Eine Katastrophe (altgriechisch καταστροφή katastrophé „Umwendung“, aus κατά katá „herab-“, „nieder-“ und στρέφειν stréphein „wenden“) ist ein folgenschweres Unglücks ereignis. Oft wird der veraltende Begriff Verheerung als synonym angesehen.
