Background and Identification
The Nonin PalmSat 2500 is a handheld pulse oximeter manufactured by Nonin Medical. Pulse oximeters are non-invasive devices used to monitor a patient’s oxygen saturation. Nonin Medical designs and manufactures pulse oximeters, regional oximeters, and capnographs for patient monitoring.
The Nonin PalmSat 2500 assesses the patient’s pulse rate and functional oxygen saturation of arterial hemoglobin. According to the manufacturer, there are no adjustable parts in this model that would require calibration. The PalmSat is compatible with all Nonin-branded pulse oximeter sensors, except the Nonin fiber-optic pulse oximeter sensors. Disposable sensors are designed for single-patient use, while reusable sensors are designed for multiple-patient use. This pulse oximeter features amber and red LED lights to indicate medium- or high-priority alarms.
The PalmSat 2500 model can be powered either by four AA batteries, rechargeable batteries, or AC power (when used with a charging stand). On battery power, the 2500 model can run up to 80 hours. The device provides up to 72 hours of onboard data storage.
Pulse oximeter performance can be degraded by conditions such as excessive ambient light, excessive motion, moisture in the sensor, improperly attached sensors, poor pulse quality, anemia or low hemoglobin concentrations, and sensor not at heart level.
The Nonin PalmSat 2500 includes the name “NONIN” debossed in the monitor’s grey plastic casing. The graphical display presents the patient’s pulse rate in beats per minute and oxygen saturation as a percentage.
