The Liberation Kit just stripped the screw. Now what.

Had local iPhone repair shop remove the screw. Repair complete!

I left the battery in and everything above the middle, using a pen knife to flex the logic board, I had plenty of room to else the old out and the new in.

Worked well and saved a lot of time.

After reviewing the steps I decided to follow this guy's advice and left the battery in.....one less item to possibly foul up. I don't know if it made it any faster (first time to open my phone, so nothing to compare it to) but I can say that my phone is charging for the first time in 6 months :D

    BEFORE YOU START:

    1) This is doable but not easy, quick or without risk.

    2) If this is your 1st time, the whole process can take >2 hours (half of it reading this fixit manual and notes, which I highly recommend!)

    3) I highly recommend placing a large, thin clean white cloth on the table. This prevents screws from rolling around and you will clearly see anything falling out.

    4) If you have them, use tight surgical (latex) gloves. This prevents you from greasing up contacts.

    5) Have e.g. a big old egg box ready, so you can place the screws in order (and maybe write step/screw size on the side).

    6) I bought my display from "Generic" on Amazon ($20.36). Screen works fine and tools were ok but not great (screw drivers do not withstand force needed to unscrew some).

    7) I had my own 2mm Phillips screw driver and a 2.4mm flat (for the big screws).

    8) Have a nice cold beer by your side! Good luck!

Sounds like this comment relates to a screen replacement, not a rear panel replacement. No way a rear panel replacement would take 2 hours - can be done in 2 minutes!

I was paranoid about stripping the pentalobes - I used the ifixit pentalobe screwdriver TOGETHER with a layer of Glad Wrap (cling film or saran wrap for the non-Aussies) over the pentalobe holes - absolutely no problems. Guess it helps the driver head gain purchase?

Anyway hat tip to this guy:

It's also called glad wrap in the US as well. :)

After seeing the comments about trouble finding the carrier, I shut down the phone, did a soft reset (by holding the power and home buttons until it started and then shut down and stayed off), and removed the SIM. After the repair, I replaced the SIM and plugged it in to the charger. It started up and found the carrier (Verizon, as it happens) immediately. I would guess that only the soft reset made a difference, but I did both.

Thank you David, will I need to reload operating system if I replace thr logic board? I'm hoping to use a 32gb boards from a locked but working phone to place in my 8gb device. Thanks for your advice,

I pried one end of the back off only to find 2 funny little screws holding the other end on so I took my Dremel, like Jack said, and ground those suckers out. Once I had the back off I loosened all the screws then turned it upside down and shook the crap out of it. The screws went flying everywhere and fell on the floor. Its my moms house so of course she's got gross brown carpet. How am I supposed to find my screws in that? I get the vacuum out and go over every inch of the floor to suck up all them screws. Then I dump the bag on the table and all I find is a bunch of hair and gods knows what else, but no screws. When I look for my phone I see its covered in all that stuff that came out of the vacuum. I mean, what's up with that? How can I work on my phone if its covered in dirt? Nobody said anything about that, did they? The average guy's gonna screw up his phone big time if he follows these instructions and nobody warns him about all the dirt that's gonna end up in his phone. Are you kidding me!! Now what?

    Marv -

Here's a little vacuum trick for anything small: put nylons/panty hose over the end of the hose and then you don't have to dig thru the bag contents.

The physical battery replacement went off without a hitch, and saw that the phone had no network connection, but also had no way to unlock. The slide lock said "Slide for Emergency Call" over my custom wallpaper and sliding would give the passcode screen, but it would reject the 6 digit passcode (it would buzz and go dark after the 4th digit, re-awakening and putting in the last 2 would indicate bad passcode). Very frustrating! I get it into recovery mode and convinced iTunes to "update" the OS, but it still didn't let me in. I performed a restore to fully factory reset the phone, and it worked! Sort of... the start screen kept being replaced by "Temperature - phone needs to cool down" but it's cold. Temp sensor is on the battery and returning to old battery fixed it. New battery is bad, and phone is wiped. Fun night.

I'm going to guess that disabling the password might save you from a similar fate. So, I'll suggest BEFORE YOU START, backup your phone and disable the passcode. Good luck.

Same here.. Going through that terrible night myself! Guess you had to return your battery right?

I didn’t find this particularly difficult, even though I’m pretty inexperienced at this sort of work. I watched the video overview to get me going and then followed the steps in the guide. My tips would be to keep the screws and parts organised as you dismantle, and ensure you read all the reassembly tips as you go; it’s easy to skip over them. I also found using the Liberty Kit to replace the pentalobe screws was worthwhile.

with a small driller, but I guess it is very difficult. Never attempted that myself on an iPhone.

There is no screw in Step 2?

Is the screw stripped or the head stripped?

I have used superglue on the screwdriver to remove a stripped screw, it would turn but not come out, with superglue I could turn and pull the screw out. May also work on a stripped head.

    Trevor -

If you are careful, use a Dremel tool and a micro drill bit (sold where Dremel tools are purchased) to drill it out. Last resort kind of thing, good luck.

I didn't see any extra screws holding the back in place. I had to use the included pry tool to get the back off. Just start at the bottom and pry gently...if you just "pull" like the guide says it won't work.

    Brian -

Don't use too much force to slide the back -- the back on my phone was hard to slide, and I bent and broke a silver metal contact tab at the top of the back (on the inside).

Those little screwdrivers are easy to mix up, for those of us without ultra-perfect vision! Once I used the correct screwdriver, and my 13yo son's little fingers and perfect eyes, it went smoothly! Also my son noticed that the rubber piece around the camera len was covering the camera; it likely slid out of place when sliding off the back cover. A little playing around (with plastic tools only!) and it looks perfect now!

    ashleedawg -

sorry but the rear panel is not pushed up. I pulled out the screws in the step 1 but still the rear panel does not move with even when I push it strongly.

    Doo Re Song -

I too tried to push and slide the rear cover without success. I then tried just pushing the bottom edge up with my thumbnails. It moved very easily forward. Just a few mm movement is needed and then the cover can be removed.

    Michael Lakeman -

The finger friction approach did not work for me, even when using a sticky pad.

Here is what worked for me: Grab the iPhone in your right hand with the screen facing your hand and the top facing your body. Find a sharp edge of a desk or counter and place the bottom of the phone's back cover on is so that when you push it, the back cover remans against the desk with the body of the phone sliding free. BE GENTLE as this approach takes far less force than the finger friction approach.

The replacement panel I got had two sheets of protective plastic on the inside and one on the outside. I used a toothpick to carefully lift and peel the two inside sheets off. One small one was over the lens on the inside. The other was over some large brown sheet of unknown function (though I think it goes over the battery). When I peel that away, some of the brown material tried to lift of with it, so be very careful.

    Dave Hein -

From this point go to step ?? Just peel off the tape from the chip. Take some aluminium foil and cut a hole the size of the chip (Use a second layer of foil if you don't thrust it). Heat the chip as described at temperature 300 deg C for 5 minutes. Let it cool down. Reassemble and ..... hura WIFI is on again.

    • Entferne folgende Schrauben, mit denen der Akkuanschluss am Logic Board befestigt ist:

    • Eine 1,7 mm Kreuzschlitzschraube

    • Eine 1,5 mm Kreuzschlitzschraube

This step needs a few more caveats.

The bottom screw on my phone was locked with some thread adhesive, and required more force to loosen it than I expected.

Even after removing the screws, the battery connector was rather firmly seated, and required a fair bit of persistent gentle prying with the opening tool before it came loose.

The ground clip came loose and nearly flew off while loosening the connector, so it would really help people if there were a warning on this step to watch out for the ground clip and make sure it doesn't bounce away.

    threephi -

I had the same problem with the ground clip! I’m glad that I didn't for it.

    iScott -

The battery connector is attached to the battery. You're not going to completely lift it out and remove it. It pulls out from the socket you can see in step 5 picture 3. The pressure contact (little black and gold thing) will probably just slide out from under the connector. Not a problem.

    DMcG -

I completed this successfully, but this step gave me the most trouble. The pressure contact is really difficult to reseat. So much so that it should probably be called out more clearly in it's own step.

    Greg Fulco -

If your pressure contact pops out you might find the video at http://www.hightechdad.com/2013/05/07/ho... helpful

I found this link to be incredibly helpful in identifying how/ where to put the pressure contact back in place

    Elizabeth Harris -

Top screw didn’t move with iFixit Philips #000 driver. The metal is too soft and in the result the screw was damaged while still in place. Having nothing to lose I also tried #00 and #0. Any way to remove the stuck screw? I would gladly saw it off if I could.

    viktorcode -

Ok, I had to drill the screw to break it. It was very delicate and time consuming operation. But in the end the screw cap finally broke off and I was able to remove the battery!

    viktorcode -

The Liberation Kit Philips head screwdriver strips the battery connector screws! It stripped the ne 1.7 mm Phillips screw circled in red in the photo above. I was able to remove the other screw, then I lifted the battery connector off while the red screw was still in position and wound the connector around in circles while lifting upwards and managed to unscrew the stripped screw. Advice, find a decent philips heard screwdriver for the internal screws like the two found on the battery connector.

    remsta -

Bottom screw was totally stuck, nothing could budge it. I removed top screw, heated up battery with hair dryer to release the glue, pulled it out using the spudger. Lifted up the metal plate thing (after taking out the ground piece and putting it aside). Cut off the flexible bit between the plate and the battery and twisted the plate around the screw as you did.

Well, the screw eventually came out—but only the top half! Yes, it split in two. Then the bottom half came out, still attached to the thing it was screwed in to (a sort of barrel).

I put the new battery in, put the bottom half (with the barrel) of lower screw back in its original position, replaced the ground piece and positioned the new plate over it, and screwed the top screw back in. Then put the top half of the lower screw in and tightened it.

    Et voila!

Extra: It was helpful to discover that the 1.5 and 1.7 mm measurements refer to length of screw, not size of Phillips head.

    Claudia Baragiola -

When reassembling, use EST tweezers to get align the pressure contact over the top screw hole. using the pointy end of a spudger to assist: put the point through top screw-hole on the battery connector, then through the pressure contact and into the screw-hole. this will help to keep the small piece in place while re-seating the battery connector. Leave the top hole spiked as such until the screw in the bottom hole is gently fastened. Remove the spudger and replace the top screw.

    tallismanproductions -

Pressure contact needs to be remain EXACTLY in the same position if you remove/replace battery. I had to re-open my iPhone 4S after a battery replacement (the mobile connectivity was lost) and tweak the position of the Pressure to restore functionality.

    Peter Schoeman -

I used my 16x magnifier loupe to be certain I had the pressure sensor aligned with the screw hole - no problem, no stripping. I consider it indispensable for tricky steps like this, and IFixit sells a similar tool for just $14.

    Jen Morris -

The pressure connector is the battery connector under the silver plate. BE CAREFUL. It seems like it'd be really easy to tear that pressure connector out without meaning to. The bronze and black thing is the ground, *not* the pressure connector. If you remove it just keep track of it and re-install it.

    Brian -

The phillips head screwdriver provided in the ifixit repair kit does not work well this these two screws after my first attempt at unscrewing the screws became stripped. The 1.7 mm phillips screw gave me the most trouble. It took an hour to unscrew after the screwdriver from the kit stripped the screw. I used a piece of masking tape over the screw for grip to loosen it, then used finger nail clippers as pliers to unscrew. I would recommend investing in a better screwdriver for this one step. Assembly is otherwise simple and easy.

    teeteebaby5 -

Here's a tip if you're having trouble removing the 1.7 mm screw. I had real problems removing it – the 1.5 mm screw came out easily using a Phillips #000 screwdriver but I almost stripped the 1.7 mm screw using the same screwdriver. What I did instead was use a flathead screwdriver from the iFixit pro tech toolkit I got, the one with a "–" sign and 1.0 size. That worked perfectly!

    Lars -

When disconnecting the battery make sure to use a plastic tool not a metal tool that could short out the battery

    Ethan Chow -

I would agree that a decent magnifier would help as the screws and components are small.

