Introduction

This guide will show you how to program the RXPW4 controller. RXPW4 installation and operating instructions.

  1. iZQHOxhNFN5dVvJW
    • Here you can see the dimplex controller. It has a number of buttons. This guide will teach you how to program it.

  2. cePE3EOhbEKjUrss
    • Turn the dial from auto to prog,

    • Stop at the dot shown by the red arrow.

  3. dCTL5rhWhDUquM3i
    • Select the zone by pressing the plus or minus arrow

    • Then press ok. In this example we will do zone 1.

    • This will only work if the time is correctly set

  4. gfplMinZmibauyRY
    • The screen will change to the picture

    • The day will show as the yellow arrow shows. Dimplex set Sunday is 1 and Saturday is 7.

    • The bottom part of the screens shows a square - one hour is one square and runs from 00 - 23.

    • Press the plus and minus buttons depending if your want the heating / tank on or off. For example if you wanted it off you would press the minus button. If you got to a time you wanted it on you would press the up arrow. In the picture you will see squares above, this means the heat / tank will come on that time.

    • Press ok when you are happy and repeat for each day. When you have finished you will be back to the zone selection screen.

  5. hamLpYDt6TbI4hAA
    • Turn the dial back to auto. The program will run.

  6. This video shows you how to override a zone. Some properties don't make use of all the zones. Certainly ones that were built earlier. It is possible to change it however beyond the scope of this guide.
    • This video shows you how to override a zone. Some properties don't make use of all the zones. Certainly ones that were built earlier. It is possible to change it however beyond the scope of this guide.

    • To work out which zones are which simply override a zone and go and see if the radiator or tank is on. You will hear the tank click when it comes on. You may need a friend to help with that bit.

    • If you find you can't get one of your heaters to control it could be because the switch is off. By each heater you will find a wall switch. One shuts the heater off completely and one allows it to be controlled by the controller. If this still does not work its likely the zone is not used.

Hi there, what setting does the knob on the actual radiator need to be set at to make the heat come on at the desired time? Does it need to be on the clock icon?

Everything's set up according to the awesome instructions and yet when the time comes and the heaters should be working...nothing happens. However, they turn themselves on at a different time than specified. I don't know where I went wrong. Any suggestions?

Tenebre Lidedo -

Hi, In that case I suspect the time is wrong. If you turn the dial to the symbol that looks like a clock it will let you set the time. From there it should work. I will try add this to the instructions too soon.

Tom -

Hi Tom, thank you so much for replying! That's not it - the time seems to be set correctly - the radiators should turn themselves on at 8pm and be on till 6am. While they sometimes do start getting warm at 8pm, they don't seem to be working at 5am. I honestly don't know what the issue is.

Tenebre Lidedo -

Hi, No problem. In that case it could be the temperature. If you look on the heater it has a slider bar. If you put it further up the bar you may find it stays on longer. If that is the case the heaters think it's warm enough not to come on. If that's not it either could you reply with a link to a photo of a example timing?

Tom -

Hello, I am also having problems...I have two switches on the wall next to each heater. One with the cable running in to each heater and the other one is just a fused switch. Should both be switched on if using the wall timer or only one of them? If so, which one please?

Gemma -

Hi Gemma, it really depends on the property. Some of mine are the wrong way round. Basically one should cut the power to the heater and the other will allow the zone to work. If you set the controller to night mode (the moon) it will turn all the heaters off. If you then look at the wall switch and find the heate is giving out heat then the switch is the wrong way. You can elimanate the issue that way. When you turn the controller to all on (the sun) the heater will work. This will hlep you work out if the switch is the right way.

Hoep this makes sense.

Hi Tom

I have done each step however my heaters are coming on and the wrong times. The clock time is correct.

Also on the heaters what icon do I turn all the heaters on to in order for the timer to come on? I set the timer to auto and the heater dial to clock?

thanks

Sam

Samira Khan -

Hi,

Usually near the heater you will see a panel with two switches one labelled heater and one labelled with nothing. These switches supply power to the heater and also tell the heater if it should listen to the controller. The makes it more flexible. Simplest way to see if the controller is being listened to is to turn all the heaters up to max (the slider on the heater). Set the controller to the moon (night time). This will tell the controller to turn all the heaters off. Go round each heater and press the unlabelled switch. If the heater light (the one with the three lines goes out) you will know it’s now on the controller. If you press and it comes on you will know it was correct first time and can be clicked back. Sometimes they are labelled wrong in our place. If you find both lights go out you cut the power to the heater. Simply try the other switch. When your done, turn the dial back to auto and the programme should run. Hope this makes sense.

Cheers,

Tom.

Hi Tom,

I have a two zone programmer which is not showing a display, my electrician says that there is power to the unit. Does this mean I have to replace the programmer? If so I cannot find a two zone one , will a four zone one work?

Thanks Julie

Julie Sams -

Hi Julie,

Yes a 4 zone would work. You would simply have two zones that would do nothing.

That said if you had some heaters sharing a zone currently you could split them across the unused zones to make the system more flexible for your needs. It sounds like the screen has gone if it’s on auto and nothing is showing.

