    • Finally!!! The iPad has come back to iFixit! And this time, it has a 2 at the end of its name, hence the iPad 2!

    • After a much awaited debut, the iPad 2 is expected to fill in the gaps left by the first generation iPad.

    • Tech Specs:

    • 1 GHz Apple A5 dual-core processor

    • 512 MB of LPDDR2 RAM

    • 16/32/64 GB internal storage capacity

    • 9.7" LED-backlit glossy Multi-Touch display with IPS technology (1024 x 768)

    • HD (720p) Rear-facing camera + VGA Front-facing camera

I have been debating this fix on my own. but the risks of making it worse.

    • A thickness comparison. You can definitely see the tapered edge of the iPad 2 when it's side-by-side to the old version.

    • Our guess is there are no more clips holding the front panel in place -- now it's glued à la 4th Gen iPod Touch.

    • With the iPad's new tapered-edge form factor, big iPod Touch jokes are sure to run wild.

    • Apple summarized the changes in 6 short phrases. "Thinner. Lighter. Faster. FaceTime. Smart Covers. 10-hour battery."

    • The 10-hour battery life is the same as the original iPad, but it's impressive considering the device is also thinner, lighter and faster.

  3. dxOvPZVPU1vTMxVe
    • A new model number graces the iPad 2: A1395. Thank you, Apple! That's much nicer of you than the twenty-six billion iterations of MacBook Pros you called model A1286.

    • Apparently, the iPad 2 is not as 1337 as the original iPad.

    • The sole speaker grate can be found on the bottom-left of the back of the iPad 2. We're not fans of mono, but stereo will have to wait until iPad 3.

    • Without further ado, let's begin tearing this iPad 2 apart!

    • Unlike the original iPad, it looks like we need the help of a handy dandy heat gun to remove the front panel.

    • With the adhesive loosened after a healthy dose of heat, we go to work on prying up the front panel with a plastic opening tool.

NOW I see why my white iPad 2's front plate is kind of loose after leaving it in a hot, sunny car. Stupid glue.

    Quinn Vinlove -

What else can I use to open the iPad 2? A Hair Dryer? I need to get i opened, but I can't get a heat gun in this country -_-.

    Karan Varindani -

I have a hot air rework station, could I use it on a low temperature setting? How hot is too hot? Like 200° Celsius? Less?

    trevorsklar -

  5. mH4QIwCSrxTHGNFk
    • And just like that, it's open. No clips, just tons of glue.

    • As much as we hated trying to remove the clips in the original iPad, this much adhesive is even more of a pain. Be ready to crack your front panel if you dare open it! We'll be investigating the best way to get inside over the next few weeks.

When putting it together, did you use new glue or is it reusable?

    Mohammed -

No one managed to replace the screen. Hence no reply to that question. I have the glass here to do the job but since no one has managed it so far and there is no indication how the new glass is retained in place, I will just cover the cracked missing pieces of glass with gaffer tape and show off how badly made the iPads are made.

    kenneth keen -

Can you please let me know if there is a plastic frame between touch screen and LCD like in IPAD 1 ?

    Thank you

    majoul -

I personally found it easier to use 4 plastic pry tools. Once you get the first one in, heat up that area so that a second one can be inserted. Then start twisting the tool slowly, then slid it to the right heating as you go and adding a new tool in the middle of each side. Works like a charm and no broken screen.

    • A few screws here and there hold down the LCD screen. Not a problem for the iFixit's 54 piece bit driver kit.

    • Lifting off the LCD exposes the iPad 2's battery; A 3.8V, 25 Watt-hour unit. That's just a hair more than the original iPad's 24.8 Watt-hours, so any improved battery performance can be attributed to software and other hardware improvements.

    • Also listed on the battery is a capacity of 6930 mAh, which may appear to contradict the already mentioned 25Wh at 3.8V ((25Wh/3.8V)*1000=6579 mAh), but 3.8V is the listed nominal voltage, not the average voltage. The average voltage of the battery over a full charge/discharge is closer to 3.6V leading to a more accurate calculation ((25Wh/3.6V)*1000=6944 mAh).

    • After disconnecting its cable, the display can be removed from the iPad 2.

3.6V = nominal rating of Li-Ion cell and would agree with 25W/6930 mAH battery notation. Actual cell voltage can vary from 4.2 V to 2.6V, though cut off may be around 3 V. Agree 3.8 V stamp doesn't fit.

    • Disconnecting the touchscreen ribbon cable from its socket on the logic board.