Also take necessary precautions to ensure the screws are not lost or mixed up.

Other than being a bit fiddly (particularly the earth connector), the only challenge I had not covered was that the battery was fixed with glue close to where the connector is and despite releasing the battery along the side, I couldn't get the battery to lift out using the tab. In the end I had to use the plastic tools to gently lever the battery away, working from the outside edge and ensuring I wasn't levering against the volume control buttons.

The new battery is in and following the advise given, I hard reset the phone and all my usual functions are now running... and if this £18:00 fix gives the phone another year or two of use, it will be well worth the effort.

    Dave Mann -

    Appoline -

I've gone through this process twice now. I found this video also very helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYYdbk3U...

The little contact thing that sits under top screw is always the biggest hassle to fit back into place (I do it after attaching the battery cable) with tweezers from ifixit.

    My personal tips:

    - plan that the incredibly tiny screws or the top-screw contact thing, might get away from you. so work in a space where you can find them easily. Not over carpet, etc.

    - I use strips of tape on a piece of paper to secure the screws while they are out, and position them so I know which one goes on top of battery connector, and the one on bottom.

    - If you have access to a spouse's/mate's iphone, in Accessibility settings there's a Magnifier option (triple-click home button) which does an amazing job at magnifying stuff at a circa 4-6" distance. Lacking any good magnifying glasses, this feature helped a lot. https://www.imore.com/how-use-magnifier-...

I wonder if the two screws shown on the picture are not inverted. It would seem logical to me that the longest (1.7mm) screw be placed on the upper hole, (where there is the yellow circle) ie on the hole where there is extra thickness (of the gold plated grounding contact sheet metal) in the sandwich. I have not checked, however, I just put the screws in the same location as found.

    Yves -

I was able to remove the screws without problem, but almost stripped one of the screws when reinstalling the battery connector. Be careful how much force you use!

    Matt -

    It does not work

    Jonathan Sousa -

When removing the 1.7 mm Philips screw, on rare occasion, the socket it is threaded into, might come out with it. (It depends on how little of that blue glue was used underneath on the assembly line.) Grab the socket under the removed plate between your fingers and use your Phillips screwdriver to back out the 1.7 mm screw from the old shield. Then once separated, thread back in the socket, into the case where it came from. You will want to do that before installing the new battery. You will need a small flat blade to span the socket hole in order to thread it back in snug. When the 1.7 mm screw is threaded back in with the new shield (with the Phillips screwdriver), it should tighten the rest of the way. Don’t over tighten. Great little kit!

No idea what exactly this step means. I just pulled the battery connector without trying to move the pressure contact. Installed new battery, plugged in connector and aligned the pressure contact slightly for the screw to fit.

Got a big scare as the phone would not connect to the cell network at first boot, only WiFi. Shut it off and when it rebooted it seemed to work. WIll probably know in a day or so if everything works fine or if there are interference issues, etc.

    andries -

This is normal ... removing the battery resets internal clock to start value and your provider doesn't accept that, hence no network.

Going online through wifi or manually setting date right corrects this after a reboot.

    Dreetn -

The black & copper contact piece is missing from my iPhone. Does that explain why my phone won't restore and keeps re-booting? I have tried every kind of restore with no luck. Any ideas?

After reassembling the iPhone I the GSM connection wasn't working. After cleaning all parts with isopropyl alcohol it still didn't work. The black ground contact needs still more "flagging." This is a simple metal strip that is attached ONLY by the 1.5mm (upper) screw. It will help if you look at it before you remove the upper screw. Notice the gold contact arm and point. That contact point must be in a plane above every other surface inside the device when you replace the battery connector, because it makes a ground contact with the metallic inner surface of the device back plate.

When I replaced it, I used the Pentalobe driver to line up battery connector and ground contact with the screw socket post. I then attached the 1.7mm (lower) screw loosely, removed the Pentalobe driver gently, and inserted the 1.5mm (upper) screw into the assembly. There is a tab on the ground contact that helps it align properly once pressure begins to applied. I completed driving the upper screw, pressing lightly with the spudger on the battery connector plate to make sure it was seated on the pressure contacts. Finally, I completed driving the lower screw.

    Matt McCaffrey -

I didn't find any need to remove the pressure contact. I just pried the battery connector up (gently) with a spudger and left the pressure contact in place. Connected the new battery and aligned the pressure contact screw hole. Replaced the screws, finished reassembly and all was good.

    Roger Mercer -

After reassembly, the CELL CONNECTION WASN'T WORKING. You might need to slightly bend the contact in step 5 up just a little, so it will make contact with the metal back plate. Did that and it worked perfectly.

    Great kit, great instructions, thanks!

    AirPhonesApp -

all those teeny screws...and the world is so...well...BIG!

after a lot of froofroo and very errant iphone behaviour problems, i concluded that that tiny grounding piece must be being lazy as hello. i spread it out a bit to ensure a better contact with the back plate and everything appears to be working smoothly.

did this repair, as well as the battery replacement...GTG!!!

spoke too soon, i 'spect...random reboots persist.

Just went through the replacement and the battery "plug" (step 5) on my replacement battery was slightly misaligned relative to the metal plate used to screw it onto the board. The plastic and "gold" "plug" was slightly askew on the metal plate, which meant that when the plug was inserted, the screw holes (step 4) were poorly aligned.

I managed to pull everything back into line using the screws, but the QC on these replacement batteries is a bit suspect.

    cvdwl -

Guess what happens when you rotate that ground connector 180 degrees...it grounds what I deduced to be the heat sink of the power amplifier for the speaker! So it is silent. It took me a couple of attempts to discover this as I was distracted by the new speaker not sitting down properly and a little dot of stuff under the main connector stuck to the pins. The latter was cleaned-off with a pin under 5x magnification followed by some isopropyl alcohol.

I suggest that Step 5 is more explicit about the orientation of this ground connector. It's only obvious after a really close look and if one has a lot to do like I did, it's a long time before one comes back to this step so the correct orientation is not obvious.

    Michael Scollay -

I accidentally removed the pressure contact and I was not able to put it back in place and so far haven't ran into any problems. Is this safe??

    Vasu Reddy -

I did it als well. All Funktionen well.but i am Not sure if that reduce battery power? Thanks very much for information

    Lupus -

The hole in the pressure contact aligns with the top screw. The IFIXIT tool kit I bought contained a black sharp “thing” that I used to align the pressure contact with the top screw hole. I used this tool to align the bottom screw hole also. I put the bottom screw in first but did not tighten it all the way. A good magnifying glass with a light helped a lot. Tim

    Tim -

Aligning with the black pointy “thing” definitely helps. Also, the small copper end of the contact piece is supposed to stick up once attached, to make contact with the back plate of the phone after re-assembly. The piece slides under the silver metal plate, and the the pointer can be used to align the silver plate hole and the black/copper plate hole in place for the screw.

Without that contact. Will the iPhone still use wifi? I need an answer ASAP!

    Gabriel Vaughn -

Nope, Just tried it and without it it won’t connect to cellular or WiFi

What if i lose that little metal ? Huhu

    Zheea Patang -

Reattached it before removing the battery in next step? Or you mean upon reinstalling after all following steps ? Little confused why I would disconnect then reconnect then take battery out ? Or that is just for reinstalling?

    Nikko M -

    Hi Nikko,

You’re right—reattach it when you reassemble the phone. I’ll re-word it to hopefully clarify that.

    Arthur Shi -

    Arthur, you still need to re-word steps 7 & 8 ;-)

Excellent job highly appreciate by the way!

    Regards,

    Antoine L

    Antoine Labourgade -

    Thanks Antoine!

I’m not sure what needs to be re-worded in step 8?

    Arthur Shi -

    What if you lose it?

    Andy Shen -

Can I use 72% ethanol instead of isopropyl alcohol?

    Hohoho Hahaha -

As I understand it 72% is good for disinfecting, but at that concentration there's a lot of water and therefore residue once it evaporates. I think that you'll need a higher concentration to get the best results.

This can be very tricky because sometimes theres just too many glue on the back of the battery, and eventually the battery will be deformed.

    Carlos Lopes -

Yes, there did seem to be a lot of glue holding my battery in. At first I was afraid of breaking it, but after reading up on the subject I've learned that it is okay if the battery gets a little deformed. Due to the nature of the battery it will still work if slightly deformed.

    djlogic26 -

I found the plastic pull tab to be useless. Peeled pretty much the whole battery out from the left side. Used a probe to "break" a few strands of glue to help. Just watch the connector and ribbon cable in the lower left corner as you pry up so you don't crimp them or damage them.

    gregsrow -

Try a used plastic credit/gift card to apply gentle pressure to lift the battery out of the phone, the short edge of the card fits within the gap on the logic board side between the battery and video cables. You can also use it on the opposite side if there is room between the battery and iPhone frame. This has worked on all of the 4 and 4s models I've replaced screens on.

I offer an alternative image if interested.

    Wallace Karraker -

Removing the battery wasn't necessary. I attempted the removal but decided not to in the end. It didn't get in the way at all.

    BigFatCat -

i also skipped the battery removal step. the battery didn't get in the way, but it did make it difficult to see if the wifi grounding fingers (step 14) were underneath the case lip. everything worked in the end though so i don't think removing the battery is a strict requirement.

    rippergirl -

How can you not remove the battery in a battery replacement fix? Step 14, there are only 7 steps. Me thinks these comments are getting mixed up between different fixes!

    bluezzer -

I did not remove the battery to do a Speaker replacement and had no issues with getting the Speaker out/in. So, steps 4 and 5 are required but not step 6.

    rcrodriguez2 -

The plastic tab is not attached to the battery. I just pried from the right and slid tools under until I broke all the adhesive.

    DMcG -

I found it easier to start by pulling the plastic lip to loosen the battery, then, if needed, use the plastic tool to pry from the side.

    superedu111 -

I tried to get the battery out as depicted in the first picture. It deformed and is now broken. Not happy. It seems better to leave it or get it out by gently pulling the tab.

    Paul Baars -

Please, Please, PLEASE avoid using probing elements to try remove batteries. I have had dozens handed in to me with punctures and two that actually started smoking due to people trying to prise the battery out. DO NOT DO IT.

    The best way I have found to remove the battery is this process;

    1) Try remove it with the pull tab directly, some will come out, some will not. Do NOT use excessive pull force else it'll deform the battery and reduce the capacity.

    2) If the pull test didn't work, then get a hot air gun on medium and warm up the area around the battery for about 30 seconds, focusing on the perimeter of the battery. If you see ANY popcorn'ing then you're too hot, you don't want to cook the battery.

2.1) Wait about 30 seconds for the heat to now wick underneath the battery to soften the adhesive.

2.2) Now try pull the battery up, the extra heat should have softened the glue that you can remove the battery without excessive force and without sticking objects under the battery.

Be VERY careful NOT to pull off the part of the connector that is on the logic board! Mine now has only contact but no solder until I can get a small enough soldering iron and a less shaky pair of hands!

    Rob Hendricks -

I lost the 1.5mm and 1.7mm screws when replacing my 4s battery. Is there a place that sells just these two screws? I bought a 4s screw kit from Zeeton.com but figuring out which screw out the of 39 screws were the the 1.5mm and 1.7mm was impossible.

    admin -

Buy a cheap pair of digital callipers ($20 -$30) and it will be clear. You can then use them to measure all kinds of things instead of squinting with a ruler.

    bluezzer -

I bent the wire of the silent button on right top of the battery. Now the silent botton don't work. The wire on the bent is half-cut. BE CAREFUL when you put the new battery inside!

    orzo -

Was having a hard time getting the screws back into the battery connector. Read another tip online that helped - pushed the end of my phillips screwdriver into some soft candle wax which gave it just enough stickyness to have the screw stay attached to the screwdriver while I was moving it toward the hole. Thought I'd pass that along.

    bill -

I did as wazzamagu did (and stated above), "My Pentalobe tool was slightly magnetized so I used that to bring the screws in for tightening with the Philips screwdriver." That made replacing the screws fairly easy. Thanks for all the advice on this page. It was not hard at all. Go slow and carefully, everything is smaller in there than I expected. The "searching" thing came up as it seems for most people, but just took a reboot and all is fine.

    amorteguy -

    TO ALL WITH NETWORK PROBLEMS!

