Die 2. Handball-Bundesliga startete wie in den Jahren zuvor auch in der Saison 2002/03 mit einer Nord- und einer Südstaffel. Aus der Staffel Nord stieg der Stralsunder HV, aus der Staffel Süd die SG Kronau/Östringen in die 1. Handball-Bundesliga auf.
