Der Begriff sozialer Tatbestand wurde vom Soziologen Émile Durkheim geprägt (fait social). Von René König wurde der Ausdruck fait social mit soziologischer Tatbestand übersetzt. Soziale Tatbestände/Tatsachen sind Gegenstand der empirischen Sozialforschung.
