Background and Identification
Hill-Rom, sometimes written as Hillrom, is a company that provides medical devices to caregivers around the world. Originally, the company focused on developing hospital beds and other medical devices. However, in 2019, Hill-Rom rebranded itself as Hillrom as part of their company shift from medical device development to digital health software.
Before this shift, however, Hillrom was well known for their research and development practices. In one notable instance, the company studied 29 hospital units for 500 hours to develop the Centrella bed. This bed won the 2017 Stanley Caplan User Centered Design Award. Hillrom also implemented vital sign monitoring into some versions of their beds. The 2018 version has sensors built into the bed that can check the status of a patient 100 times per minute, and notify nurses to possible issues. The 2020 version of this system can relay health information directly to a phone, allowing for better remote care.
