Background and Identification

The Toyota Corolla is a line of compact and subcompact automobiles produced by Toyota, a Japanese automaker. The Corolla line was introduced in 1966 and became the world’s best-selling car by 1974 and has been in the world’s top-selling cars since then.  The ninth generation of the Corolla (also called the E120 or E130 line) was introduced in August 2000, though exports were not typically achieved until 2001 or 2002, depending on the market.

In 2000, sedan and station wagon versions of the Corolla were released. In 2001 and 2002, a five-door hatchback and three-door hatchback were released, respectively. Toyota included edgier styling for the hatchback variants, while sedans and station wagons in Japan featured a new front-end design in 2004. The ninth-generation Corollas were designed as “global” automobiles to suit various market needs rather than as a premium compact sedan or an affordable hatchback, as previous generations were. This generation of the Corolla included front-engine, and front-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive layouts and was available with four-speed automatic, five-speed manual, five-speed Multimode Manual, or six-speed manual transmission. The E120/E130 model includes a longer 2,600 mm wheelbase when compared to the previous generation and is built on a shortened V50 series Vista platform.

Toyota vehicles in the Americas can be identified by the Toyota emblem, which depicts three overlapping ellipses. Corolla vehicles also include an emblem with the name “Corolla” in capital letters.
