Background and Identification

The Sony Xperia M5 is a water- and dust-resistant Android smartphone produced by Sony and released in August 2015. The Xperia M5 is the successor to the Xperia M4 Aqua and the predecessor of the Sony Xperia X. The Xperia M5 was marketed as a “super mid-range” smartphone. The M5 includes model numbers E5603, E5606, and E5653 and was released in black, white, and gold body colors.

The Sony Xperia M5 features a scratch-resistant 5.0-inch liquid-crystal display with a resolution of 1080 by 1920 pixels. The phone includes 16 GB of internal storage and 3 GB of RAM, as well as a dedicated microSDXC slot for expanding the phone’s internal storage up to 200 GB. The M5 features a 21.2-megapixel main camera and a 13-megapixel selfie camera. It uses hybrid autofocus that utilizes phase detection and contrast detection that is designed to focus on the desired object within 0.25 seconds. The phone includes a 2600 mAh non-removable battery, meaning the battery’s adhesive is permanent, making repair and replacement more difficult, but not necessarily impossible. The M5 is IP68 certified, meaning the phone can withstand being submerged in up to 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes.

The Xperia M5 occasionally suffers from automatic shutoff and cannot be restarted or turned on unless connected to a power source with a USB cable. Sony confirmed that most of their first batch of the M5 were faulty and customers with an affected phone can have the battery replaced at a Sony Service Center.
