Background and Identification
The Nonin 8500 Series is a line of pulse oximeters manufactured by Nonin Medical. Pulse oximeters are non-invasive devices used to monitor a patient’s oxygen saturation. Nonin Medical designs and manufactures pulse oximeters, regional oximeters, and capnographs for patient monitoring.
The Nonin 8500 Series includes handheld pulse oximeters designed to measure the patient’s pulse rate and functional oxygen saturation of arterial hemoglobin. It is suitable for use with adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients. These models can be used in hospital, home, ambulatory, and emergency medical service (EMS) environments. The 8500 and 8500M models are designed for spot-checking and continuous monitoring.
The Nonin 8500 Series displays numeric values for pulse rate and blood oxygen saturation on light-emitting diode (LED) digital displays. The pulse quality LED blinks with each detected pulse. The pulse quality signals are rated as ‘good,’ ‘marginal,’ or ‘inadequate’ and are indicated by the pulse quality indicator blinking green, yellow, or red, respectively. These pulse oximeters can operate for up to 100 hours before the alkaline batteries require replacement. They can be used with a wide range of Nonin pulse oximeter sensors. The 8500M “memory” version features up to 18 hours of data storage.
The Nonin 8500 and 8500M pulse oximeters include the name “NONIN” printed in white capital letters at the top of the device’s front face.