    • An Apple device just wouldn't be complete without Multi-Touch. No surprise there.

    • Removing the camera/volume control daughterboard connector from the logic board.

    • After popping off a few EMI shields, we get a good look at the ICs on the logic board. They include:

    • Broadcom BCM5973KFBGH Microcontroller used for touchscreen

    • Broadcom BCM5974 CKFBGH capacitative touchscreen controller

    • This is the same combination as the original iPad - nothing new here!

    • Interestingly, the Wi-Fi board is attached to the logic board under one of the EMI shields. It can be easily pried off its socket.

  12. maqDgIMmDbLD2Pvh
    • The Wi-Fi board; powered by another Broadcom chip, a BCM43291HKUBC. Broadcom has made this Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/FM tuner combo chip a ubiquitous part for smartphones - lots of design wins.

    • This is the same part Apple used in both the first iPad and the iPhone 4.

This step should be located after step 12.

This step comes too early. It should be located after step 12.

    • Notable chips found on the logic board (click here for mega size):

    • Apple 1GHz A5 dual-core Processor with a 200MHz bus and 512 MB of Samsung manufactured RAM.

    • Toshiba TH58NVG7D2FLA89 16GB NAND Flash

    • Apple 343S0542 - this looks like the Dialog Semi power management chip found in last year's iPad - all of those inductors and capacitors surrounding it are a clue.

    • Texas Instruments CD3240B0 11AZ4JT G1 touchscreen line driver, working with the Broadcom BCM5973 and BCM5974 chips shown above.

    • S6T2MLC N33C50V Power Management IC

    • The A5 processor has manufacture dates of late January and mid-February 2011. Production was clearly ramping up through the last minute. It looks like the A5 processor is the APL0498, replacing the A4/APL0398 seen in the iPad 1 and iPhones.

    • Apple-branded 338S0940 A0BZ1101 SGP. This looks like the Cirrus audio codec Chipworks found in the Verizon iPhone, but they'll have to get it off the board to make sure.

the code written on the A5 identifies the ram

    K3PE4E400B - XGC1

    K3: Samsung Mobile DRAM Stac

    P: MDDR2-P(※S4)+MDDR2-P(※S4)

    matteolevel -

What camera was used to take the mega size image?

    Philipp Normann -

It seems, there is another version of Apple A5 found in iPad 2:

    - Apple PN is 339S0137 (instead of 339S0130 above)

    - DRAM PN is Elpida B4064B2PF-8D-F (instead of Samsung K3PE4E400B-XGC1 above)

    • Prying up the 3.8V 25 Watt-hour Li-Ion Polymer battery from the back case.

    • The iPad 2 uses three massive Li-Ion cells to provide an impressive 10-hours of battery life.

There were 2 (probably thicker) cells in the Ipad 1. And there was some free space in the case. Apple probably managed to use that free space by putting in 3 thinner battery cells and thereby securing the same battery life for the device.

    Ahmet -

One obvious question... how much does the battery weigh? In thinking about how Apple might reduce weight in future iPads, the weights of the battery, aluminum frame and front display all seem worth seeing. You supplied this on the original iPad teardown...

Any idea who makes the sensor? Omnivision?

    emmylou323 -

Any ideas how feasible it might be to replace this camera with the one meant to go in an iPhone4? I bet the software would have a decent chance of recognizing it if the physical size and electrical connections matched. I'd love to mod my iPad2 with an upgraded camera, but ideally I'd like to know if it'd have any chance of working before I potentially destroy it.

    Paul Jacobs -

That's why the debate on getting the original iPad instead. Not paying extra for what you don't want.

    DarkReaper -

Seriously, please, someone from ifixit - are the connections and physical shape the same between the iPhone4 and iPad2 rear cameras? Could they be swapped if you assume there are no software issues?

    Paul Jacobs -

Hi there. It seems that the connectors between the iPhone 4 (on the left) and iPad 2 (on the right) rear-facing cameras are different. http://bit.ly/fyFx9M

    • On this little board the AGD8 2103 gyroscope rears its pretty little head, next door to the LIS331DLH accelerometer, both by STMicroelectronics.

