Background and Identification
The Land Rover Discovery (also called the “Disco” in slang or popular language) is a series of medium to large premium SUVs (sport utility vehicles) produced under the Land Rover brand from Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover, a British automobile manufacturer. The first Land Rover Discovery generation was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover. The Discovery is the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover in 1948. The Discovery is largely based on the Range Rover. The Land Rover Discovery is considered somewhat influential as it is one of the first cars to market a true off-road capable family car.
The Range Rover was originally designed as an everyday four-wheel-drive car that could be used as both a utility vehicle and a family car. The Range Rover has evolved into a more expensive luxury vehicle. The Discovery was designed to fulfill the role the Range Rover was originally intended for. The Discovery was longer and higher than the Range Rover and continues to offer seats for seven occupants. Like the Range Rover, the Discovery has moved upmarket through its generations to become a luxury SUV.
Land Rover vehicles generally include the name “Land Rover” in capital letters inside of a black or green oval. Land Rover Discovery vehicles include the name “Discovery” in capital letters either across the front or the rear of the vehicle.
