Background and Identification
The BMW X5 is a rear-wheel-drive midsize luxury SUV (sports utility vehicle) produced by BMW. BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke AG) is a German international automaker of luxury vehicles and motorcycles. BMW marketed the X5 as a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) rather than an SUV to emphasize its sportiness despite its size. The X5 was first released in 1999 for the 2000 model year and featured all-wheel-drive with either an automatic or manual transmission. In 2006, the E53 generation was replaced by the E70 generation.
Because BMW took over Land Rover in 1994, BMW engineers were able to use Range Rover technology and parts, and the E53 was highly influenced by the Range Rover. The E53 was produced when BMW owned Land Rover, so the Land Rover Range Rover L322 model and the BMW E39 5 series share many components, specifically the Off-Road Engine Management system, and the Hill Descent System, as well as engines and electronic systems. The E53’s in-car entertainment system, including the Radio Function, Navigation System, Television, and Telecommunications systems are shared between the L322 and other BMW models.
Unlike the Land Rover models, however, the X5 was designed as a sporting road car, not an off-road vehicle. The X5 is technically an all-wheel-drive vehicle, though 62-percent of the engine’s torque is applied to the rear wheels. This detail was meant to make the X5 feel more similar to BMW’s rear-wheel-drive sedans.
The BMW emblem is generally located in the center of their vehicle’s front end. The emblem includes the letters “BMW” in a black circle surrounding an inner circle made from two white and two blue triangles with the same-colored shape opposite to each other. X5 models also include the name “X5” on the rear of the vehicles.
