Background and Identification
BLU Products is a mobile-phone designer and manufacturer founded in 2009 in Florida, United States, by Samuel Ohev-Zion. The acronym BLU stands for ‘Bold Like Us.’ BLU produces unlocked Android smartphones and prepaid, no-contract devices. The company markets its phones as affordable Android devices.
BLU Products was one of the first Latin-owner mobile phone manufacturers marketed towards a Latin population. BLU phones are popular in Central America, Latin America, the United States, and the Caribbean. In 2009, BLU Products sold 70,000 units. In 2010, the brand sold over four million phones and became the leading mobile phone brand in Latin America. As of 2020, BLU had sold over 60 million devices worldwide.
BLU Products faced several privacy issues between 2016 and 2018. In 2016, users discovered that some pre-loaded applications on BLU phones were secretly sending user data to Chinese servers. In 2017, Amazon responded to concerns over data collection and privacy concerns by suspending the sale of BLU phones for one week. Also in 2017, a flawed system update locked some users out of their BLU Life One X2 smartphones. It took BLU nearly a week to find a fix to the issue and inform users on how to reaccess their phones.
BLU smartphones can be identified by the name “BLU” in capital letters on the rear of the phones, generally in the center. The BLU name sometimes also appears on the top front bezels of its smartphones.
