Im Kanawha-Tal im nordwestlichen Virginia trafen 1861 im Zuge der Operationen im westlichen Virginia Streitkräfte der Nord- und Südstaaten zweimal aufeinander; im Gefecht bei Kesslers Cross Lanes am 26. August und bei der Schlacht bei Carnifex Ferry am 10. September.
