Hello there! My name is MD Yeasin Rahman Khan. I am an international student from Bangladesh, pursuing my undergrad, majoring in Information Technology.
My curiosity with rebuilding and repair started off very young in my life. One of my obsessions are cars and motorbikes. My dream is to restore my own project car one day. Every time my toy car or any toy broke, I used to take it apart and try to repair it myself. However, most time it did not work but I have had my fair share of success in fixing the toys.
My interest really peaked during the end of my high school, by saving my dads’ old scooter from getting scrapped. This project took me about a year to finish. This was the first time I had first-hand experience with restoring, so I really did not know what to expect. It was a 1962 Vespa 150 VBB. Given the fact that it was from the 1960s I knew it would be very difficult to find replacement parts and a lot of trial and error to bring it back to running condition. Surprisingly, essential components such as, the frame and the engine block survived after all the time it spent in our shed. Other then that, the side panels, the front fender and all the chrome parts were rusted.
As I have mentioned before I had zero experience on restoring a scooter before this. I needed to talk to someone with the right knowledge and there weren’t any local mechanics who worked on such vehicles. Luckily, after much research I did find a machinic who specializes on these scooters. We had to take the whole scooter apart, rebuilt the rusted parts from scratch, a clean sweep of the engine block and rebuild the whole thing from the ground up. Given the age of the scooter, fixing the transmission was the biggest obstacle. To this day the transmission sometimes acts up, shifting the gears is not smooth all the time and occasionally the clutch lever gets very stiff when trying to shift to the forth gear.
At the end, I am really proud of the restoration. The experience taught me the value of things and how we can’t treat things for granted. Throughout this journey it made me realize that the act of repairing is an essential skill that most people should learn. Even if people can’t repair but have access to affordable repair services. Corporations these days should design their products with a longer life time and easy and affordable access to service centre.