I had the same issue with "searching network". After resetting the network settings in settings it did work perfectly!

    Klemt -

Took about 15 minutes. The only thing that was confusing was the reference to parts, using the partname, and I didn't know what they were referring to. So I had to figure it out by the photos. Slightly frustrating. Got it in and it worked. My problem then, was it kept SEARCHING and couldn't find my carrier. I followed everyones advice on here, plugged phone into my computer to itunes. then turned off network settings in settings, then turned them back on, and I got 3 bars. good to go.

    sally -

Instructions were good and everything works fine after replacement. Needed to use a tweezer on the pressure contact on the top screw of the battery. Thanks

I swapped out the battery today. No real issues. Pretty easy task.

    ddbbsr -

For the past couple of months, my phone had been dying very fast. I knew that my phone's battery capacity was getting quite low as this phone is older now, and is out of warranty. So I ordered a replacement battery about a week ago, and just installed it yesterday. The install was pretty easy, if you pay attention to where everything belongs. But my draining issue has not gone away. It stays charged a bit longer, my capacity is at almost 100%, yet it can't even hold a charge over night. I'm not sure what is causing this and would love any tips or stories from someone else!! Please help!!

    loucksls92 -

Beim Einbauen des neuen Akkus ist es sinnvoll diesen zuerst anzuschließen und dann erst wieder in die richtige Position zu bringen da man so dass Anschlusskabel besser verlegen kann

    Andreas Richter -

OMG thank you iFIXIT, the apple store wanted 3 times the cost of this repair kit. It took less than 5 minutes with most of the time spent trying to prise out the battery as it was glued in nice and tight but steady pressure from the spudger did the trick.

I think the best advice would be to touch nothing with your fingers as with careful use of the spudger I was able to position the tensioner point no problem. Everything else was nice 'n' easy.

Finally there was no cell connection only Wifi when I powered up so I simply powered down and up again and all is well in the world!

    Thanks again.

    Yvonne Frankl -

The battery was incredibly hard to remove. I slid the spudger underneath the battery from the right side as far as it would go. Then, I worked it from the bottom to the top. The battery still was adhered and wouldn't budge using the pull tab. I wound up leaving the spudger underneath the battery at the top and then pressing down on the bottom of the battery to get leverage. After a few strong pushes, and then swapping the top and bottom in the last sentence, the old battery came loose.

I used tweezers to hold the tiny screws and align them with the screwdriver head before taking the screw to the destination hole.

One more tip.. if you don't have any other cartons or containers convenient, use the box that the product comes in as a workspace for holding the tiny screws while you work.

    Steve B -

good tips, i took a couple of photos so i knew what it should look like and removed the screws and placed them in the order i removed them pretty easy if you take your time and be gentle

    Sam B -

Be VERY careful not to pull on the plastic tab before you fully detach the adhesive or else you will rip the tab clean off. If you did this it is still possible to remove the battery. I just used the guitar pick tool things to slowly work it through the adhesive and under the battery

    Zach Mangs -

It is possible to remove and replace the upper antenna WITHOUT removing the logic board!! So skip from step 7 to step 21 to 26 and 27.

    What -

Stuck on searching after unplugging and plugging in the battery?

This is due to the date and time being set back to default. To fix this you will need to synchronize the date and time back to what it is currently.

You can do this by either:

    - Connecting the phone to either a Wi-Fi network, Cellular Network (Mobile Data).

    - Connecting the phone to iTunes (It will synchronize the time automatically once iTunes is opened and can detect and access the iPhone).

Once the date and time is synced you will need to turn airplane mode off and one as it may display 'Searching... 3G' or if it still says searching (which most of the time happens if the sim card has a sim pin lock enabled on it) you will then need to turn the phone off and on.

    Ben -

Watched the video and ordered the kit, followed all the steps and it all went brilliantly - thank you all so much.

    diegodesignsbiz -

Is it suggested that I add more adhesive with the replacement battery?

    Sam Love -

One thing I noted with the replacement battery - from AussieBattery here in Australia; not from iFixit - but the same problem might occur; is that the cable on the new battery had to be 'tamed' (bent here & there like on the old battery, before I could reseat the screws and even the battery itself. One again the black - pointy & flat ended - spudgers, that we use in desktop iMacs, were helpful in getting under that battery and releasing it from sticky-!&&*! I used a pair of '2.5' reading glasses for this job, but '3.0' might have been better, as those screws are INFINITESIMALLY small!!!!! :(

    amicuset -

Thank you IFIXIT! The battery replacement went very well for me. I was exceedingly careful with the minuscule fasteners. Reading through the instructions, watching the video and reading these comments before jumping in helped. I found the parts and tools to be of good quality. I feel like I beat the system! I used a pair of diopter 3 reading glasses which was a real aid. I hope my comment encourages others...

My rare earth magnets came in handy when I managed to lose the little grounding connecter screws. Those little guys will go flying if, while trying to align them for reassembly, pressure gets applied in just the wrong way. I say one fly out and bounce off my shirt, then it was gone, on the floor I presume. I grabbed my stack of 8 little magnets, waved it around on the floor under where I was sitting and what do you know? A little screw was stuck to it! I never would've found it just by looking...

    William Wingstedt -

You really need to include information about the pressure sensor. It WILL inevitably pop out, leaving us wondering how and in what order it should be replaced. I had to look elsewhere for videos outside of iFixit to figure this out. Also, tell us which screwdriver to use using the label on the bit (PH000, P2, Y000, etc.). Providing only the sizes of the screws does nothing to help determine the appropriate bit to use when they aren’t labeled as such. Otherwise thank you!

    Thomas Price -

I replaced the battery and the phone started right up. But I cannot get it to charge It was half charged when it went in new and I plugged it into a charger Checked it later - not charged. I succeeded to replace the screen, but I made a mistake with the batterie cable, and it finally broke, seems that the cable was too long and I was forced to make too tight loop.

January 21st, 2020. My original iPhone 4s battery finally kicked the bucket. I just finished installing the new battery with ifixit.com and their parts kit. $16.99 and 30 mins of my time and the phone lit back up and is currently doing the charge for calibration. Thanks so much ifixit!

I succeed without any trouble. Tools and guide are excellent! Thank you

    Fabrice Bianchi -

Great instructions. Couple of things. If new battery comes with a removal tag make sure you remove the old tag, Step 7 could be clearer, the pressure connector just falls loose when you first remove the battery connector and its hard to work out how correctly realign.

Excellent product - and now for a glass of Australian Shiraz to celebrate

Abschluss

When I removed the battery the glue was holding it in. I used the screw driver to pry it out. It sparked and I'm sure shorted the logic board. VERY IMPORTANT ONLY USE PLASTIC TOOL WHEN REMOVING BATTERY! Now I have no service. I swapped a different logic board into same phone and works fine. Any suggestions on how to fix the old logic board are appreciated.

Eric -

Used a screw driver once to lift up battery, shorted the board. No display. Had to give another iPhone 4 to customer.

I now on always use my nail to lift up the battery. Never had issues since doing that.

Ben -

Well, the phillips screwdriver was a bit awkward. Had to hold screwdriver top down with one hand and turn driver with other hand. All else was as stated. Never had to touch any internal parts with my bare hands just used tools. That saves the worries about static or corrosion. One part that I failed to see in write up is the small case ground. Don't loose it it will come loose once screw is out.

brriverrat -

A couple of suggestions.

1). If you are over about 40, some sort of hands free magnifier helps a lot - I used a headband mounted jewelers magifier called an Optivisor.

2). A pair of fine tipped tweezers and a gentle touch will let you grab the pressure contact in step 5 without getting skin oil on it.

3). Work over some sort of tray to stop small parts from rolling away.

4). If you don't have a spudger or a set of plastic case opening tools (or you know you have them, but can't recall their exact location at this moment...*cough*), the corner of an an expired credit card, or a stiff guitar pick will work to pry the battery loose. It will likely bend the card though, so do use an expired one. I used an empty Starbucks gift card I found in a junk drawer...

npkeith -

I'm over 40, I wish I read your tips first! both a magnifier and tweezers would have helped, and possiby prevented the spark... It's charging, fingers crossed that the tiny spark wasn't enough to fry anything!

Did you check to make sure the antennae did not get disconnected? It is easy to disconnect, so you have to make sure to check that it snaps into place. The connector is the gold piece connected by a black wire.

Replacing the battery made my battery life ten times worse. Did I install it wrong?

kcwatanabe22 -

did you ever get your battery issue resolved?

antwan -

You may have installed a bad battery. Did you buy the iFixit battery or did you get a cheap one off eBay or Amazon? I've bought those before and the results have always been mixed. These batteries lose their charge just being in storage and so it's entirely possible to get a "new OEM" battery that is terrible.

Sheldon Chang -

Wow, this was a lot harder than I expected, but the guide was spot on and I was able to install a new iFixit replacement battery into my wife's 4s.

Sheldon Chang -

Install worked as described, and with a bit of luck.

There needs to be a more detailed photo/explanation in Step-5 regarding the positioning of the small multi-layered piece (with black coating) that is held down by one of the screws (above antenna connector and below battery connector) and that must be 'in-position' (without a screw) while you place the new battery and attache the batt. connector.

Thanks for the guide.

I zoomed in on the "before" photo and was able to verify correct positioning.

I have replaced my battery which is now powered fine but I now don't have a phone signal which is "searching" can anyone advise?

Vic Smith -

I have managed to successfully replace the battery but now I have no phone signal which just says "searching". Can anyone advise what I need to do ?

Vic Smith -

If the phone is not connecting to you provider (also date/time is reset), plug it in to your computer/ itunes for a while. It should go back to normal.

Ian Booth -

People should be advised that the screwdrivers provided with the iFixit battery replacement fix kit are slightly magnetized, which was a surprise. So touching anything except the screws themselves with them is a bad idea.

threephi -

Another general comment about this guide: the photos are very nice, but it would be extremely foolish to open your phone and remove the battery while holding it in your hands, as is depicted. Work on a flat, clean, open table top to minimize the chance of losing any screws or other parts.

threephi -

i didn't know what possibly went wrong, i enclose the assembly and there's no gsm signal, so i re-open the back cover and install it again, then the signal comes right back.

Fisher -

I was a bit confused, as my Battery APN was 616-0582, which was not listed on the "Replacements Battery Parts" which is sold here. Only Apple Part #: 616-0580, 616-0579, 616-0581 are listed there. But The 79 I bought works like a charm as a replacement of my 82. At least after restarting after I got a "searching" in the first two minutes.

Starkiller -

After I replaced the battery according to these instructions, I, too, had the scary "searching" error when looking for my service provider, even though my 4G was available. I plugged the phone into my computer and rebooted the phone. When it came back on, my provider showed right up. All is well. Do watch for that little black and gold thingy...it's teeny, and comes loose no matter what you do. Just pin it between the phone and connector on the top screw, with that little gold dot facing you. Put the screw in to hold it in place.

Chris Beck -

This was so easy! Slow and careful. The longest bit was getting the battery off of the adhesive.

It's medium in difficulty but it is my first repair! :)

emtandy -

Replacement went well, but I did encounter the "Searching" problem on re-start. Phone could not find carrier. Fix was simple though. Just reset network settings located under Settings/General/Reset (scroll to bottom)/Reset Network Settings.

wbggeneral -

The tip to "Reset Network Settings" is great! That solved the "Searching" problem; thanks! Otherwise, this battery replacement was easy peasy.

marbil -

This worked for me... maybe if I'd just waited a few minutes it would have re-found the network but this was fast!

Paul Miranda -

It's a easy work

Zero Knight -

Just changed my battery.

I concur with others regarding the "No Service" issue after restarting. Before tearing it down again to check the antenna connection, I rebooted the Phone and then the second time I had service. So if you are fairly confident of your handiwork then definitely try this first!

