Technical Writer

Greetings fellow fixers, my name is Alex Diaz-Kokaisl (pronounced Dee-az Coke Hazel), and I am a Technical Writer for iFixit. I create repair guides to be published on iFixit.com.

Education

I graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 2021 with a BA in English. Notably, my senior project was working as a lead editor on my university’s literary journal, Byzantium. The journal has been ongoing since 1991, and my unique contribution was developing a network of past editors to help support the project financially and didactically. We were the first team to have the entire editing/publishing process be impacted by COVID-19, so there was a need for some innovation.

Experience

During college, I worked for Cal Poly’s Writing and Learning Center as a Writing Tutor, much to the chagrin of any students who disliked constructive criticism. I also was a Copy Editor Intern for the Youth in Politics journal, which was a position that allowed me to use my writing skills outside of academia.

On the tech/engineering side of my life, I have a history of repair and construction thanks to my father exposing me and my brother to power tools and Home Depot. One of my fondest childhood memories is building a computer with my father and having to apply thermal paste before installing an i7; I didn’t know what I was doing, but it turns out that I knew exactly what I was doing because I still have that computer today.

Hobbies

I like reading. Shocker.

Favorite fiction writer: Robert A. Heinlein

Favorite non-fiction writer: Thomas Sowell

I am also an avid weightlifter, hence the Ronnie Coleman reference in my profile summary. I refuse to upload lifting photos because I am not vain enough to do so.

I’ll also include here that I have been playing/collecting Magic: The Gathering for the past 18 years, and, like any skill or passion you think you have mastered, oftentimes you have only just begun.
