Background and Identification
The Puritan-Bennett Companion 492a and 590 are oxygen concentrators sold by Puritan-Bennett. Puritan-Bennett is a producer of respiratory products and was initially a medical gas supplier. An oxygen concentrator is a medical or industrial device that concentrates the oxygen from either ambient air or another gas supply. Oxygen concentrators selectively remove nitrogen and other gases from the air to provide an oxygen-enriched stream.
The Companion Liquid Oxygen System stores and delivers concentrated oxygen at a rate prescribed by the user. The Companion 492a and 590 models provide supplemental oxygen to patients at high concentrations. These oxygen concentrators are sold with a flowmeter calibrated in 0.25-liter increments. The 492a model has a maximum flow rate of 4 liters per minute. The 590 model produces a maximum flow rate of 5 liters per minute.
The Puritan-Bennett Companion models 492a and 590 include four caster wheels for maneuverability and a handle for transportation. Both models feature replaceable filters that can be removed without disassembling the entire unit. The oxygen concentrators also include an hour meter, a battery, and a circuit breaker.
The Companion 492a and 590 models are visually similar. Both include white plastic housing. The model name is printed on the front face of the device on a black or grey sticker.