That wasn't as easy as it looks. The board is glued to the side of the case I had to hit it with some heat to get it to come out. Also don't forget to remove the front camera housing.

    gcroley -

Didn't show it's a step. Before removing that all the way make sure to remove the black tape and disconnect the power volume flex or you might end up tearing it and have to buy a new one like I did.

i would also like to know more about the magnets and about the solution they use to auto wake up / sleep the iPad (it does not uses the camera as it need to open only the first third of the cover, but the camera stays hidden

    ppc -

There is a proximity sensor in the iPad, similar to the one used in the iPhone. When the cover is on, the sensor is covered – when it's remove the sensor is revealed and the device wakes up.

It's just like how an iPhone or most other smartphones turn off the screen during calls when you bring the device up to your face.

    Sgt Pepper -

One interesting thing about the magnets / smart cover is that if you try to attach it to the right side of the device instead of the left where it belongs, it puts the iPad to sleep as soon as you put them together within a quarter inch or so. So I bet magnetic polarity is involved there.

    Paul Jacobs -

BlackBerries also have this feature in their cases, it's a form of Proximity sensor, I would agree. And you should be able to cut that piece up and be able to sleep/wake the iPad with just that piece, for the fun of it. Just that the smart covers are more or less useless, it seems.

    • iPad 2 Repairability Score: 2 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair)

    • The LCD is really easy to remove once the front panel is gone.

    • Only standard Phillips screws were used -- no Pentalobular or Tri-Wing funny-business.

    • The front panel is now glued to the rest of the device, greatly increasing the chances of cracking the glass when trying to remove it.

    • The LCD has foam sticky tape adhering it to the front panel, increasing chances of it being shattered during disassembly.

    • The battery is very securely stuck down to rear case, and you have to remove the logic board to remove it.

    • You can't access the front panel's connector until you remove the LCD.

    • Historical note: We initially awarded the iPad 2 a 4 out of 10, but in the process of writing our repair manual realized that it was far more difficult to repair than originally suspected.

Really Apple? All these items wont cost you more than $200 and your selling it for $599. Thats just out right crazy.

kuku -

@kuku - I assume your job pays you more than the minimum required to stay alive? That's crazy!

Nick -

if you don't like apple's rather large profit margins, either don't buy apple or wait a couple years(aka now) and snag older apple tech for cheap once the hype wears down. You can get an ipad 2 nowadays for under 125 which is about right for all the hardware inside it.

Ethan Chow -

Yes, because the money they pay for the parts is clearly the only cost involved in the entire manufacturing, distribution and marketing process.

Mike M -

you forgot the SW cost, that is a big part of iPad, and the design/development cost

fabrica64 -

Where are the magnets that the smart cover attaches to?

tarekrached -

I was gonna ask about the Magnets too. How much total weight do they add, etc.?

Russ -

what about a weight comparison (glass, LCD, case...) between ipad1 and ipad2?

I would like to know some more info: glass thickness, LCD manufacturer, etc...

Thanks

matteolevel -

Please show the magnets and the sensor the smart covers use. Is there any more information on the camera's? Are they the exact same used in the ipod Touch?

This is a gorgeous and brilliant design.

It is simple and elegant.

It is easily worth what Apple is charging.

It is so funny that other companies charge far more for their tablets.

James Katt -

A tiny perfect 1 caret diamond is far more expensive than this iPad.

This iPad is a gorgeous bargain.

James Katt -

What screwdriver is it that is being used in the teardown? I've been looking for something similar

adaengst -

It's the driver from our 54-piece screwdriver set. A definite favorite around the office for its solid feel.

David Hodson -

The iPad 2 is as gorgeous work of art. It provides so much pleasure and enjoyment. Its design is so simple and elegant. It is amazing.

Its price is also so cheap for what it does. In comparison, a tiny rock called a 1 caret diamond (VS2, clarity D) costs at least $5000. And that rock doesn't provide as much pleasure, capability and joy as the iPad does.

James Katt -

It's not a piece of rock, a diamond is a rare-occurring piece of rare graphite. Everything rare and unsubstitutable or indispensable, comes with a high price. Unlike iPhones or practically any other gadget out there, you just need them to work their machines and sacrifice some of the more abundant materials on our Earth.

DarkReaper -

I'm surprised that the speakers are being criticized in this teardown. Contrarily, it seems that Apple spent a lot of time designing the new iPad 2 speakers because their sound quality far outmatches that of the iPad 1. The wholesome qualities of it just blew me away when my brother and I compared his iPads. And we though the iPad 1 had great speakers! We were wrong compared to this new iPad! :)

Did the backlight bleed issue disapear after the digitiser was removed?

would be an idea to fire it up without.

Im 100% sure that sponge gasket around the LCD panel is putting pressure on the edges making the screen bleed!
