Background and Identification
The Huawei Mate X is an Android-based high-end foldable smartphone produced by Huawei, a Chinese technology company. The Mate X was originally scheduled to release in June 2019, but the launch was delayed until November 2019 to allow for extensive testing because of the failures reported by users of Samsung’s Galaxy Fold.
The Mate X features an 8-inch OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display that can fold outwards, resulting in a 6.6-inch main display and a 6.38-inch rear display. The display is covered by plastic and is secured by a push-button latch that, when closed, can be pressed to unfold the phone. The phone includes 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage. Its internal storage is expandable up to an additional 256 GB using Huawei’s proprietary Nano Memory. The Mate X includes two batteries split between the phone’s two halves, totaling 4500 mAh that can quick charge at 55-Watts. The batteries are non-removable, meaning the batteries’ adhesive is permanent, making repair and replacement difficult, but not necessarily impossible.
The Mate X includes a bar located on the right side of the phone that features four cameras and an LED flash on the back, the power button/fingerprint sensor on the left side, and a USB-C port on the bottom. The quad cameras include a 40-megapixel main lens, a 16-megapixel wide-angle lens, an 8-megapixel telephoto lens, and time-of-flight (TOF) sensor. Unlike Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, the Mate X comes standard with 5G enabled by Huawei’s Balong 5000 modem.