As others have stated it is worth keeping a very close eye on the black earthing clip and it's positioning before removal. It is held down with the top screw and must be repositioned before the screw is fitted. I used the thinnest end of the Plastic Opening Tool to slide into the fold of the earthing clip in order to guide it into place. My Pentalobe tool was slightly magnetized so I used that to bring the screws in for tightening with the Philips screwdriver.

Thanks ifixit!

wazzamagoo -

This worked wonderfully for me!

My iPhone 4s battery was discharging very rapidly since I installed iOS 7. Although I'd read reports that it's a software problem with the latest iOS, the phone is over two years old.

This repair has greatly improved my phone's battery life. Before I replaced the battery, when the phone reached ~7%, it would shut off at any time, and I could only use it for about two hours. The battery can now deplete all the way to 1% and I have much more battery life. I'm very happy with the battery kit from iFixit; it's revitalized my phone.

The battery replacement isn't easy -- the screws are very small indeed. The "pressure contact" popped out when I disconnected the battery. I had to look at the high resolution iFixit image to understand its replacement. To replace, first attach the battery connection, and then slide the "pressure contact" beneath the top screw of the battery connection. Fine-nosed tweezers make this much easier than fingers.

Marshall -

easy and quickly replaced the battery. thanks for your helpful guide.

sbaeriswyl -

The installation worked well for me. I did use latex gloves to avoid the transfer of oil from my skin to the device parts. The screws, particularly on the inside of the device, are tiny so it is really important to have good lighting. A free-standing shop magnifying glass would make the process of inserting the screws easier.

brhanks -

I just completed the replacement. The first time the device would not power on without a power cord connected. There was no service and I was unable to activate Wi-Fi. So I opened the phone up again, removed the battery connector, aligned the ground clip and cleaned it with alcohol. This time the phone was able to boot without the power cord attached, but the screen was flickering like !@#$ around the corners. Wi-Fi worked and so did service. After a minute I noticed that the flickering was less noticeable and now after 30 minutes it's completely gone. So if you have the flickering issue, just wait a few minutes.

tomteichert -

After replacing the battery the phone wouldn't connect to GSM. At first I thought it had to do with the pressure contact that connects to the back cover so I redid it a few times but no luck. Finally had to take it to a service center, luckily the solution was only a few minutes away. Connect the phone to a wifi network, pull the SIM card and then insert it again after a while, enter your pin and you"re up and running again. I was not the first customer who had entered the shop with this problem. Best wishes from Sweden!

Patrik Mellnert -

Thanks for the advice! It worked for me. I had to follow your instructions and also reboot the phone.

Federico Ghirelli -

Extremely good guide - took all of 10 minutes to change the battery without any issues. As always just ensure you have all the right tools and worth reading through other members comments. Well done iFixIt!

Adrian Casemore -

An easier repair than I anticipated. My advice is once you get the back off, take a minute to study the orientation of the battery connector and the small black ground clip underneath the top screw; it will inevitably pop out of position when removing the battery thus requiring realignment. Go slow and use minimal force when prying both the battery connector and battery. After powering on the phone, I too had the problem of acquiring a cell signal. After five minutes of the phone displaying "Searching," I did a reset (holding sleep/wake button and home button simultaneously) and when phone powered back on I immediately received a signal from my carrier. Looking forward to greater battery life between charges.

sbatzel -

- I had the same issue with "searching" network and I was *unable* to address it by: (i) resetting the network settings, (ii) removing the SIM card, (III) connecting my iPhone to iTunes, and (iv) setting the time automatically.

- Eventually, I had to manually set the date (especially the year) and time to the right settings, then reboot.

- After that everything got back to normal.

Asterios Leonidis -

just completed this very easy battery replacement on my daughters iPhone 4s. Steps are really easy to follow, one thing I found helpful was to use a tweezers to put the pressure contact back underneath the top screw of the battery connector!

collinsmikep -

This is soooooo easy.

I also had the 'Searching' issue.

Powered down, and back up again and all was fine.

Shame on Apple for making this appear to be elusive.

I did use a magnifying light, and a pair of needle nose type tweezers for the pressure contact. I also cleaned the back and the connectors with alcohol like they recommended, but not sure if it made any difference.

Well done ifixit!

motteatoj -

Followed instructions and had a perfect installation. Two tips: before unscrewing the battery clips, pry up the battery to loosen it from the adhesive, carefully. Then unscrew the clip and carefully pry it up. That way, there's no frantic popping of the grounding clip. Then pull off the battery. Also, once put back together, power up, then remove the SIM card and reinstall (like everyone else is doing). Presto, new battery and fully functioning iPhone 4s.

John Schafer -

Just recieved my battery. Replaced it very fast. The instructions were perfect. Now the only thing is if the battery is good, but that's not an object to the guide.

Thanks!

tenev -

Both of the battery are made in China. The battery which assemble in the 4s is produced by amperex technology limited, the ifixit replace battery is produced by SONY electronic(wu xi)limited.

sjh835170 -

Procedure was easy with two caveats:

1) I needed a small pair of needle-nosed pliers to remove and reinsert the pressure contact.

2) It took quite a bit of pressure to release the battery from its adhesive.

Everything went super simple. Before I shut down my phone I put it in airplane mode, after turning the phone back on I took it off airplane mode and everything was working perfect. I did not experience the network problem, this may be the trick.

DeFeo1987 -

15 minutes to change the battery.

No problem, it was like a child game!

After switch on a first time, my phone doesn't find the network...

I switch off and on and it find the network immediatly ;)

Thanks.

wleprince -

I have just replaced the battery in my son's i4s using this guide it took me approx 15 minutes. Once done phone turned on as normal but did take about 5 minutes to find the network. Thanks for the guide it was a massive asset.

Ray S -

Installation seemed fairly simple for it being my first time. I had some issues with the LCD Glitching a bit but after a few hours it went away. I'm currently monitoring the battery life right now with the app called Battery Doctor. I will post a reply in a few days. I would recommend reading through the comments before installation!

antwan -

It was harder than I thought it would be... the screws are so super tiny! I had to curse quite a lot to get them back in :)

My advice: DON'T DRINK COFFEE BEFORE replacing your battery! :)

I also had the "searching" problem, and at first my phone wouldn't connect to itunes (error message), but after resetting network settings and restarting my phone, all went back to normal. Curious how long my battery will last!

Tessa -

Thanks a lot from cold Germany - worked like a charm, took about 20 min with one interruption (soccer game on tv). Was my first try on an iPhone, and yes, the screws are tiny, and yes, you definitely need some extra light and a magnifying glass if you are over 22 :-D. I also had the issue with "searching network". After resetting the network settings it did work instantly! Keep on with the great work here at ifixit !

Kai -

Just got my kit, followed the instructions and had 0 problems except could use larger photos of the inside of the phone as we are going along. Oh and the pressure contact - I never did touch it with anything other than the plastic tool of the screw driver. Not quite clear what position that was in from the pictures, could use a close up there too. Otherwise iFixed IT!

abrahambloom -

It took approximately 15 minutes. I watched a video on youtube where a guy was replacing the battery with the one bought from ifixit. All occured without any problems, very well. I appreciated the way the battery was packed and the fast shipping. Thank you ifixit !

tontici -

After following instructions and replacing battery I still have not been able to get the new battery to charge. Anyone have issues with this? Otherwise phone seems to be working great.

spacerlede -

Rather old post, but anyhow, I have the same situation now. Will reinstall the old battery again to see if it is a battery issue or a broken circuitboard issue. How did it work out for you?

Daniel -

Battery replacement straightforward and no dramas. I had done the pre-reading (i.e. this guide and all the comments) and was ready for the black/gold bit to sproing across the room, which it didn't. Steps very easy as above. I removed the black/gold thing from the phone while I was taking the old battery out so I didn't lose it.

All went back together smoothly - I used a couple of toothpicks to align the black/gold thing + the connector from the battery before screwing them in - the ribbon on the connector was stiff and I was reluctant to be too heavy handed trying to force it in. So gently pushed it into place, screwed back in, back cover on and away we went.

Phone came back to life with 75% battery life and found my network with no dramas. All in all done before the children could come and have a look at what I was doing (10-15 min tops).

Many thanks - now to repair the broken iPad glass.

Kathy -

I had a 2,5 year old iPhone 4s.

Ordered new battery + kit.

Changed it.

A few restartes, sync with iTunes.

Perfect!

Now I got a new working battery!

daniellienld -

Does anyone know what the little green chip with the black chip on top is? It is on the visible part of the logic board just below the screw that holds the serial number plate on.

Simon -

i am sorry for you- My advise is, never bay a appleprodukt again. I surely won´t- It is so sad to fool consumer like this.

olle -

My 4s got submerged in water and I replaced the battery. Afterwards, when I attempted to turn it on. The apple showed up on the screen but no more. I took the battery out and charged it in another phone and then put the charged battery into the phone again. Once again when I tried to turn it on, the apple appeared and no more.

This phone has so many pictures of my children and important messages on it that I would like to retrieve. Any suggestions on what I should do to get this phone working again?

rooster -

Just did the replacement in about 15 minutes. A few notes:

1) Having a magnifier that you don't have to hold in your hand is key. I have a set of pivoting jewelers lenses that clip on to my reading glasses.

2) The Phillips screwdriver that comes with the "Liberation" kit is crap. Blunt, crude, wrong tip angle. Unusable. Get a set of real, or even semi-real fine screwdrivers.

3) establish a wide, open, clean area for working. If one of those little screws skitters out of your grip you don't want to be searching under table debris for it.

4) Pointy tweezers. With the size of the screws in this thing they won't seem so pointy.

5) The instructions above are vague about how the battery connector gets pulled off or pushed on. I still can't quite figure out the combination of sideways and up that worked. I ended up using the plastic tool to lever the connector to the right, while lifting...no, that wasn't it.

hiltondier -

I have to be honest, I went to the trouble of changing my battery using an ifixit kit but the new battery had no better life than the one I was replacing. I've been through so many guides trying to figure out if there is some setting I've got it on that drains battery life but I can't find anything. Meanwhile, I didn't have a warranty to invalidate, so to speak, but my only chance to rescue my phone now is to take a gamble that my insurance providers will be able to fix it. Now I'm worried that I'll have invalidated that policy. I LOVE the idea of ifixit's battery replacement kit as much as I'd love to stick it to Crapple but I'm afraid for me, this kit wasn't worth the money or the hassle. But on a side note, I'd like to urge anyone read this to avoid Crapple products. They're designed to fail so that you just buy more of their products but I will absolutely not be giving them any more of my money. Thanks anyway ifixit.

thetada -

Ok, so wash your hands. Get everything on a flat surface before you dig in. Great directions except I would add that prior to removing the battery connector cover, take note of the little black ground clip (with the gold contact point) which gets attached under the top screw. I had a hard time getting this back in place as I didn't notice exactly where it was prior to removing the battery connector cover. These directions are great otherwise. Thanks for saving me some moola by letting me replace the battery myself!

soczkas -

Be very careful as to where you decide to do the repair. I dropped one of the internal screws doing mine and my roommates and I spent a good half hour scouring the kitchen/dining room floor for the 1.5mm screw. Using a towel under your phone while doing the repair was an easy way to keep screws from bouncing away when I inevitably dropped them again.

Russell -

Couldn't have gone easier or better. One repaired iphone :)

thank you

andrewdbarlow -

That was INCREDIBLY easy to do, thanks to both your instructions and people's comments. 10-15 minutes, start to finish. Tweezers and a good set of bifocals helped too :-)

pmsynk -

It's very basic. Thank you so much fixers.

Onur Koc -

With the help of a youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYYdbk3U...) I got the battery replaced fine - but also had the "No Service" / Searching problem others have commented on ...

To round off the battery replacement instructions, it would be good to indicate to users that:

1) the Time & Date are set back to 1 January 1970 when the battery of the iPhone is replaced

2) to fix this, it's easiest to sync in iTunes ...

