Es ist das kulturelle und wirtschaftliche Zentrum der nordostchinesischen Mandschurei. Im europäischen Schrifttum ist die Stadt auch noch unter dem ursprünglichen Namen Mukden (mandschurisch: ᠮᡠᡩᡝᠨ) als Hauptstadt der Mandschurei bekannt. Frühere Namen der Stadt waren Shengjing (盛京) und Fengtian (奉天).