Best wishes,

Tom.

Tom -

Hello TOM we have heating but no hot water there is power going to box but none going to emersion many thanks Ian

Ian Phipps -

Hi Ian,

Usually the immersion is controlled by another box near the tank with dimplex written on it (rxpwif is the most common model). This tells the tank to come on the controllers orders. In my system there are two heater elements. The dimplex does one (3kw limit) and the second is for a top up manual boost or if the dimplex fails. If you don’t have power to the immersion it sounds like the dimplex box on the wall by the tank has gone wrong or been turned off by mistake or the immersion has failed.

Cheers,

tom.

Tom -

Hello Tom thankyou for your advice have changed this an now works fine many thanks again Ian

Ian Phipps -

How can I adjusted the temperature? I have just moved into a property with the type of heating. I have looked through the guide book and online all I can find is how to set the program.

Ryan Cole -

Each heater has a slider on it to adjust the temperature. The timer does not set the temperature. Hope this helps.

Tom -

Hi, I have re-programmed my heating system thanks to the excellent instructions above but for some reason the downstairs bathroom heater is not working.  The switches are on, the lights are coming on the top of the heater but no heat!  Would you have any idea what might be wrong?  Many thanks.

Lianne -

Hi Tom,

All my radiators are programmed to zone 2. How do I go about splitting radiators from different rooms into different zones?

David

DAVID -

Hi David,

You can swap them into any of the four zones. If you look at the instructions under the install part you can thread them in the zone you want. You can link more than one heater into the zone. For example two living room heaters.

Thanks,

Tom.

Tom -

Hello Tom, great guide but of course still some trouble here. I've got more heaters than zones and not sure which ones are connected to the system and what zones. Also I am not sure which way to flip the switch to allow programmed schedule to kick in. My question is, does it matter if the actual red light is on? Would a heater still switch on when both switches on the wall are on but the actual power button on the panel on the actual heater is not lighting up?

Does it make sense what I am trying to do?

Artur -

Hi Artuer,

It would matter on the assumption your system is the same as mine. One powers the radiator and the other switch tells the radiator weather to do what the controller tells it to. If you put all your radiators on to full and set the controller to night (moon). They should all go off. If they don’t then try flip the switch and you will see one light stays on and one goes off. Its now doing what the controllers say correctly. You can then programme it as normal. Its a trial and error to be honest. Some of mine are the wrong way round so it took some time to work it out.

Hi,

Can somebody please help me with reprogramming my zones. All my heaters are running off one zone and I want to split them up. I’ve looked through the operational guide and can’t find anything. Can somebody please help?! Thanks

DAVID -

Hi David,

I have attached the full guide for the controller including installation. You can split the zones but you need to move the cables in the terminals physically. See page 2.

Tom -

Hi, guys,

Really helpfull, thank you. But one of my heaters has its lights blinking….. what does it mean?

Thank you

F gouveia -

Is it a programmer with wall thermostat included?

jenniferwhite68 -

Hi Tom,

I just moved into a flat with this system. Problem is when I set the program and put it into auto, the heaters would still turn on when the program was set for them to be off. I did your test to see if my switches were the wrong way around but they had no effect. Does this mean the flat hasn't been wired up properly to respond to the controller? It seems weird they'd go to the effort of installing all of the switches and controller but not connect the cables in the terminals

AJK -

Hi,

Have you tried all the zones? Depending on the model you either have two or four zones. Sometimes fitters don’t connect all the zones. For example in my flat I split them up to give more flexibility. The other thing to check if the temperature is up to max to make sure it will come on. Assuming it’s not tropical temperatures where you are!

Cheers,

Tom

Tom -

My control box is not displaying anything

Karen -

Is this programming for only suppling heat for the radiators or supply hot water as well? I want to know the best using method when it’s summer time. In summer you want hot water but not heat the house obviously. Thanks.

Ibrahim -

Hi,

This can manage a hot water tank too. If you connect it to a zone using Dimplex’s Universal Pilot Wire Interface unit (model RXPWIF). My flat works in this way.

Hope this helps,

Tom

Tom -

Hi. I’ve got one of these running Dimplex duoheat storage heaters and a hot water tank. When I turn it to Auto or the moon symbol the screen goes blank. I can’t get the heaters to run on storage but the front instant panel works fine. Any advice would be very kind, thank you

Roy -

Hi, sometimes this can be a fault with the controller. Just to check if you turn to sun do all the heaters turn on and produce heat? In other words do the heaters listen to the controller?

Tom -

Hello, could you please upload your instructions how to set the time correctly. I’ve managed to set the zones but can’t figure how to set the time correctly. The zone instructions were very very helpful thank you

edgill15 -

Anyone know what to do if the controller seems to have lost power and isnt diplaying anything?

pinkladie_87 -

Hi Tom, I programed all 4 zones to OFF for all 7 days of the week. The clock and day of week are set ( day 2 being Monday). Reset dial to Auto and all 4 rads are switched on and the slider set at 10. Theoretically all rads should be off and cold…when in fact they are all on! The override shows 1 bar and not 4 bars. Any light you could throw on this would be most appreciated. Thanks

milescantelou -

My programmer display does not show anything but the power supply is working? Could you help me resolve this issue?