3) if the "No Service" / Searching problem persists, power down & up a few times

That worked for me ...

Thanks ifixit for the great product & service!

Alexandra zum Felde -

i swapped the battery y only have one problem with

that stubborn bottom screw from the battery connector

i had to get creative to remove it

other than that it just took like 10 minutes or so

i'm super happy with this new battery

thanks so much ifixit greetings from Mexico

konekonoir -

Hello, I was not able to remove one of the two screw once phones open, impossible. It became smooth. Can you help me? I think of having damaged the battery by forcing to remove the screw, and my iPhone does not light up any more.

juliette -

I did this with a couple of hitches. The battery glue sticks like sh1t to a blanket so I broke both my plastic tools trying to pry it out. I used the screwdriver to pry the battery after that and I got a spark, but fortunately I didn't fry anything.

The takeaway:

Go gently with the plastic tools

DON'T USE METAL TOOLS WHEN PRYING THE BATTERY!

shumbies -

The "No Service" error may come up after the replacement. As others have mentioned, restarting the phone again is the best first step. Then reset the network settings if that fails. I tried to edit this into the guide but it got rejected. I've seen other guides missing software next steps as well and then have to dig through the comments or search elsewhere for a solution. Not sure why iFixit doesn't want software steps in the guides as it is an important step to a solution.

datarez -

Took me about 10 mins to do. Simple and works like a charm.

ilockert78 -

Same here. Replacement was relatively easy, took 10 minutes and works fine.

captainkoe -

Very easy. Go ahead and do it. If your phone doesn't get connected and you are sure everything is in place, just sync with iTunes and reboot. Thanks for the gummy bears.

Seppo -

Just changed the battery 15 minutes ago and everything still works (so far). Since I'm so extremely near-sighted, I found it a lot easier to take off my glasses and go through all the steps dealing the screws and the ground clip having my nose about 5 centimeters from the phone. So glad I finally did this. I was going from 100% to 45% just getting up, leaving my house and riding the train to work (less than 2 hours). Hope I can keep it working. I stopped at the Apple store today and priced out the 6 and 6 Plus and %#*@, the exchange rate makes them so fricking expensive - nearly ¥100,000 for the 128G 6 Plus. That's the equivilent of about $1,000 under a standard 2-year contract like in the States.

markrosauer -

I did find that the phone took way to long to find the network again and when it did it was 2 bars short of full power which wasnt the case beforemso I went into the phones settings into network then reset the phones network settings and restarted the phone like a normal computer.

It was much faster this time.

Lindsay -

The instructions were good and everything works fine after the replacement. I had the often reported issue "searching network". After resetting the network settings it works perfectly again. Thanks.

Moritz -

I flawlessly replaced the battery my first try thanks to this guide.

Samuel -

Super easy. Took about 15 minutes. Once I turned phone back on it kept searching. I turned on airplane mode and then turned airplane mode off and it connected immediately. Now to see if the new battery makes a difference. Otherwise I may need a new phone.

Rebecca stilwell -

It works! The guide is really helpful, the kit brought everything I needed and more, and... everything came out perfectly!

Sebastian Pons -

I had the advantage of already owning the iFixit Pro Toolkit before I started so I was able to remove the spring contact under the top screw with the curved tweezers (and re-position it before putting the screw back in). I also used the tweezers to gently hold the contact still while I tightened the top screw. I also had the 'Searching' issue on bootup but I figured it was a network contact initialization issue since the network data would be wiped so I set the phone to Airplane Mode for about 15 seconds and then switched it back. It connected instantly. Hope this helps.

fixman88v2 -

the phillips screwdriver they reo=commend and then sell you does not work on the battery connector screws! beware!

erikcharleslarsen1 -

Relatively easy task, the only additional tool I used was tweezers in order to place the ground clip back in the correct location. Other than that the process only took ten to fifteen minutes, thanks for the nice toolkit and guide!

bbiritz -

Once iFixit sent me the right screwdriver (don;t get the cheap open, get the pro grade) I was able to do the swap in less than ten minutes. It's easy, and I'm an idiot, so do it yourself and don;t pay someone to do it for you.

erikcharleslarsen1 -

Nice guide. I had a trouble free install (other than getting the tiny screws stuck between the battery and the rest of the assembly and needing to take my glasses off and peer intently with one eye into the iPhone - ah, the joys of ageing). But watch out for that little pressure contact - mine popped out and away when I was prying open the battery connector. Thanks folks for a great guide and also parts kit!

chipfelton -

I just got my phone working again after switching the battery. Lets see what my new battery life is like. @ifixit: You need to include some of the feedback from users into the guides

Matthew -

I just changed the battery. The guide is complete and really well done (as usual)

10 minutes of work, iPhone working fine, no need to reboot.

Compared to my previuos iFix-experience (swapping the motherboard of a PowerBook) this has been like a walk in the park...

balockaus -

Everything went perfect. My only advise is to have a lot of light, magnifying glass, reading glasses, tweezers and good clean work area. So simple to do and took about 15 minutes. No doubt this is a do it yourself task. Great battery kit and instructions. Thanks ifixit...

toddmpire -

The guide was good but I found the youtube video more helpful, especially since the piece on that got moved on the video happened to me as well, so I was able to see how to put it back. It's been so long since my battery was properly working, that I am not sure if this new one is good. When I turned on the phone it was at 76%. I let it drain completely yesterday before charging it overnight. It's only half way through the day and it's down to 32%. Is this normal? I've not used it overly today. How often should a charge last for relatively average usage (checking emails, online a bit, texting)?

Could thenew battery be bad? I'm going to give it a few more days and monitor it.

The kit itself was pretty easy to use, the biggest issue being my eyesight isn't what it used to be, so thankfully had a friend to help. Just hoping the battery is ok and I don't have to do it all again.

tskatz1313 -

Excellent guide. This is so easy to follow and do. It took approximately 15 minutes. I also watched a video on youtube where a guy was replacing the battery.

http://www.cnet.com/au/news/how-i-replac...

I did encounter the "Searching" problem on re-start. The phone could not find my service provider, but the fix was very simple, I just re-booted the phone and it was back to normal.

Ice Froggy -

I have replaced battery and it seemed to work, then i tightened down the screws and now nothing will show up on the screen like its not getting power, any ideas?

damon -

Very easy to do with help of the kit. I also replaced the screws but honestly i dont see the point. The philips screws are more fragile in my opinion. And as somebody else said, if your eyesight is bad, use glasses. The screws are so tiny!

Michael Schouman -

Good stuff, great. A recommenation: Take a sheet of paper, put the stuff you dismantel on it, put a circle around it for each step and add the number. This will help during reassembly, especially the 2 different screws in step 4. Greetings from an old? (>60) German.

Gerd -

Instructions were great!. The pressure plate come off when removing the battery. Use fine tweezers to replace and orient. A good light and magnification are also very helpful.

vernonnesmith -

Received the kit to replace a 4s battery today. After reading through the instructions and comments, the task only took about 10 minutes. Very easy.

rohrmann -

Less than 5mins total. Just did it and looking forward to a longer battery life between charges.

shorelinejeff -

I followed the instructions but am unable to get the phone to power on unless it is connected to a alternate power source, tried rebooting phone, I still get the same result,

When I unplug phone it loses power and goes dark, battery meter on phone says it's fully charged! Does SIM card need to be reinstalled before powering phone on?

Jeff -

In general: Watch several videos before diving in. Wash your hands, and/or put on some snug fitting nitrile gloves. If your eyesight is not what it used to be, then use a magnifying light lamp or perform in a very well lit area. Re: Step 1 - At first glance, the two screwdrivers included in the kit look very similar; in order to avoid confusing the two, place a piece of colored tape on one of them. RE: Step 2 - push gently with two thumbs, but don't overdo it. The back plate will only slide forward 2mm - a very small space. Re: Steps 4 & 5 - Recommend using the kit box, or several small trays to set aside the 2 battery connector screws and pressure contact plate. These pieces are very small! The kit's screwdrivers are magnetized to hold the screws, but not the plate. Re: Step 7 - Some of the battery adhesive may come loose from the phone and battery, and ball up into a wad. An exacto knife can be used to gently excise any wadded up portions of adhesive.

pwesthelle -

Just received my replacement kit for iPhone 4s in the mail. Had the new battery in and working within 20 minutes and I'm no expert. I would HIGHLY recommend anyone having issues with their iPhone 4s battery to purchase the kit and make this fix.

jim -

Brilliant ... easy to follow ... had screw head strip (lower battery connector) but got it out ok in the end ... (gentle pressure)

On re starting phone it couldn't get signal ..just searching ... did "hard reset" and it was fine ... excellent !

You need good magnifying glass if your eyes aren't perfect ! (maybe even if they are)

andrewandrew -

Is there a trick to get the corner screw by the headphone jack in the bezel w/o having to remove parts around it. I just cannot seem to get the screw to thread correctly

I am using the PH000 head that came with the 54 bit driver kit.

aggiphixit -

Thanks for this how-to. I just replaced my battery and it started up with 56% power. How can I test this new battery to be sure it is a new battery?

measerp -

javiersconde -

Everything went great, except the common issue, that the iPhone would not connect to the providers network (no information about locked Sim also). Setting the date and time to manual and correct information before shut-down and restart fixed that problem…

tomric -

I can't believe I waited this long to swap my battery. The repair was easy using the kit with included tools. I had the phone apart and back together in about 10 minutes and I was working slowly so I didn't make a mistake. The only challenge was prying the old battery out. The plastic tool worked well, you just gently apply pressure as described in the guide. Now I am going to fix my old ipod.

gregorynowell -

Ho avuto un problema di ricezione dopo la sostituzione della batteria, che ho risolto mettendo il dispositivo in modalità aereo ed estraendo la sim card.

barbigor -

la durata della batteria è stata realmente aumentata?

Paolo -

Just changed out my battery in the 4s. Took about 10 minutes using the guide. I put the phone in airplane mode before doing a hard shutoff and the phone worked perfectly with no network issues. Charging it up now to see how much longer it's going to last...

andyman58 -

I suspect this guide is clearest to those with a bit of experience with electronics. Crystal clear, that is. This is not a difficult fix. Just use common sense and make sure your tabletop is secure!

bryanmartin -

I'm 57 and trying this without jewellers glasses was a mistake. The screws are TINY. I've worked on computers for years but never with screws THIS small! If your eyes aren't 20/20 get magnification for sure. The kit I got was from BattDepot and only came with one size of screwdriver. There are two sizes required. Dumb!! And the one screwdriver isn't magnetized so getting the screws back in has been a beggar. Good luck with your install. Mine's been more difficult than expected. (Should have bought the iFixit kit!)

Ted -

Hi.

My iPhone worked well except the fact that the battery was very used.

I change my battery by following these instructions and I succeed to disassemble and reassemble my iPhone without any difficulty. However, after having turned on my device, the cellular connection didn't work with the new battery. As written in the tutorial, I tried to restore the device using iTunes (in DFU mode and not). This message appear: "the iphone could not be restored: an unknown error occurred (1)".

What is the solution to solve this problem ?

bredin54 -

Hi.

I replaced the battery but the phone did not start. I plugged it, turned it on but it stayed with the apple screen, after 30 minutes, the same, black screen and white apple logo. I replaced it back with the old battery and everything worked fine. any idea?

dcantu -

Really easy. Recommendation: READ the comments! They were really helpful and gave me faith when the 4S refused to connect to the carrier. I plugged it into iTunes as stated, then hard reset it (no reset of network settings), and then it was working like a charm again.

stefanomanzini -

My iPhone is about 2 1/2 years old and battery life is getting a lot poorer, drains fast on standby and shuts off at 20%. Followed the instructions and like most it went well but had no carrier signal the first time. Took advice on bending the grounding pin up more, and that fixed the issue. I suggest that the instructions be revised stressing the importance of this ground pin, and noting that not having it positioned correctly results in the no signal issue.

pbrazis -

During the past year I would go to take a photo with my 4s and the battery read 45-60 %. As soon as I would take the 1st photo the battery would die! I an confident the battery replacement will eliminate this from happening. Battery has been replaced and is now recharging. What I did use was a toothpick to align the upper screw socket with the metal connections. The replacement took 20 minutes as I took my time and paid attention to the task at hand. Do read all of the help before you start.

bryanwcole -

I did it! No Signal issue was fixed after rebooting once.

