Background and Identification
The Back-UPS RS 1000 is an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) manufactured by APC. In the event of a power outage, the device can provide up to 600 Watts of power to any device connected to one of the six grounded power sockets on the back. It has two more sockets which are not connected to the battery backup, but are still on a surge protected circuit. The RS 1000 is made of white (or beige after some exposure to sunlight) plastic. It has a red APC logo on the front along with the power button and status indicator lights.
The RS 1000 can communicate with a computer via a USB to RJ-45 (the jack used for Ethernet) cord. APC provides one of these adapters with a new unit when it is sold. The device also includes two more Ethernet ports (limited to 100 Gbit/s) which you can use to electrically isolate your computer and stop power surges (e.g. from a lightning strike) from traveling through a network cable and frying your computer. These ports are only available on the RS 1000 and not any of its sibling products like the XS 1000.
To identify your UPS, look for a sticker containing the model number located on the back or bottom of the device. Once the batteries in your model go bad, you can replace them with a replacement battery cartridge model #32, found here on the APC website.
