Retroarch ist ein umfangreiches Frontend für viele bekannte Emulatoren. Die Besonderheit ist, das die Emulatoren, bei Retroarch "Cores" genannt, direkt von Retroarch geladen werden und mit diesem kommunizieren. Deswegen sind nur speziell für Retroarch kompilierte Emulatoren geeignet. Einer der vielen Vorteile ist, das z.B. ein Gamepad nur einmal eingerichtet werden muss und dann mit allen Emulatoren funktioniert. Retroarch ist nicht in den offiziellen Paketquellen enthalten. Der Entwickler bietet ein "Personal Package Archiv" (PPA) [1] an.

Zusätzliche Fremdquellen können das System gefährden.
Ein PPA unterstützt nicht zwangsläufig alle Ubuntu-Versionen. Weitere Informationen sind der PPA-Beschreibung des Eigentümers/Teams libretro zu entnehmen.
Damit Pakete aus dem PPA genutzt werden können, müssen die Paketquellen neu eingelesen werden.
Nach dem Aktualisieren der Paketquellen kann folgendes Paket installiert [2] werden:
retroarch (ppa)

Paketliste zum Kopieren:

Außerdem müssen die gewünschten Cores einzeln installiert werden. Die Paketnamen beginnen mit libretro-... und sind selbsterklärend.
Die Konfiguration ist im Vergleich zu anderen Emulatoren aufwendig. Hier ein mit Kommentaren versehenes Beispiel [3].

Wie in den Kommentaren zu lesen, sollten vor Ubuntu 13.10 in einem separaten Verzeichnis Symlinks zu den installierten Cores erstellt werden [4]:

Für die Einrichtung von Pads und Joysticks hat Retroarch ein eigenes, kleines Werkzeug [4].

Optimal sind Pads mit dem Aufbau der modernen Playstation-Controller: 1 digitales Steuerkreuz, 2 Analogsticks mit integrierten Tasten, 4 Schultertasten, 4 normale Tasten plus "Select" und "Start". All diese Tasten werden abgefragt. Wenn man jetzt beispielsweise für eine Emulation eines N64 auch ein N64-Pad / einen Nachbau hat, fehlen Tasten. Hier können Tasten doppelt belegt und die unsinnigen Einträge aus der Konfiguration gelöscht werden.

Der Hauptbildschirm ist optisch einfach gestrickt und auch recht simpel zu bedienen. Um ein Spiel zu spielen, reicht es:
sich unter "Core" einen Core auszusuchen
und dann unter "Load Game" das gewünschte Spiel auszusuchen
Falls ein Spiel nicht funktionieren sollte, hat man meist mehrere Cores zur Auswahl. Ein extremes Beispiel ist der Super Nintendo mit 5 verschiedenen Cores. Als Hilfestellung sei erwähnt, dass Bsnes der beste Emulator für den SNES ist - aber auch laut Hersteller einen 2 GHz-Prozessor benötigt, mehrere Prozessorkerne werden nicht genutzt. Alleine Bsnes bringt 3 Cores mit, die unterschiedliche Profile benutzen. Diese sind "performance" (schnell, aber ungenaue Emulation), "balanced" (deutlich langsamer aber genauer, empfohlen) und "accuracy" (anspruchsvolle und genaue Emulation für Härtefälle). Wer einen zu langsamen Prozessor hat, weicht auf die Cores von Mednafen oder Snes9xNext aus.
Im Gegensatz zum normalen, sprich Standalone-Bsnes (mittlerweile in Higan umbenannt), müssen ROMs nicht mit einem Tool wie purify
bearbeitet werden.
Um ein Spiel aus einem Terminal zu starten, müssen als Argumente der Core und das ROM übergeben werden. Ein Beispiel für das Starten aus einem Terminal heraus:
retroarch -L /usr/lib/libretro/bsnes_balanced_libretro.so ~/Roms/SNES/SuperNintendoRom.smc
Es gibt auch eine automatische Erkennung, welcher Core genutzt werden kann, diese ist aber noch sehr experimentell. Bei dieser wird nicht der Core selbst angegeben, sondern der Ordner, in dem die Cores liegen.
retroarch -L /usr/lib/libretro/ ~/Roms/SNES/SuperNintendoRom.smc
In diesem Beispiel wird der erste Core verwendet, der Dateien mit der Endung .smc verarbeiten kann, egal ob es der beste oder schlechteste Core ist.
Nach diesem Vorbild können natürlich auch Programmstarter für ein bestimmtes Spiel angelegt werden. Diese Befehle sind ebenfalls geeignet, um mit XBMC und dem Addon RomCollectionBrowser die eigene Sammlung schick darzustellen und bequem zu starten.