This was my first repair and I nailed it :)

Also, I recommend using latex gloves. ^_^

Patrick Petrovic -

Just sent email to iFixit to see if they will send me another replacement battery. First thing that should be note I purchased my kit in February of 2015. Got and installed what looked to be a new battery. Very happy in with kit and installing battery was simple. Worked great for a while but less than 3 months battery died completely. Not charging and dying when phone at 21%. Just pulled old battery out of box and reinstalled since it does work and takes a charge while I wait for another replacement battery. ONE biggie new replacement battery was manufactured 01/2013 and old battery is 03/2013. Didn't realize til swapping batteries second time. BUYER BEWARE THAT REPLACEMENT BATTERIES ARE NOT NEW BUT USED BATTERIES.

massello -

took out the original battery and put in the new one, phone turned on and said 'searching'. I turned it back off and took out the screws again and pushed down the signal clip more and made sure the screws and pressure clip were correct. then I put everything back; PUT THE BACK ON, and worked fine. signal and wifi both working fine. please remember that the GROUNDING clip needs to be grounding to something: there is a metallic strip on the back part of your phone, in which its grounding to. you need to have your back on to make everything work, don't turn it on without the back on to see if it works because you may have issues. easy tutorial just take your time

Brenden Carroll -

Awesome instructions....clear, easy to read and great pictures! So glad you guys are in business!

grich -

Noticed someone else talking about pressure contact....that was in the version of the Iphone 4S I replaced the battery. Yes you will need tweezers and it goes under the battery contact/attachment connector. So please note that before you remove battery.

grich -

I was a little uncertain on the instructions but managed to remove the old one and install the new one and it works great!

joepug -

Great guide! The only problem with me is that they sent me a 1.5mm star-shaped screwdriver, instead of the 1.5mm Phillip's screwdriver. I had to buy another one, which was pretty hard to find. Other than that it was great! My Iphone works like new! Thank you!

Lucas Scheibe -

This was my first repair and I had no problems. Cycle count was at 1 and it took a total of 20 minutes. This video was helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJSSFZbr...

BryenTurco4 -

10 minutes tops. notes:

The white towel under the work space is a great idea.

Since the Phillips screws holding the battery terminal in place are different lengths, I marked the head of one with a felt marker (Vital advice from the 5-S battery swap)

The fellow suggesting to pry the outer edge of the battery loose before unscrewing the terminal had a good idea.

The tweezers from a Swiss army knife is adequate to remove, manipulate and re-install the gold tipped ground clip.

A toothpick for alignment of the jittery and jumping gold-tip ground clip is very helpful.

Lucky I had no re-connection issues.

I was so nervous to start after all the youtube video and read-through prep that I forgot to power down the phone. Lucky that had no impact.

griffn -

I bought the battery replacement kit and everything went almost smoothly. I just got the screws mentioned in step 4 mixed up. They are both really small but they are not the same size. I should have kept better track of them. The difference between the two are almost imperceptible. As suggested by others, a pair of tweezers and a white towel was really helpful.

alfredyip -

I did it without any problem. You just have to really pay attention to how things are set up and be careful not to touch parts that are not involved in the replacement. The pressure contact underneath the top screw of the battery connector will come loose while prying the battery connector from its socket so you'd better remove it entirely and put it back in place after you've clipped on the new battery's connector. Was full of doubts and fear that I'd damage the phone before I started but I m happy I went on and did it by myself cause it's not worth the 60 euros one has to pay for the replacement! Get the tools and use them for all your repairs instead! Thanks for the guide folks!

Zina -

Thank you IFIXIT. 4S battery replacement went well and took just 10 min. Network provider manually selected. Fitted the ground piece with the help of a toothpick ;-)

Jan M. Germany

janmeissner -

Very disappointed. The battery plug to the pc board was not the same as the original so I could not complete the install. Reinstalled original battery and now I can NOT power up the phone unless connected to an external source. After that its OK. Waste of time and waste of money. Now I cant power up if I don't have a power cord like after getting off an airplane. If Ifix it reads this you can contact me at chrislaletin "at" mac "dot" com

chrismargaret -

I tried today as my old battery didn't perform any more. The replacement went like a charm, done in 5 minutes. After booting and entering the SIM code, the network was not found. I plugged it to iTunes, rebooted while plugged in and then all started work as it should. Thanks for the great guide!

I bought the battery replacement kit a few weeks ago, and made the replacement today. But I had to put the old battery again, as the " new" one did not give any result : the phone was acting as without battery (was only able to put it on when connected to a charger or a computer). It is not an issue with the replacement procedure, as the guide is clear, and I had no trouble having my phone working again with the old battery (and I tried twice with the new one).

Can the battery I received be malfunctionning ? (using a multimeter, I see a voltage bias of 3V approx. between some of the pins, so it is not totally dead)

Any other idea at what might be the problem ?

tuabihtucl -

easy breezy lemon squeezy :). changed the battery no glitch. Even though i am not very good with these kind of things, the step by step guide made it really simple. Thankyou.

saharazizahmad -

I thought iphone is so sophisticated and changing battery will be a pain in the @%^, it turned out so easy following the picture instructions. Great! Thanks a lot!

savershen -

Actually ordered the battery because it was time and because there was a rattling sound in my 4s.

I did some researching and saw that it could be the lock/power button screw. I opened up the phone and saw a screw sitting in the top corner of the phone. I took it out but didn't replace this as I wasn't up for a major teardown. I just didn't want to short something out. Anyway, the whole thing took 10 minutes and the phillips screwdriver from the liberation kit fit all the screws inside. Not mentioned anywhere but everything was there w/o any synch/restore afterwards.

It's actually easier than the guide would lead you to believe! Thank you iFixit!

NitWit -

Easy peasy, lemon squeezy. For $24, buy this kit and fix the battery yourself. The kit showed up at my house within 3 days of ordering it (from CA to the east coast) and the instructions couldn't be simpler. Included in the package is a liberation kit, which replaces the screws so that special tools are not needed to fix the phone in the future. Overall, a great purchase. This probably saved me close to $100 with quality parts and easy instructions.

shotthebreeze -

can anyone tell me what happens if the ground contact is not reinstalled. Like so many others of you, the screws on my phone were stripped by the screwdriver provided, and the ground contact had been left out

peter edwards -

Excellent guide. I'd bought the iPhone toolkit, which is absolutely essential. The screws are so tiny I placed them on a strip of sticky tape, carefully labelled, so they wouldn't get lost. The best news is the new battery worked. Like someone earlier I had to restart the iPhone for it to recognise my phone network. I used iBackupbot to find that my old battery's full capacity had become 900 mAh after 343 charge cycles. That's just 63% of the design capacity. Not good. I also found lots of online stores selling cheap iPhone replacement batteries. Feedback from many customers indicates these are used batteries (lots of charge cycles!) and should be avoided like the plague.

Robert Grindley -

I am so thankful to ifixit for boldly going where no on has gone before on these procedures, greatly appreciated! I followed the steps and all seems to work well. that ground wire referred to did not seem to move in mine and stayed in place when i removed the battery connector. There was no adhesive left to use on new battery so i just put it in and the case seems to hold in place tightly nothing loose when I move it around. And I did use a dab of 91% alcohol on any of the metal of battery connector i touched and also the inside back of the case which looked like it has some fingerprints and not sure if that metal is part of the antenna system. And yes the slightly magnetized screwdrivers work great to position the screws! The battery had a 47% charge and seems to be charging nicely right now. Crossing fingers!

macdaddybill -

It took about 5 minutes :D

mak22223 -

I had The "Searching" Issue. I gave it ten minutes and nothing. So I reset the network settings via Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings and the problem persisted. However plugging it into my PC seemed to work and it found the network (thank god since this is my work phone). However I do have the problem of the phone resetting itself every minute (quite literally, every minute). I don't know what this could be I've taken another look inside but nothing looks out of the ordinary. Any help would be appreciated.

Harry Hall -

This kit worked great. The battery swap took a total of 4 minutes. The internal screws that need to be removed are ridiculously small, so it was great to have the magnetic tipped screwdrivers! They makes all of the difference for an easy peasy installation.

george -

The tools are right and the install was flawless, minus the tediousness of putting the ground clip back, but it's all part of the game. I didn't bother with the replacement screws which wasn't an issue.

20thme -

If mobile network doesn't work remember to set up right date and time, and after this to reboot device!!!

Stefano Laudati -

Hi, I changed today for a new battery. It took me about 1 hour. You need good light and very good eyes or a magnifyer.

My most difficult part was getting the tiny black switch under the metal and fix both with the tiny screw. Fortunately the supplied screwdriver had a magnetic tip.

after replace my batteries on iphone 4s with guide from ifixit

when im turn iphone on , i've got no signal

i dont know whats wrong

im carefully follow the guide step by step, i not go to any step further before make sure that my step is exactly same as ifixit explained

im googling over and over to know what make my iphone no signal after replacing battery

and then finnaly i found it

thats becouse every iphone 4s that have changed the battery , the setting time and date are roll back to jan 1900. thats why iphone cannot get any signal from provider

after setting time and date back to the future.. voilaaaa my signal is back

conclusion is. if you guys get problem with no signal after replace battery. go check your time setting.

thats my story. sorry for bad english

dodyadityamobile -

I give the product an A (so far; it has just reached 93% charge after starting at 50 an hour or so ago, but it seems to be fine), but the instructions above a C at best (I think I am being a pushover; a real teacher would make it a C- or D+). The only difficult part (really the only part that is not obvious) is the tiny connector (black on one side, gold colored on the other), which falls out and then one has to look at the comments, and then look further on the Internet, to figure out what to do with it. Really, not to even mention this critical item (with its critical orientation), and/or show a picture of it even, is bizarre. Why?????

So kudos for making it possible, but please rectify this omission!

jsheats -

That was super easy

Omer Katzir -

I just did it for the second time - and it took me only a few seconds! Okay - to be honest a few minutes.

It's much easier than one might think.

You just have to lose the fear of the apple! It´s not poisoned!

BlackSenator -

Easy. Did need tweezers for the little ground clip. A better detail shot of that in the guide would be helpful. Most pleasing was having ordered late Friday night and selecting standard USPS shipping to Iowa, battery arrived Monday three day ahead of schedule. Thanks.

iPhone 4s Battery Kit = AWESOME!

I'm a computer tech but have never really worked on phones... Read through the instructions (with pictures) on the ifixit website and decided I would give it a shot and I'm glad I did because it was stupid simple and straightforward!

Thanks ifixit!

mattmurphy -

To install the battery it is not true that you do exactly the reverse.

One thing I struggled with was getting the battery connector back on. The trick I saw later on a video was to:

- First attach the connector, and after that

- Place the battery in the phone

The advantage of this is that the flat cable does not "work against" the connector when trying to click it back on. Would have saved me quiet some time.

Daniel -

Worked perfectly. iFixit: Really great job on the guide ... the parts ... and the tools. I like how iFixit provided replacement phillips head screws to replace the pentalope screws. When you have it back together, a hard reset does the trick to bring back cellular signal. I also did network reset for good measure.

hepmac -

Good guide but left out that it is hard to put the back of the phone back on after the new battery was put in. But beside that it was a quick and easy repair.

miloasoc -

Kit worked great. My old eyes were at about their limit with those tiny screws but it all went good. The biggest issue I had was the battery was really stuck down and took a lot of playing to get it loose.

Great instructions

Chet -

I have just replaced the battery for my phone today. It works well.

If there is a "no signal" problem, just go to Setting -> General -> Reset -> Reset network

Thank IFIXIT. :D

Thanh Chau Nguyen -

Received it quickly and perfet. Super easy to change, took me top 15min. No problem at all after 48h. Thanks iFixit

Francois SILVA RAMOS -

well done, took me 5 minutes. thanks!!!

