Disconnecting this cable was particularly difficult for me. I found that this was easiest when I had already removed the battery. The technique that worked for me was pushing on either side in turn to slowly dislodge it, rather than using the notch on top of the connector.

    Miguel Guthridge -

I skipped this step and connected the replacement battery to the existing cable. Thanks Miguel for getting me started in that direction by removing the battery first.

Mine was also stubborn. Top notch failed. Gripping sides of plug kept slipping off. Finally had pull on plug wires [Don't normally recommend, but replacing plug w/ new battery] to rock it loose.

I found these comments AFTER I forced it out.

    Thanks to all contributors!

DON'T DAMAGE PLUG or POWER WIRES.

Most replacement batteries do NOT come with it. (sold separately)

It seems there are issues with replacement Dell batteries causing the touchpad to behave erratically (https://www.dell.com/community/XPS/xps-1...), with impaired action of the left 'mouse button' on the pad, and the left button either clicking randomly or appearing to be held down. Have returned a (so-called) compatible 3rd party battery for my XPS15 9500 and now going to try an original Dell replacement. The problem seems to be battery thickness, i.e. not giving the touchpad room to correctly operate.

Interesting point. I just removed my original Dell battery b/c the cells swelled and pushed the bottom of the touchpad up causing the corners to no longer left/right click. Also, some keys stopped working. Waiting on my replacement "compatible" battery to arrive.

It should also be noted that most replacement batteries don't come with the battery connection cable, so you need to remove it from the existing battery and install it on the replacement. The cable seems to come off with a slight pull (once unstuck and the securing tape next to the connector is lifted), and inserts onto the new battery by just pushing it down onto the connector.

Actually I think this may the best way to install the battery. I could easily see damaging the motherboard trying to disconnect the cable from the motherboard.

Seconding for the missing battery connection cable; there are no instructions for moving this from the old battery to the new, and it doesn't come with one. Caveat Emptor!

my XPS 15 9500 does not recognize the new battery

The touchpad doesn't work after installing this battery. I can move the cursor around, but clicking is not possible. So it's better to get an original Dell battery.

My XPS 9500 does not recognize the new battery. Not happy

FWIIW: Dell doesn't ship the batteries with the stupid cable either. You have to order it separately and it isn't clearly available on their website. We had a batter replaced via OEM via Dell via our IT Consultant and they even fell into this trap. Waited another 3 weeks to get the cable from Dell.

Very disappointed in this fix. To start, I thought I had purchased a genuine Dell replacement battery, but it's clearly aftermarket. I purchase here because I like to purchase genuine parts and support the fixit community in general, but I can find less expensive aftermarket parts elsewhere.

Then the guide was incomplete as others have mentioned, omitting any mention of the bottom battery connector. There was also a missed opportunity to show how to remove and clean the fans and heat pipe fins. By the time you are ready for a replacement battery, you can be fairy certain a basic internal cleaning is in order as well.

I've been a customer for many years, but this was the first time that I was actually unhappy with my experience. Hopefully an anomaly.

Is there a way to fix the trackpad problem when updating to the new battery?

Bill T -

I did not encounter a trackpad problem before or after replacing mine, but from what I’ve read and experienced - using a battery purchased from Dell should work best. My new battery from Dell worked fine for me.

That said, if I was on a very tight budget I would consider trying one from iFixit - they have good customer service and will replace or refund if it doesn’t work properly.

I’ve seen many laptop batteries begin to swell as they get old, that may be causing a trackpad issue.

Since my battery replacement was on a work laptop, I went with genuine Dell to ensure the best results (and convinced my manager to purchase it).
