On the front face of the Sonos Play 3, there is a rectangular mesh screen. If this is damaged or there is dirt build up, it may affect the sound quality of the device. The exterior screen will need to be replaced or removed and cleaned in order to fix this problem. This guide will demonstrate how to remove the screen.

According to Sonos the grille is NOT removable. Looks like the adhesive mentioned above is there for a purpose. Shame really.
I've had my sonos 3 outside for three years, under cover though. It started to sound awful a couple of weeks ago. I thought they would try to remove the grille, but according to Sonos there was no way to remove the grille, it was a fixed assembly.
But yesterday I put more effort into googling, and found this page. I understand that it sounded bad, there was dirt, dust and other debris in it when I finally got rid of the grille, now I just have to listen to it, because it was late yesterday and I have to pay attention to the neighbors, so I could not find out at such a low volume if it helped, but I think so. You saved me from going and buying one or two Sonos 1 play, as my son suggested. We will have to wait and see until the neighbors around have woken up. I have high hopes that it works, Thanks for a tip on the unopening Sonos 3, shame on the one who gives up (a Swedish
proverb).
Thanks