Stefan Prager -

I just changed the battery on my 4s, but it is stuck on the apple logo on start up. Any suggestions?

Melissa Sweeney -

~ ~ SUCCESS ~~

Avoided the cheap batteries after several warnings and got the toolkit as recommended.

I flattened the old battery and followed the instructions.

Kept the two battery clip screws separate and the tiny black clip in a safe place.

Lots of gentle prying to get the battery out ~ patience not brute force needed here ~ don't lever against fragile bits!!

Battery out, new battery clip attached and battery in place, bottom screw fitted loosely then little black clip sipped under the battery clip and screw put in and both tightened.

Pressed new battery down to try to attach to glue left behind.

Case on and screws in. Plug into Mac and see the Apple appear and then the whole thing came back to life. It went on and off twice and then settled down,

Did a reset with the two buttons and now I'm cleaning out the Apps I don't use any more and changing some of the settings to make certain Apps are using up my new battery.

MANY THANKS IFIXIT

I'v replace my Battery in Iphone 4S now it will not charge in the car what did I do wrong?

can any one help

Stan

Stanley obrien -

I have changed my battery, now when I charge it every couple of minutes it vibrates and comes up with the apple start up sign, also when it gets to 100% charged it doesn't count backwards to 1% so have no idea how much charge is left and then it turns off when if runs our of charge? Any ideas how to fix this problem please?

Janeen -

If you are getting issues with your cellular service no connecting, follow these steps.

1) Turn off the phone.

2) Remove SIM card using tool.

3) Replace SIM card (just slides back in)

4) Turn phone back on.

If problem persists, try a hard reset. Then from there try a restore.

Anything past that is most likely a hardware issue. You may have broken a cable or damaged the board in some way.

Creplav -

Very Useful Instruction with good pics.I Followed the steps and replaced the Battery within 10 min. Thanks!

Stefan Mostert -

that i want to know that How Much is the replacement batter thanks

crystal dick -

Ok, I thought, I'm up for a challenge to change my 4s battery. It was harder than I thought. The tutorial and comments were helpful but it took me forever to get the screws back in the silver plate! After some time and frustration I figured out you need to " click" it back in! Once I got that the little gold thingy slipped right under the plate and voila! I got the screws in. Now I've done it once it should be easy next time! Word of warning; keep light pressure when handling screws until it gets matched with hole they kept flying off. Recommend putting white sheet/towel on floor way easier to find that way.

maria titko -

Awesome instructions! I fixed my girlfriend's phone in a manner of minutes.

Steve Wells -

If your signal says "Searching..." do not panic! Just go to settings->general->reset->reset network settings. That fixed it for me. If that doesn't help, maybe then start to panic.

IPhone 4s Battery Replacement worked fine, Documentation that describes the steps is good. The Phillips screwdriver that came aus Part of the Kit does not fit to anything, not to the 2 screws in the iphone and not to the liberation screws.

Christina Fuchs -

iPhone 4s battery replacement worked fine. The Phillips screwdriver that comes as part of the kit does not fit, not to the liberation screws and not to the 2 screws within the iPhone.

Christina Fuchs -

The instructions were clear and easily followed. Thanks.

BruceARalston -

I replaced the original battery with a cheap high capacity battery from ebay. When I turned the phone back on it said 'searching..' in the top corner and the sim card wouldn't work. I read on a website that changing batteries can do this, so I changed the batteries back and the phone requires a factory reset. When I try to restore the phone it gets about halfway through the restoration process before an error message comes up and says 'unknown error (-1)'. I have tried restoring the phone 5 times but it keeps happening, can anyone please explain the problem?

Tiger Callahan -

Did you try a hard reset? Sometimes after a battery swap the phone cannot find a cellular network because it is set to the wrong time, and a hard reset, or connecting to a Wi-Fi network can reset the phone's clock and allow connection. If you're still having problems, you might try asking this question in our Answers forum, we have many more experts there, iPhone 4S keeps searching after screen replacement!

Sam Goldheart -

Thanks heaps. The instructions were spot on. Job completed in about 15 mins.

eddy -

Hi. I've just changed the battery over yet when I turn my phone (4s) on the apple sign comes up , then disappears then comes on again. Tried holding on/ off buttons down for 10 seconds but nothing changed ? Any ideas please

Claire -

Be patient working the battery free from adhesive. Take extra time prying from right side til adhesive is truly free. All else was smooth. Worked great.

Bart Bartkowiak -

Take extra time to fully release adhesive by prying on right side of battery before you pull on tab. All else quick and smooth.

Bart Bartkowiak -

The battery is attached to the battery connector by a black band that for me did not fold into place easily. It required some fiddling but eventually went in place. Also, jeweler' pickups were useful in placing the pressure tab (gold contact up) under the top screw of the battery connector which then seemed to go into place after the screw was tightened. 10/8/2016

theodore thomas -

Thanks again - about 8 minutes to complete - 1 problem the Phillips screw driver sent in the kit was too big for the screws holding the battery tab, but this was not a real problem as I have a selection of Phillips screw drivers of the proper size.

The other 5-point screw driver fit just fine.

addonii -

Nice one. Thanks. Worked well for me...

When I rebooted it seemed first like problems with the GSM data. Voice Call and 3G data worked fine. After another reboot and a few minutes it's all good now. Charging now and hoping for battery life improvement over my 5 yr old battery.

Anselm Kusser -

Just finished using this kit - some notes for all:

1 - Tools - I did NOT use the Phillips tool with the kit after reading several comments about stripping the incredibly small screws, I used the smallest standard screwdriver I had in a jeweller set that I already have. Note that these 2 screws are VERY small, and can tend to drop back into the body when re-assemembling. A set of tweezers is very helpful, both with this and the grounding clip. Shaking out the screw driver on the top had to be done several times, along with resetting the ground clip - this really seems to be the hardest part.

2 - PLEASE look at the video from HighTechDad re: the grounding clip!!! It readily points out how this part can (and will) pop off when removing the battery connector. Watch the video FIRST to see how the clip is oriented, and tweezers are very good to use here.

I had a magnifying glass handy, just to get a good look at the connector after getting it apart.

THANKS IFixit!

Jay Naik -

I have just replaced the battery on my Apple 4S using the IFixit kit. All seemed to go well until I switched it back on. The charge on the new replacement battery was about 56% and I was getting a good wi-fi signal. However, I could not open the phone as a warning screen appeared stating Temperature - "IPhone needs to cool down before you can use it" I have tried a hard reset and also taken the sim card in and out but to no avail. I charged the battery up to 100% and tried again but still with the same temperature warning. I don't know what else to do. Does anyone have any ideas?

Julian Renselar -

I have the same Temperature - "IPhone needs to cool down before you can use it" error. I believe this is a problem with the new battery. If I put the original battery back in, the iPhone works fine. If I put in another new battery that I have (also from iFixIt), the iPhone works fine. Just one of my new batteries exhibits this problem. I've contacted iFixIt for a replacement. Still waiting to hear back from them.

Tolle Anleitung - echt Klasse vor allem mit eurem Werkzeug.

Austausch des Akkus hat ohne Probleme super geklappt .

Martin Winter -

Written steps were very clear, pressure plate popped out, but was replaced easily. I actually put the screw in to secure the pressure plate before I completely seated the battery, because getting the battery in was getting the tiny plate out of alignment. Used previous suggestion to put in airplane mode before shutting down and both wifi and phone came up right away. I'm 61, wearing glasses under bright light, and it went pretty smoothly.

Chris Petersen -

It took me all of about 5 min from start to finish after watching the video phone fixed I was amazed how easy it was and I'm an old fart

After the replasement my Apple charger doesn´t charge properly. When I plug it in over the night, it seams to charge but in the morning the battery is emtpy.

Does some knows why? Does the Apple charger see if the battery is not a original part?

Thx for help

My battery install went smoothly. Took my time and followed the directions step-by-step. Took about 40 minutes. Phone booted right up.

Jim -

My battery install went well. I followed the directions step-by-step. Had problems folding the battery connecting wire so that it would not stick up and interfere with the closing of the top. Also the small grounding clip was a pain. Took about 35 minutes and it booted right up after doing the "Hard Reset" Phone works fine. Thank you Ifixit. Charging now.

ronald bender -

Had no signal. Took cover off and flexed up the ground tab and cleaned the back of the cover and the connector with alcohol and signal then found.

Robert DeAngelis -

AWESOME. It was really 10 minute repair. Easy to take the cover off, and it was easy to take the battery out. The battery temperature is at 25 degC. The only hard part was slipping the cover back on.

Mark dagyroid -

When I finally got one screw started in the battery connector, the head of the screw sheared off. Was ready to toss the phone but managed to remove the threaded part of that screw and used super glue instead of any screws on the connector and re-assembled. Phone works.

jim anderson -

My install went well. However, my kit did not include the plastic pry bar. I had to improvise but I was careful and the battery swap was easily completed.

One suggestion I have is to lay the battery on the phone and make up the connector before trying to fit the battery back inside the phone. Much much easier than having to fight to bend the battery wire/connector while screwing in those tiny screws.

Donald Mulvey -

New battery in iPhone 4s, not charging, anybody got an answer

My new battery booted up to 62% charge out of the package. Did yours boot up after the install?

Just replaced the 4s battery in our phone we use for streaming music. Battery out was mfg'd 03/2012. All went smoothly. Discharging new battery for the "conditioning part. Picked up the kit at Fry's for $20. Now to do the same for Mom's same iPhone4s. Thanks for the instructions and video.

Chris Magill -

iam change the battery to my iphone 6s plus

Akhtiar Jamali -

Was a little leary about opening up my phone, but am tired of not using the phone for fear the battery would go dead. screw driver tips that came with my kit were'nt the best, but with some others I had I got the job done. Was kind of fun and exciting! Now I'm running the new battery down to recharge it. Thanks for the great instructions! Also the video !

Nick Kehr -

This was as easy as it looked in the video.

Bill Murrin -

Repair was quick and easy as stated. Unfortunately in Australia, I cannot buy an ifixit battery, and purchased instead a cheap eBay battery, which is much better than my original, but no miracle performance. Also, it made my phone turn off and not on again, fixed by reconnecting and disconnecting again. The old beast lives on to fight another day, and the charge lasts until evening with light-moderate use.

Andrea Meehan -

I stripped one of the screws holding the battery connector. Project over.

David -

It took me about 15mins to replace the battery. I forgot to turn of the phone.

After the phone wouldn't switch on so I plugged in the charger and on it came with 38% battery.

It was easy, as the instructions were good. Thank you I had a great time doing this.

I had bought the basic tool kit and some little tools came with the Battery, but, I wish the basic tool kit came in a box, it's a real hassle keeping the little bits in safe place to use again.

Ancient warrior -

Hi, 7 months back my Father replaced Iphone 4s battery. But when update the phone, it showing error like Unknown error occurred and error cord is 29. I searched and got the solution. Replace the battery with OEM. Please let me know is it original OEM battery for iphone 4s?

Binu V -

Used the iFixit iPhone 4s battery replacement kit with all the proper tools for the job. Read the instructions, looked through people's comments, watched the video, placed my iPhone in flight mode before switching it off, and then replaced my old battery with a new one. I did not want to unnecessarily damage my only phone, so I took the time to educate myself in the little things that could go wrong and how to do it right. There were some great tips in the comments. Phone working fine and looking forward to a renewed battery life. It is a really great feeling to fix things myself, so BIG thanks to iFixit team for all the support.

Jim Neidhart -

Just replaced the battery on my Iphone 4S using the Ifixit kit and battery. Much like the previous comment I did my research, watched the videos and read the comments. It was a little tricky getting the two screw back on the pressure contact plate but with a little patience it was do able. Ifixit rocks!

