Background and Identification
The Nellcor Puritan Bennett NPB-190 is a pulse oximeter made by Mallinckrodt’s Nellcor division. Pulse oximeters are non-invasive devices used to monitor a patient’s oxygen saturation. The Nellcor division focuses mainly on producing pulse oximeters and oxygen monitors.
The NPB-190 is intended for continuous measurement of the patient’s pulse rate and functional oxygen saturation of arterial hemoglobin. It is suitable for use with adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients. This model is designed for use in the home and in all hospital-type facilities. When powered by its internal battery, this monitor can also be used during intra-hospital transport.
Digital displays indicate the patient’s oxygen saturation and pulse rate. A 10-segment LED bar shows the patient’s pulse amplitude. Alarms are produced when a variable moves outside the operator-defined limits. The operator can adjust high and low alarm limits for pulse rate and oxygen saturation.
The NPB-190 pulse oximeter includes the name “NELLCOR PURITAN BENNETT” printed in capital letters above the device’s display. The model number, ‘NPB-190,’ is also printed above the monitor’s display. This model operates either on AC power or on a rechargeable internal battery.
For troubleshooting, disassembly, and repair information, see the Nellcor Puritan Bennett NPB-190 Service Manual. Common problems are typically categorized into power, buttons, display/alarms, operational performance, and serial port.
