Background and Identification

The Novametrix Model 7300 is a cardiac output monitor manufactured by Novametrix Medical Systems. It is also known as the NICO model 7300. Novametrix was a producer of airway pressure monitors, transcutaneous blood gas monitors, pulse oximeters, capnographs, respiratory mechanics monitors, and volumetric carbon dioxide monitors. Novametrix is now owned by Philips Respironics, a medical device conglomerate.

The NICO model 7300 monitor is designed to measure cardiac output based on changes in respiratory carbon dioxide concentration. Cardiac output measurements are completed by interpreting data collected by a variety of sensors that measure carbon dioxide concentration, airway pressure, and flow rate. These measurements are combined to calculate the patient’s carbon dioxide elimination. Cardiac output is then calculated using Fick partial rebreathing. A rebreathing cardiac output measurement is made every three minutes with a rebreathing rate of 50 seconds.

The 7300 model can be used with mechanically ventilated patients in intensive care, emergency departments, or the operating room. It is powered by an internal lead-acid gel-cell battery with an advertised run time of 45 minutes on a full charge. The battery takes approximately 12 hours to fully recharge.

The NICO 7300 includes the name “NOVAMETRIX MEDICAL SYSTEMS INC.” printed in capital letters near the bottom right-hand corner of the monitor’s front face. The name “NICO” is printed in capital block letters near the upper right-hand corner of the model’s front face. A digital display presents alerts, trend information, and cardiac output measurements.
