Background and Identification

Sony Bravia 40” LCD televisions are made by Sony but are branded Bravia which is a subsidiary of Sony Corporation, a Japanese multinational conglomerate. Bravia stands for “Best Resolution Audio Visual Integrated Architecture”. Since 2005, all Sony high definition LCD televisions have carried the Bravia brand in North America. Prior to this, Sony carried the WEGA brand on their LCD televisions.

Sony Bravia 40” televisions all share a 40-inch LCD (liquid-crystal display). A liquid-crystal display uses light-modulating properties of liquid crystals in combination with polarizers to produce images. In contrast, LED (light-emitting diode) displays consist of semiconductor light sources that emit light when exposed to current. The components for Sony Bravia LCD TVs depend on the model but in general, the LCD panels are made by Sony Corporation. Since 2010, for mid-range and budget models, the 8th generation SPVA panel was used but for the high end televisions like those in the LX, NX and HX series the 10th generation Sony Bravia ASV panel was used.

The Sony Bravia LCD TV’s can be updated. Using a USB or memory stick, the 2006-2007 TV’s may be updated and later models have software updates via the internet.

In 2014 CNET reviewed the KDL-40W605, a mid-range Sony Bravia LCD 40”. They reported good picture quality at a reasonable price but they criticized the lack of 3D support and advanced motion processing.
