Background and Identification
The Nellcor N-20, N-20P, and N-20PA are portable pulse oximeters made by Mallinckrodt’s Nellcor division. Pulse oximeters are non-invasive devices used to monitor a patient’s oxygen saturation. The Nellcor division focuses mainly on producing pulse oximeters and oxygen monitors.
The Nellcor N-20P model is identical to the N-20 model but also includes a printer. The Nellcor N-20, N-20P, and N-20PA models provide pulse rate and percent oxygen saturation measurements. A pulse amplitude indicator also shows pulse activity and patient perfusion. These pulse oximeters can be used either in spot-check mode or extended-measurement mode. In spot-check mode, the monitors take single measurements. In the extended-measurement mode, the monitors take a continuous 30 minutes of data. All three models automatically calibrate themselves when they are switched on or when a new sensor is connected.
The Nellcor N-20P and N-20PA models include printers that provide a hard copy of measurement patient parameters. The N-20PA model is constructed to be more durable to shocks, vibrations, extreme temperatures, and other conditions.
The Nellcor N-20, N-20P, and N-20PA models include grey plastic bodies. The N-20PA model features a yellow protective case. Each model includes its respective model name printed in the upper left-hand corner of the device’s front face. The name “NELLCOR” is printed in capital letters on the bottom of the yellow case.
Technical Specifications
Range:
- Saturation: 0–100%

Response:
- In spot check mode, the measurement cycle (from button press to display of data) is five valid pulses.
- In extended mode, the instrument measures for a period of up to 30 minutes and continuously displays updated SpO2 and pulse rate.
Battery:
- Type: four 1.5-V alkaline "C" cell batteries
