Background and Identification

The Nellcor Puritan Bennett NPB-40 is a handheld pulse oximeter made by Mallinckrodt’s Nellcor division. Pulse oximeters are non-invasive devices used to monitor a patient’s oxygen saturation. The Nellcor division focuses mainly on producing pulse oximeters and oxygen monitors.

The NPB-40 is designed to take spot-check measurements of the functional oxygen saturation of arterial hemoglobin and pulse rate. It is suitable for use with adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients. If protected from direct rainfall and excessive moisture, the NPB-40 model can be used in mobile environments.

The NPB-40 monitor is powered by four AA-size alkaline batteries. The monitor displays a low battery indication when the batteries need to be replaced. With four new batteries, the monitor can run up to 19 hours. Users can print stored data to a Hewlett-Packard HP82240B printer. This printer is sold by Nellcor Puritan Bennett.

Users can operate the NPB-40 pulse oximeter using a four-key keypad and an LCD display on the device’s front panel. The LCD display shows the saturated oxygen level, pulse rate, and pulse amplitude.

For troubleshooting and repair information, see the Nellcor Puritan Bennett NPB-40 Service Manual. Aside from the batteries, this model has five replaceable components, the case bottom, the CPU PCB, the LCB PCB, the battery compartment door, and the case top with the front panel keypad.