Hannah Peden -

My controller is flashing 00:00 all the time. When I rotate the dial to program either the display goes off or it flashes 00:00 very faintly. I’ve tried turning off for 15 minutes and then back on. It displayed 00:16 for a while until I rotated the dial and then it started flashing 00:00 again - any ideas ?

thanks in anticipation

Steve Barge -

Hi Steve,

It sounds like the time may not be set. Have you tried setting the time by turning it to the clock?

Cheers,

Tom.

Tom -

Hello. I have set up my programmes but when I then click on auto for it to run the screen goes blank. What am I doing wrong?

Laura Robinson -

Hi, moved into new flat with this system and don’t think the zones are programmed other than zone 1. I’ve noticed that when I programmed times the heating just didn’t come/go off at them times? I’ve put it on the moon for now using the dial to heat up the room when needed. I obviously would prefer the heating to go off and come on when I want, how do I do this? I did the test on the moon and the lights don’t go off but I can turn it off from the controller so it must be connected somehow but seems any other setting doesn’t seem to affect it? Is there an issue with my controller do you think?

kelsiehatton -

Hi I have the PW4 for dimplex panel heaters - I have them set up auto to come on when I get home. They are on at the wall and the switch is on at the heaters - however past the set time I can still turn the heat on by using the temperature switch - surely this isn’t right as the set time has passed

Sarah -

I have now turned it off completely and will operate from the heaters not ideal but i think I’ll have to upgrade to a better timer

Sarah -

Have read all the comments as I having problems with the dimplex heating system.

What are the temperature sliders ?

My issue is that I can use programmer to switch heating on and off…..but I can’t get the auto timer to switch the radiators off

Martin Platt -

Hi Tom. Someone (could've been me) messed with the dials and now I have no hot water...? How can I set it to have hot water again please? (Not sure what I did, but only get flashing '0's or Prhr or some other weird letters. Can't find an on-line manual, looks like you're the only one who knows!

Leslie -

Hi,

Try setting it to the sun dial. This is always on. If that does not work try switching it off and on and if that does not work press ok a couple of times with all the heaters powered on. It sounds like it might be in test mode

Best wishes,

Tom.

Tom -

Hi Tom,

In the configuration - Heater modes, can you please explore on C1=1 COMFORT/BACKGROUND; C1=2 on and off; c1=3 Comfort and frost protection. I have a problem with my heater as regardless if the program is off, it still keeps on heating the water, unfortunately, it has no use during summer. Looking forward for your reply.

Regards,

John.

jp yra -

Hi John,

If you have a dimplex pilot wire controller for the tank, either its not working correcly or often (hopefully) its not on. The controller needs to be on for the hot water tank to respect the programe you have set. Unfortunately dimplex did not put a light on the pilot wire controller but if its on you can hear the tank click on and off when you tell the controller to put the water heater on manually.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi,

I am having problems with this. My program is set so that all zones should have hot water from 6-10am. But by midday the water is cold. I then tried having it on the sun icon meaning all zones are always on and again- lukewarm water. How can I fix this?

Alysha Keers -

how do i set the day of the week please

Stellamaris Alokha -

You have to scroll through the times and the numbers will scroll through the days. Just keep your finger down on the +! Until you find your day. 1 Sunday and 7 is Saturday.

Michael -

Hi

I have followed the instructions and set the timer. The question I have is that my radiators. I have the dimplex radiators with a slider control. They are all turned on at the way, but do I turn them on at the top of the radiator or are they supposed to come on when the timer kicks in please?

I have set all 4 zones to the same time of day 6-8am and 6-9.30pm.

Michael -

The top of the radiator needs to be on. So the power light is on. If the dimplex timer is talking correctly the second light (heat symbol) should be off when the timer is not calling for heat. If the timer is on the heater has reached the temperature it will turn off. Its best to test this when the room is a little cooler. To save waiting for the timer you can simply turn the dial to the sun to tell it to turn the heater on manually. Once tested and all works, turn the dial back to auto.

Tom -

Hi Tom, thank you for clarifying that. I put it on comfort and 2 radiators came on but the others didn't unless I turned them right up to full. So I think it called to 2 radiators but not the 4.

Michael -

Hi Tom. I just moved to a new flat. We just turned on all heaters (by wall switch) and put the x2dpw4 thermostat to the little sun (continue heating) however the heaters seems have their own personality sometimes they heat well. Sometimes not at all. Any idea how to make sure they keep heating and not turning down?

Barabás Balog -

hello. My display is not showing anything at all.

When i turn the dial on to auto sometimes i can see a faint display and i need to quickly press okay and the + 4 times to turn the z1 z2 z3 z4 to high and that turns on my radiators and brightens the display. As soon as i turn them off it fades back to nothing. My radiators don’t heat up unless i turn them on on the controller.