German Gonzalez -

By slowly following the guide and watching the video, I had a very easy time removing and replacing the battery on the iPhone 4. I would recommend the magnetic pad or laying a strip of tape down to put your screws on and have a very uncluttered work area in case a screw gets away. As the video and instructions say, pay very close attention to the pressure plate position when you are removing the battery connector screws. Placing the connector back down is a little tricky, you need to work with the connector to push the connector in place. I put the top screw in first, then the second. Good Luck....

just_dbn3 -

Perfect., Awesome & Quick..... plus by using the ifixit deluxe tool kit everything always go's smoothly! I like my 4S phone & will only replace it once it completely dies. Thank you!

MP -

I did it! Hoorah! It only took two try's for this 72 year old grandmother to change the battery. WOW! Thanks for the video and the guide. I followed it to the 'T'! I am so happy that I don't have to get a new phone! Thanks again.

Geraldine Polansky -

The guide is very concise & complete. Although I have not attempted anything like this before, I was able to complete the battery replacement quickly & easily. The tool kit is well designed with the screwdriver heads placed in order of use. I will definitely recommend the site, guides, & materials.

Valerie Anderson -

I am 82 years young and I managed to do the task with no problems, and I have just ordered another battery for my wife’s iPhone. the tutorial was good to follow, although it is wise to read comments to avoid pitfalls. Putting the phone on “Airplane Mode” prior to booting down is a good idea, although I went one further and took out the sin card as well. After completion, booted up, in sim card, “Airplane mode” off, and hey presto, everything as was b4 I started, except for having a replacement battery, which I hope will be worthwhile.

Lino Scicluna. November 5th 2017

Emanuelino Scicluna -

I have just received the second battery to put in my wife’s 4S as stated in the above post.  Because I now had more confidence, I managed to do the task in just over 10 minutes. I cannot understand how quite a few reviewers had a few problems, mainly with the phone not working properly afterwards, without using iTunes, hard resets, etc. the trick to avoid this, which I believe is not mentioned in the tutorial, is to put the phone on “airplane mode” b4 powering down, and it may help to take the sim card out after that, which I did, reversing the order on powering up. One thing I forgot to mention is, that I prised the battery away from the adhesive pads prior to unscrewing the battery. the only thing I have to worry about now, is that the new batteries prove their worth after the obligatory treble discharge/charge.

Emanuelino Scicluna

Iphone 4S battery change, reviewed the video first , then took my time with good lighting, battery was miserable to get out but all went very well. Followed instructions and did hard boot right away, worked perfect. Could tell right away, took a long time to run the battery down to 10 % so I could recharge it to 100%. Use to die after 5 mins of video, now it stays for hours. Awesome battery, thanks and great instructions.

Bill Beharriell -

Question to those who have replaced their 4S’s battery:

can you now upgrade iOS to the current one?

Tazio Baker -

No just tried. Still limited to 9.3.5

Thomas Price -

CAREFUL!! I replaced my 4S battery about a year ago, and tried to do an IOS update this morning. The itunes stuff wiped the whole phone and essentially bricked it after showing error 29. Apple Support says I need to have an authorized repair facility put in a genuine Apple battery. On a 4S? Are they crazy? I have 7 IOS devices and will be dumping them all in favor of Samsung. Not only is Apple locking their batteries, they are actively killing old equipment under the fake mantra of shady 3rd party stuff (that’s as good or better than their original stuff).

Stephen Miller -

I got through it ok, but they need to provide better instructions on the pressure sensor. It will certainly pop off, and if it’s not reinstalled in the proper position, I imagine you’ll have trouble and never know it.

Thomas Price -

I just checked— No it won’t update beyond 9.3.5

Thomas Price -

I just completed the iPhone 4S battery replacement. The original battery was dead, so I plugged in the phone and when the battery reached 10% charge, I unplugged and went to Airplane Mode, turned off Wi-Fi and Cellular. I then started disassembly. The pentalobe screws came out easily and I pushed up on the back of the phone and pulled it off. The two screws securing the battery were stuck, but with a little more pressure I loosened both screws. That took an extra 10 minutes being careful not to strip them. I did not realize that plate was attached to the battery, but figured that out quickly when prying the battery away from the adhesive underneath. The gold/black piece popped off, but I was able to return it to it’s original position. With the new battery in I was careful not to touch the plate that attaches using the two screws with my finger. After reinstalling the back cover and screwing in the two pentalobes, I let the phone charge go from 56% to less than 10% and then charged to 100%. No problems!

Douglas Stansfield -

Ok. Swapped in the Ifixit new battery - but it started at 9%, went down to 3% and is not moving after 15 minutes of charging. Raw battery data says 3/100mah and design capacity says 100mah/1430. Seems to reboot on its own. Is this normal?

Dante Stella -

I have this exact problem with my battery, it’s at 3% permanently even while charging and will reboot itself around once every minute. I haven’t replaced my battery at any stage or tried to, but I’m starting to think it could be the small black connector linking the battery to the phone? If you’ve resolved this I would definitely appreciate knowing how you did it

Scream Like You Mean It -

I’ve completed the battery replacement and the phone has booted up. Just one thing: it’s not clear whether the pressure contact fits over or under the battery connector. I fitted it under and it seems to work. Boy do you need little fingers and sharp eyes!

Oh, I couldn’t detect any difference between the two connector screws…

harwood -

Just changed battery on sisters 4S. Thanks to the many great comments and suggestions the change went smoothly and startup was flawless.

Boy are these screws tiny..!!

Tips that helped include: using #000 Phillips, working on white towel, egg cartoon parts holder, project light, iPhone magnifier on my 6S, toothpick to hold the two clips in place until I started the small lower screw, magnetized the screw drivers and tweezers, and plastic gloves to avoid contamination.

I still managed to dump the grounding clip onto the floor at one point but luckily found it.

Without the detailed procedures, photos and comments I would never have attempted this.

Thanks to all.

Hwspls -

Ordered that Fixit Kit 2 weeks ago and just replaced the battery which took about 10 minutes, everything worked as intended but i used a magnifying tech google i use normally for soldering to place that tiny antenna pressure contact and those tiny screws back in place. Oh and i also cleaned that plate with acetone before putting the back plate back. The Device came back up without any issues with 56% Battery and i now deplete it to fully charge then.

Nirantali -

I replaced the battery, but something was not quite right. When the battery was below 10% I plugged it in to charge, at which point the phone began rebooting every couple of minutes. After about half an hour it stopped rebooting, at which point I was able to use the phone. It worked all day, although the phone showed 67% the whole time. The next day the battery was flat. I plugged in the phone to charge it, but this time the boot process only got as far as showing the Apple logo before rebooting. I tried entering DFU mode and reinstalling the software via iTunes, but this failed with error code 29. The phone is currently unusable. Suggestions much appreciated!

David Chambers -

I replaced the battery but the phone is rebooting continuously. I tried resetting it per the instructions several times but this has not helped. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Mike -

I repeated the procedure and this time it’s working! Yeah! I checked two things that might have made a difference - 1) that the four copper contacts on the battery connector were touching the four contacts on the part beneath it; and 2) that transparent plastic pull tab from on top of the battery had folded over the wrong way when I closed it the first time, possibly stopping a connection from occurring, so I flipped it back the other way to ensure that it was resting on top of the battery when I closed it this time. On a side note, the new battery is a lot better and the phone is a little faster, but still slow compared to a new phone.

Mike -

Battery wouldn’t work. Tried to restore iphone through itunes and it gave an “ERROR 21” message. Looked it up and found this error indicates battery is not compatible. Re- installed old battery and restored and phone works fine.

Thanks a lot. It was my first iPhone opening and the repair took me ca. 8 minutes only. 4S works much better now. Best Regards, Robert

Any idea were I can find the gold and black piece that acts a ground for the battery?

Hello,

I’m in France and got the repair kit to change the battery,

I was not able to unscrew the battery, because the supplied screwdrivers do not stick the screws,

They look too long and too sharp

I’m thinking about buying better screw-drivers,

thanks

Just completed the swap, a very simple task. It took less than five minutes… but thats probably because I spent twenty minutes studying the procedure and reading the comments!

Thank you iFixit peeps, and contributors.

I do wish that the video continued to show installation. Getting the battery out feels like only half the challenge. I would have liked to see some helpful techniques on how to line up the contact board so the screw holes align. I got it though!

Bridget Williams -

In addition to Steps 1 to 9 for switching out the battery, there is a Step 0, which is read all 200-plus comments posted since 2012. Some might be applicable to you, depending on the particular iPhone 4s you have.

Reassembling is NOT exactly the reverse order of disassembling because you need to snap the battery connector into place before putting the new battery into the case.

Also, the black-gold pressure contact thingy was tricky to put back into place, under the battery connector.

Lawrence Chung -

very helpful.

only recommendatio would be to enhance the description of the pressure contact when reestablishing. It is not clear where this item is to be positioned and what the orientation is .

Suggest you say it sits under the philips top screw and the pressure point gold contact points up and down to the bottom edge of the phone (or better description as you see fit) I had to examine the photo for about 15 minutes to work out where it should be.

This was the only issue. My eyesight is not great nor dexterity but I finished this first time and the phone immediatley functioned without issues thanks to the kit and your instructions.

Boris Welsh -

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ve updated that step to include what you were saying.

This was an excellent guide. Was able to replace the battery in under 10 minutes. The most difficult part was removing the battery from the adhesive.

JPagan -

Worked like a charm!

Follow the instructions. Use the proper tools. Take your time. You will have no problems.

I should have done this a long, long time ago!

Thanks!

Gerne wieder.

Very helpful & without it being so easy to follow I would have done A LOT of damage.

Thankyou 10/10.

Just followed this guide to replace a swollen battery. Removing the battery was the hardest and most nervewracking part…. I was nervous about removal… went slowly and used a credit card under the battery and along the edge to get glue to give. New one connector cable needed to be “shaped” to get it to connect. Take it slow, be careful w screws and get it done. I recovered an important sound file of an interview from the Iphone 4S I use for interviews (w a TASCAM mic). Thanks I-Fix it! Did it all outside as I was nervous about the battery… which swelled pretty dramatically when I was charging the phone (just heard cracking and went back to check on it…) Safety glasses, a bucket of sand…. can’t be too careful. The phone lives to fight another day and record a few more interviews!

Hi will these batteries you sell throw error 29 after trying to update phone ?

Kevinotten1961@yahoo.com -

Yes. Apple is a screwed up company. Do not put 3rd party batteries in their equipment until someone publishes a simple way to get around the update problems. Remember, you do NOT actually buy Apple hardware. It’s essentially a lease they can terminate at any time they want.

Does changing the battery on an older phone (4S) cause itunes and IOS to fail a restore and update? I have a 4S with ifixit battery in it that has been working well for at least a year or so. This morning I hooked it to itunes because I was running 9.3.5 on it and had heard there is a 9.3.6. Not only did itunes not update the code, it caused a complete wipe of the phone and reports “error 29”. Apple Support claims that’s what happens when you put a 3rd party battery into their phones. Seems very wrong that they would be bricking older equipment rather than just warning you about it.

Stephen Miller -

@sbmiller Thanks for bringing this up. What a nightmare! Apparently this issue dates back several years—see How to fix apple error code 29. If you have an original Apple battery available, you may be able to install it temporarily to get things working again. I’ll be looking for an opportunity to test this in more depth and see if we can come up with any other solutions.

Jeff Suovanen -

Got it all done with minimal effort (and no leftover parts!) However, the new battery does not show as charging. Now what?

A. Fix -

(Edited to add) I took it apart again and re-seated the battery connection. Note: It’s important to press it in firmly — don’t just rely on replacing the screws to create the proper pressure for connection.

Tried to charge it up again — same result, no charging. I tried a different charge cable, and it worked! Not sure what happened there as the other cable always worked before.

A. Fix -

While trying to reconnect the battery connector, I found it much easier to do it with battery sitting on the case. After tightening the connector screws, I started the left side (connector side) of the battery into its slot, carefully tucking the ribbon between the battery and pocket, and then pressed the opposite side down.

Reparaturanleitung war sehr hilfreich. Danke!

I pushed new life into this phone until I can't get used to not having to plug it into the charger.... Only so what, almost everywhere the operators turn off 3G..
