Background and Identification

The Nellcor Bedside Capnograph Pulse Oximeter is a pulse oximeter made by Medtronic's Nellcor division. It is sometimes referred to by its model number, PM100N. Pulse oximeters are non-invasive devices used to monitor a patient’s oxygen saturation. The Nellcor division focuses mainly on producing pulse oximeters and oxygen monitors.

The PM100N model is a handheld pulse oximeter and capnograph used to monitor respiratory rate, end-tidal carbon dioxide, pulse rate, and oxygen saturation. This device is suitable for continuously monitoring adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients. It can be used for hospital and mobile use, as long as the machine is protected from excessive moisture. The monitor is powered either by AC power or by a rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride battery pack.

The PM100N pulse oximeter is operated using a four-key keypad. Two 7-segment LED digital displays show measured values of end-tidal carbon dioxide and saturated oxygen. An LCD graphic display shows the patient’s respiratory rate, pulse rate, and capnograph. The device can be operated in the following three modes: Standard, Homecare, and Sleep Study. The Standard mode is designed for hospital use and intra-hospital transport. The Homecare mode is designed for monitoring in the home by caregivers. The Sleep Study mode includes muted audible and visual queues for use during sleep studies.

The PM100N pulse oximeter includes the name “Nellcor” printed on the front of the device. The model number and other specifications are typically printed either on the top or the side of the device.
