Background and Identification

The Nissan Xterra is a truck-based compact SUV (sport utility vehicle) produced by Nissan Motors from 1999 to 2015 across two generations. The Xterra is a front-engine, two-wheel or four-wheel drive, five-door, five-passenger vehicle. The Xterra is called the Nissan Paladin or the Dongfeng Oting in China and the Nissan Roniz in Iran. Nissan Xterras were marketed as affordable and rugged vehicles with body-on-frame construction and underbody skid plates.

The first-generation Nissan Xterra (1999-2004) shared a front bumper, hood, A-pillar, windshield, and front doors with the Nissan Frontier line. The second-generation Xterra also shared its platform with the Frontier line. Both Xterra generations used a two-box design with an asymmetrical rear window, prominent two-tiered roof, and c-pillar-mounted rear door handles.

Nissan licensed the Xterra name from its XTERRA off-road triathlon racing series vehicles. The Xterra was Nissan’s first vehicle completely designed, developed, and manufactured in the United States. After the 2015 model year, Xterra was discontinued in the United States because of declining sales, poor fuel economy, and mandated upgrades to emissions and safety.

Nissan Xterra vehicles include the Nissan emblem, which depicts the name “Nissan” in capital letters on a banner inside of a circle. Xterra automobiles also include an Xterra emblem, which includes the name “Xterra” in capital letters, usually with the “terra” portion cut out of a piece of metal or plastic, and the “X” portion as a lone letter.
