Background

Honor is a Chinese mobile brand majority owned by a state-owned enterprise controlled by the municipal government of Shenzhen. Honor was formerly a sub-brand of and owned by Huawei Technologies and was acquired by Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology Co. Ltd in November 2020. Since then, Honor has sold smartphones, tablets, wearables and laptops only under the name Honor while the name before was Huawei Honor.

Honor was originally founded in 2013 as a subsidiary of Huawei to compete in the mid-range smartphone market both in China and globally. After US sanctions restricted the sale of American hardware to Huawei Technologies, Honor was sold to ensure the survival of both companies.

Identification

Honor phones can be identified by the Honor branding on the bottom of the back cover or the rear glass. However older Honor phones often have their branding on the bottom of the screen.

Huawei Honor and Honor devices can be distinguished by the brand logo. All devices manufactured between 2013 and 2018 carry the old Honor logo and are therefore Huawei Honor devices. Devices from 2018 and newer carry the new Honor logo. To determine whether a device with the new branding was still sold under Huawei Honor, you have to check the small text under the logo or the serial number. Alternatively, it can also be determined by the branding of the installed battery. Huawei batteries can be found in Huawei Honor devices, while the batteries in devices from 2020 and newer are branded by Honor.
