1985-1988 Volvo 740 Troubleshooting
Background and Identification
The Volvo 700 series is a range of executive cars produced by Volvo Cars, a Swedish automobile manufacturer, from 1982 to 1992. The 700 series was introduced in 1982 with the luxury model 760, followed in 1984 by the lower-priced 740. Beginning in the 1990s, the 700 series was gradually replaced by the 900 series. The most obvious differences between the 700 and 900 series include more rounded corners on the body of 900 series cars and a better-appointed interior. The 700 series was discontinued in late 1992 when the last 740s were produced, though these 740s were considered to be part of the 1993 model year.
The 740 was introduced in early 1984 (for the 1985 model year in the U.S. and Australia). The 740 was the lower-end version of the original 760 and was sold as a mid-size car that offered more style, performance, and luxury than the 200 series vehicles. The ‘4’ in the middle of the Volvo model name at first signified a four-cylinder engine, but by the time the 740 was introduced, it simply meant less luxurious equipment since four- and six-cylinder engines were fitted across both series. The 740 was available as a four-door sedan (sometimes called the 744) and a five-door station wagon (known as the 745). The wagon was aimed at North American markets and went on sale in Europe in the fall of 1985.
Volvo vehicles can be identified by the Volvo emblem, which portrays the name “Volvo” in all capital letters inside a circle with an arrow pointing to the Northwest.
