City upon a Hill

City upon a hill (deutsch wörtlich „Stadt auf einem Hügel“) ist eine Trope, welche aus John Winthrops Predigt A Model of Christian Charity von 1630 stammt. Die Aussage bezieht sich auf die Metapher von Salz und Licht aus der Bergpredigt Jesu aus dem Matthäusevangelium (Mt 5,14 ): „Ihr seid das Licht der Welt. Eine Stadt, die auf einem Berg liegt, kann nicht verborgen bleiben“ (in der King-James-Bibel: Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.)

Winthrop schärfte den puritanischen Kolonisten der Massachusetts Bay Colony ein, dass ihre neue Kolonie eine „Stadt auf einem Hügel“ sei, die von der ganzen Welt beobachtet werde:

“for wee must Consider that wee shall be as a City upon a Hill, the eies of all people are uppon us”

„Wir müssen davon ausgehen, dass wir wie eine Stadt auf einem Hügel sein sollen. Die Blicke aller Menschen richten sich auf uns.“
