don't have much room. Carefully slide to the left, if it doesn't snap in completely, or doesn't slide LEFT easily and feel solid and flush, remove it and work on the lid keepers some more. If your careful, you won't break off the hinge cover's teeth. It just ain't easy, and the "proper" way to do this may be to loosen the hinge screws on the right side to get a better run at it, thereby increasing your chances of getting all 12 teeth under their respective catches. Hope this helps!

Many thanks! I have one of these laptops and after only eighteen months gentle use (I'm retired) the screen hinge started to get stiff and then broke altogether. Managed to fix it using your information.

In my case I didn't get it early enough - the plastic hinge mount had broken off! I removed the hinge, glued the mount back on with five-minute epoxy, gave it an hour to dry thoroughly, fitted the hinge and reassembled everything. A very happy camper!

Hi Pedro,

I have Asus Vivobook Pro N580VD. I had the same issue and i got it repaired under Asus Authorized Service Center, and it was exactly about 1 year after the purchase( Under Warranty). Now its been 2 years and 1 month exactly and the issue is back.

The round plastic protection is slightly unevenly fixed, its slightly coming apart from the left side and the whole thing is moved to right side.

But when i try to open the laptop, i could hear the cracking sound from right side.

The last time when i had this issue, it was like this same. The plastic was twisted and it come apart at left side, but i heard the cracking sound at right side. So even i fix this, will it happen again? Why does this happen? Is there any way to prevent this?

P.S: One of my friend told me that the hot air blown out could lead this. Is there a chance for that?

Shivram Hari -

Hi, yes it will happen again :-| I used mine for a couple of years until it started to lock again and broke the plastic. It was time to buy a new one so I just use this Asus from time to time in a table and open the top and place it against the wall, as the top no longer stays in place. With a little patience I guess I can glue it all again but no time for now and my new portable PC is much faster :-P

I think the issue is mechanical, the hinge will tighten itself little by little and oxidation will do the rest. Bad choice of hinge and material…

I have same problem with n580vd , how I can repair it?

if I need new case for it, where i can find it?

leila kazemyan -

To repair it you must be able to open the PC cover and access the hinge directly. For new parts I have no idea, look around over eBay or Aliexpress, you should be able to find something.

Pedro -

The hinge on my Asus Vivobook is too tight! How can I loosen it so that it will not break in the future?

Sue -

Turn it over take all the screws out the bottom side you have to carefully remove the hinge cover then loosen the hinge nuts

bob bob -

The left hinge broke in mine as well. ASUS Vivobook has a serious Hinge issue. Be very careful when purchasing this brand. If you are not careful, this will definitely break.

The nails I’m supposed to use broke off as well… but I did the other steps well anyway.. Is there a way to fix the nail issue?..

Keyasha Harmon -

Yes you can glue it or epoxy it back but that didn't last long on mine.

You mean the screws? Apart from gluing all together I can’t see other solution.
