Background and Identification

The Kia Rio is a subcompact car produced by Kia Motors, a South Korean manufacturer since 1999. The Kia Rio replaced the first-generation Kia Pride, which was a rebadged version of the Ford Fiesta, and the Kia Avella, a subcompact car sold as a Ford in some markets. A second-generation Rio was introduced in 2005 in Europe and 2006 in North America. The second-generation Rio shares its platform with the Hyundai Accent, a subcompact car manufactured by Kia’s sister Hyundai Motor Company.

The Kia Rio has been produced as a three-door hatchback (2011-2017), a five-door hatchback, a four-door sedan/saloon, and a five-door station wagon (1999-2005). All Kia Rio vehicles include a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. The first-generation Rio was sold as a four-door sedan and five-door station wagon beginning in 1999 in South Korea. The station wagon model was marketed as the “Rio Cinco” in the United States, “Rio RX-V” in Canada, and the “Rio Look” in Chile. In South Korea, the “Pride” name was used from the second generation onwards.

The second-generation Rio was released in the early 2005 model year in Europe and for the 2006 model year in North America. This generation includes five-door hatchback and four-door sedan body styles with increased interior volume. Starting in 2011 with the third generation, the Rio was split into two different models, one as the global model (body code: UB) and the other a specific model for Russia and China (body code: QB). A fourth generation was released in 2016 for the 2017 model year. The fourth-generation Rio was not offered in South Korea and was replaced by the Rio-based Stonic crossover.

Kia automobiles can be identified by the Kia emblem, which includes the name “Kia” in capital letters (and stylized so the ‘A’ does not include a horizontal line) inside of an oval.
