Introduction
While a clarinet is used in this guide, this technique could be used on other woodwind instruments. A pad on a clarinet needs to be replaced if it falls off or becomes damaged. In this case, the protective film on the pad has fallen off.
Tools
-
-
Disassemble the clarinet until you are handling only the joint containing the missing or damaged pad.
-
If the pad is missing completely, skip to step 3.
-
-
-
Remove the damaged pad by inserting the screwdriver under the pad and peeling it off the key.
-
-
-
Squeeze a dot of super glue into the empty key.
-
Take care to not overfill the key or glue will ooze out and potentially bind the key to the instrument.
-
-
-
Using the screwdriver, press the pad down to secure it to the key
-
Hold the pad for 5 seconds to let the glue harden
-
-
-
Place a small piece of paper between the key and the instrument to avoid residual glue binding the key to the instrument
-
Let the instrument sit out for a few minutes to let the glue fully dry
