Background and Identification
The Nikon corporation has more than 100 years of experience in optics and imaging products. They produce binoculars, microscopes, and spotting scopes in addition to its camera lenses and cameras. Nikon introduced its first digital camera, a device used to record and store digital images, in 1983 and introduced the Coolpix 5400 in 2003. The Nikon Coolpix 5400 is a compact digital camera, the fourth model in the 5000 series. This camera is noted by its 5.1 megapixels, 4x optical zoom, and 4x digital zoom. The Coolpix 5400 has both a viewfinder and a rear LCD swivel monitor for ease of use. It is powered by a Nikon EN-EL1 Lithium-Ion re-chargeable battery and comes with a charging cord. Memory card storage options include CompactFlash Card Type I/II and 512MB/1GB Microdrive. It is identified by the serial number, 3751023, located on the bottom of the camera body. This camera has been discontinued by Nikon.
This camera is a classic ‘point-and-shoot’ device, although it has many extra functions to achieve a high-quality image for the user. A user determines what scene to capture, then uses either the viewfinder or LCD monitor to frame the area or object to be photographed. Once framed, the shutter-release button is pressed, and the image is captured and saved to the memory card. Images can be reviewed on the monitor or downloaded to a computer. The settings can be manipulated to achieve desired results.
The camera has black housing, a digital zoom lens with lens cover, built-in speedlight flash, built-in microphone, right-hand grip with shutter-release button, camera strap, and external rear swivel LCD monitor. The mode dial and command dial are located on the top of the housing, and the settings menu is controlled by the multi-selector on the rear of the housing. The DC-in connector and memory card slot are located on the right-hand side, the battery chamber is located on the bottom, and the USB connector and speaker are located on the left-hand side of the housing. The battery life is approximately 110 minutes when using the monitor.
