Background and Identification
The Dell XPS 13 7390 is a traditional laptop with a 13-inch screen released in late 2019. It shares it’s model number with a 2-in-1 laptop released earlier in the year. You can distinguish these two models because this version (the one on this page) has a display which cannot fold around to the back of the keyboard, while the 2-in-1 version does not have this limitation. If you’re looking for the XPS 13 7390 2-in-1, you can find it on a separate iFixit page.
Internally, the XPS 13 7390 uses a 10th-generation Intel Core processor. All memory in the machine is soldered directly to the motherboard, so it cannot be upgraded from the stock configuration of 4 GB, 8 GB, or 16 GB. The storage is handled by an SSD which is attached to the motherboard via an M.2 slot. As shown in the XPS 13 7390 service manual, there is a metal shield over top of the SSD which holds it in place. You can use either a 2280 (80 mm long) drive or a 2230 (30 mm long) drive inside the laptop, but you need to correct shield to hold either in place. The battery is likewise easy to replace as it is only held in place by a few Phillips screws. The main challenge for repairing the XPS 13 7390 is removing the back cover of the laptop; it is held down with eight Torx T5 screws, which can be difficult to remove if you don’t have the right screwdriver bit.
To identify this laptop, look on the bottom for a sticker containing the model number “XPS 13 7390.” You can also find the service code/service tag in the same location and enter either on Dell’s support website for exact information on your device.
